Easy-Art Class 2 of 3:

Inspiration Strips!

We're really excited as always to welcome Gary Mills into the CraftyMonkies October schedule. In this, his 2nd in the series of wonderfully unique and crafted  art and design classes, Gary will be teaching Inspiration Strips; here's the talented Mr Mills to tell you all about it!

Introduction by Gary:-

Have you always wanted to learn more about being creative? Have you wanted to explore design, but never had the opportunity? Well, this is just one of the lessons specifically designed for you by Gary Mills, where he has created a series of individual lessons that specifically are designed to be accessed by everyone and at all levels and abilities; This is for all of you who would like to learn and have a go, and those who enjoy being creative but would like to become a little freer and more open to some new ideas. If you love, colour, doodling and playing with scraps of paper, cloth, and ephemera then you are really going to enjoy your time on any of Gary’s Art and Design short lessons.

This lesson is about creating design-based inspiration strips or mini decorative pattern “stories” to inform and inspