Possibilities Quilt Blocks x 12 (3 x Blocks per class)!

Please email hello@craftymonkies.com if you would like to Pay in 3 x instalments of £33 ($42)

We're really excited to be hosting this four-part Quilt Block of the Month series of workshops with top US-based longarm quilter, Charisma Horton! The 4 x three-hour classes are spread out between April-October 2022 (homework between classes will be required!) and you will focus on 3 x quilt blocks during EACH workshop (12 blocks in all!), the aim being to create a whole quilt by the time you complete the course. If you missed our first class in April, it doesn't matter, once you have booked your £100 ticket each class you will be sent the recording from the first live class so you can catch up, and each future class is recorded, so if you cant attend live you will automatically be sent the recording a few days after each live class, so you won't ever miss a thing!

The one-off price of £100.00 represents fantastic value for money for this four-part series (12 hours in total) as our regular individual workshop price is normally £30.00! - AND you get the $35 pattern included within your £100.00 fee too! Here's Charisma to tell you more:-

Introduction by Charisma:-

Hi, I'm Charisma Horton and I'm absolutely delighted to have been asked to join the CraftyMonkies talent pool of craft experts/tutors! I have been a professional longarm quilter for 12 years now, having first taken the leap into pattern design in December 2018. Since then I have been picked up in almost a hundred crafting/quilting publications, I have published no fewer than 300 of my own designs and I'm a regular contributor to major fabric companies! I created this Quilt Block of the Month, called Possibilities, so I could share my love of using traditional blocks in a different way, using new designs and lots of colour. This is a 96" x 96" (inch) quilt with a variety of blocks and fabrics and I'm absolutely convinced you're going to have so much fun making it with me - I look forward to welcoming you along 'in-class' with Rachel and myself: see you for the first date on 22nd April 2022!...

What you will learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

During this Block of the Month (BOM) Series you will be with Charisma for 4 x three-hour sessions and you will learn 3 x blocks in each of the four sessions! There is a variety of techniques in this quilt from regular patchwork, templates and Paper Piecing (or Foundation Paper Piecing: FPP). Charisma will also share her different quilting designs if that is of interest to any of you!

Skill level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Charisma tells us that the skill level for the Possibilities series of workshops is Advanced Beginner. Please don't be daunted as Charisma will be there to walk you through each block and you will have plenty of time to master the technique. But - a little word of warning here! - you will have homework to do between each session of this series - after all, you can't make a stunning quilt in just 12 hours of class time and we're great believers in " you only get out what you put in"!...

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You will need your basic sewing supplies, your pattern (created by Charisma and included when you book & pay to attend this series of workshops) and your fabric.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

All of the fabric requirements are listed on the pattern that you will get following your registration. There is also a colour key included in the pattern. Feel free to change any colours, use prints, scraps, etc. The idea here is to really make this your own quilt project! Charisma used solids for her prototype and she can make kits available for purchase in her online shop. Please note that US shipping rates will apply.

Easy-Art Class 1 of 3:

Boats In The Harbour!

Gary Mills is kick starting a whole year of Art & Design lessons aimed at everyone in September (you don't have to join for the year, the option is yours if you wish to dip in and out of monthly classes!) We're so excited about the upcoming schedule, so many amazing things to learn! To get things started in this series, Gary will be teaching Boats in the Harbour in September - here's 'Da Main Man' to tell you all about it!...

Introduction by Gary:-

Have you always wanted to learn more about being creative? Have you wanted to explore design, but never had the opportunity? Well, this is just one of the lessons specifically designed for you by Gary Mills, where he has created a series of individual lessons that specifically are designed to be accessed by everyone and at all levels and abilities; This is for all of you who would like to learn and have a go, and those who enjoy being creative but would like to become a little freer and more open to some new ideas. If you love, colour, doodling and playing with scraps of paper, cloth, and ephemera then you are really going to enjoy your time on any of Gary’s Art and Design short lessons.

This lesson is based around creating an illustrated graphic picture of bright bold stylised boats in a harbour. This scene is totally achievable using a water colour paint palette, paint application techniques, a collage template to follow, and a series of processes to help you achieve a piece of Artwork you will be proud of. This will not be a conventional art drawing lesson, far from it; but rather a fun and informative approach to creating Art.

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this short 1 ½ hour lesson you will cover water colour paint techniques, illustration, collage, following a template, with cutting and gluing.

The outcome to this project is finished picture 6 ½ “ x 8 ½ “

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Gary has many years of experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of art and textiles; his lessons are so enjoyable, fun, and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance. This lesson is suitable for all; if you are a beginner this is a great way to find your creative ability through learning process and skills which explore the rudiments of creative art and design practices. For those with some confidence and experience you could add further diversify to approaches in your own artistic ability and imagination.

Online Interactive Workshop

Curled Feather Quilting!

Karen’s first-ever class with us (way back in January 2022 - the excellent free-motion Curled Feather Quilting online workshop) - was a raging success. It sold out and there were at least 10 people on the waiting list! So we're absolutely thrilled to welcome back the wonderfully talented & delightful Karen Miller of Redbird Quilt Co fame into the CraftyMonkies fold once again! She is repeating the same class for those who missed out, or indeed want to brush up on their skills again! But do keep an eye on our social media feeds as Karen will be offering a NEW additional class with us in November 2022 - more details to follow very soon!…

Introduction by Karen:-

Are you comfortable with meandering or looping around your quilt top, but find yourself intimidated when it comes to stitching out more advanced quilting motifs? When I began free-motion quilting with my home sewing-machine, my goal was to have my completed quilts appear as though they had been finished by a longarm quilter. In my mind that meant I MUST LEARN to quilt feathers!! My first full feather quilt was both a challenge and a joy as I used 3 borders to practice my feathers and grow my skills. Once comfortable with stitching feathers along a wavy spine I was ready to add more interest to my feathers – Voila! – the curled feather! I’m excited to share the process with you – it’s straight forward and simple – believe me when I say: "We can do this together!"...

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this 3 hour workshop we’ll learn the skills necessary to stitch a free motion curled feather. We’ll begin by reviewing a few basics of home machine quilting and quickly dive into the fun of feathers. We’ll learn feather structure and I’ll share a few simple guidelines for positioning feather plumes along a spine. Before you know it we’ll be applying all we’ve learned to stitching a delightful curled feather. To wrap it up we’ll review a variety of ways to apply the curled feather to your quilt tops.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is applicable to a beginner that is comfortable with dropping the feed dogs and stitching out simple designs. We’ll have you stitching a curled feather in no time!! I encourage you to learn and practice your curled feathers on large fabric scraps - the learning process is less stressful this way.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Paper & Pencil - To practice drawing feathers before we stitch them

  • Air or Water Soluble Fabric Marking Pen - Since we’re working on practice pieces a #2 lead pencil will work too.

  • New Machine Needle - My favourite is the Superior Titanium Coated Topstitch Needle size 90/14

  • Thread - Any general purpose weight like 40wt or 50wt in a color that will complement your fabric. Use the finest thread weight to wind a bobbin.. My favourite thread is Aurifil 100% cotton. I’ll be stitching with the heavier 28wt Aurifil - It shows nicely via ZOOM – I’ll have 50wt in the bobbin!

  • Quilting Gloves (optional) - My favorite are Machingers Gloves by Quilters Touch. I purchase them in size X-Small so there is no excess in my fingertips.

  • Teflon Slider for machine bed (optional) - My favorite is the Supreme Slider by LaPierre. This gadget helps your fabric slide across your machine bed with ease.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Light coloured solid fabrics 15 – 20” square. Muslin will work fine. I generally use a print fabric on the back of my quilts but for this workshop you can use the same fabric on top and back.

  • Batting of your choice – my favorite is 100% wool batting. Cotton or cotton blend is fine too. I would avoid using a 100% poly batting during the workshop.

  • Prepare 2 quilt sandwiches roughly 15” to 20” square.

  • Baste using the method of your choice - I prefer to pin baste!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing-Machine with darning, embroidery or free-motion quilting foot. If you have an extension table or cabinet for your machine now is a perfect time to use it!!

  • Ensure you clean & service your machine prior to the workshop – be sure to remove all the dust bunnies in and under the bobbin area. Oil if applicable.

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

A Curled Feather template with instructions AND a free-motion quilting basics handout are provided as a PDF download with purchase of this workshop. Please print off beforehand and have available during the workshop!

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The Gojiberi Dress!

We are so excited to welcome a brand new tutor into the CraftyMonkies family - Geri Berman, better know to her legion of followers as Geri In Stitches! What a talent Geri is, not only a brilliant dressmaker, but a great teacher with a passion to share her skills learned over many many years. Geri is such fun and this class is going to be amazing! She has come up with a great idea, The Gojiberi Dress, a class where you can choose what you want to make: either a blouse OR a dress and all based on a core tee-shirt design! Read on for more information, we think this class will be hugely popular!

Introduction by Geri:-

Let’s draft and sew The Gojiberi Dess in this CraftyMonkies online course! The Gojiberi Dress features a V-neckline, dolman sleeves, and a gathered skirt that begins at the bust or under-bust line. Its roomy and oversized fit makes it the perfect dress for warm weather. The dress is made without any closures, and is worn by pulling it over the head, which makes it easy to sew and easy to wear.

We will draft the pattern pieces with the help of a basic T-shirt that fits you with comfortable ease. Then we will go over the sewing order and sewing techniques required to sew up the dress. There will also be options presented to modify the dress to your liking. For example, a shorter gathered tier converts the dress into a blouse. Adding more gathered tiers will create a longer dress with more volume and movement. The sleeves can also be modified by adding ruffles, instead of finishing the sleeve hems with bias binding.

The Gojiberi Dress is very versatile and can be dressed up or down, depending on the fabrics used and the different style modifications that can be applied to it. The size of the dress will be customised according to your body measurements with the help of a T-shirt that fits you. Using this method, the dresses can be drafted for a range of sizes!

So let's get crafty, unleash your creativity, and sew up a Gojiberi Dress!

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop, you will learn a way of drafting your own handmade clothes with the help of a basic T-shirt as a pattern block. We will touch on simple drafting skills for an empire line bodice, and how to draft a gathered skirt and sleeve ruffles based on the measurements of the bodice. The sewing techniques covered will include sewing front bodice pieces to the back bodice, finishing the neckline and sleeves with bias binding, and creating gathers for the skirt and sleeve ruffles.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is geared towards a beginner or intermediate quilter/sewist. Makers will need to have the basic knowledge of using drafting-rulers and cutting with fabric shears, using a sewing machine and sewing a straight seam.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Woven fabric (refer to the section below for details)

  • The main drafting tool is a basic round or V-neck T-shirt that fits you with comfortable ease. Please avoid using a tight-fitting T-shirt

  • Drafting and sewing tools include: measuring tape, matching sewing thread, pins, plastic drafting ruler (2” or 5cm wide), French curve (optional), fabric shears, sewing machine, serger (optional)

  • An erasable marker like a Pilot Frixion pen to mark the pattern directly onto the fabric. If this is not available, dressmaker’s chalk or pencil can be used.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Fabric Choice: I highly recommend using a light to medium weight woven fabric. Since we are going to draft the dress directly onto the fabric, it is best to choose a stable fabric that does not shift and move while handling it. Fabrics suitable for this include cotton or linen, which are easier to cut and sew with. Avoid fabrics that have too much drape and fluidity, like some silks and viscose/rayon for your first version of the dress. I also suggest that you consider your first make of the dress as a wearable toile, so use fabric that is inexpensive, thrifted, or leftover from a previous project. Once you figure out the dimensions of the dress that fit your preferences, then you can move on to cutting out more precious fabric for future versions. In addition, I would choose a plain fabric to work with for the practical purpose of seeing the drafting lines clearly on it. For your first go at it, avoid printed or patterned fabric which would require pattern-matching.

For a Gojiberi Blouse with a hem that ends at the hip, an estimated 2 - 2.5 metres of fabric will be sufficient.

For a knee-length Gojiberi Dress with one gathered skirt tier, an estimated 2.5 - 3.5 metres of fabric is required.

If adding more length to the dress, or adding more gathered tiers, then factor in additional fabric.

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing Machine

  • Serger (optional)

  • Drafting Tools: erasable marker or pen or dressmaker’s chalk or pencil, measuring tape, 2” or 5 cm wide plastic ruler, French curve (optional)

  • Sewing Tools: matching sewing thread, pins, fabric shears

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

There are 4 main pattern pieces that we will be drafting for this workshop:-

  • Back Bodice

  • Front Bodice

  • Gathered Skirt or Blouse Tier

  • Bias Binding

Additional pattern pieces for the optional sleeve ruffle or additional gathered tier:

  • Sleeve Ruffle

  • Additional Gathered Tier

The bias binding can be cut beforehand from the self fabric to save yourself some time. If you already know how to do so, please cut strips of fabric on the bias 1 ⅝” or 4 cm wide. We will need about an estimated 1.5 m of bias binding to finish up the neckline and the sleeve hems.

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

We will be taking some basic body measurements in the class to make sure the bodice fits, and the most important measurement is the bust measurement. Make sure that you are wearing a bra (if you are going to be wearing a bra with the dress) during the workshop when taking measurements, and wear a top that is more streamlined to the body.

To give you an idea of fabric choices, requirements, and sizing, here are some details of the sizes of the models and the fabric used for your reference.

Liyan is an 11 year old girl with a bust measurement of 28 inches (71 cm), and stands at 1.5m tall. Her T-shirt size is XS, and the fabric used is leftover Liberty London Cotton Lawn, and (1-1.5 m of 140cm wide fabric) was used to make her blouse.

Geri has a bust measurement of 33 inches (84 cm), and is 1.6m tall. Her T-shirt size is S/M, and the fabric used for the striped multicoloured dress is a light-weight cotton (2 m of 140cm wide fabric used). The white dress with an additional gathered tier is made from a lightweight, cotton-polyester blend (2.5m of 150cm wide fabric).

Batel has a bust measurement of 39 inches (99cm), and is 1.7m. Her T-shirt size is L/XL, and the fabric used for her ruffled sleeve dress is a lightweight dark blue twill denim (3 m of 150cm wide fabric).

Online Interactive Workshop

Cathedral Windows Block!

The vivacious & hugely talented/versatile Sarah Payne joins us once again, this time running a class which is a repeat of her Cathedral Windows Block workshop (last aired in March 2021) - great for those of you new to CraftyMonkies or who might have missed out last time and a great opportunity for those who had a go last year to hone those quilt-block skills!...

Introduction by Sarah:-

This is a fun class, cutting up and re-using those old denim jeans to make a fabulous cushion with the Cathedral Windows design. So instead of throwing them out, grab a few pairs of jeans and get creating!

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Sarah will show you how to make this stunning design using offcut of denim and make a cute custion. Don’t worry – you can use denim meterage if you don’t have any old jeans to chop!
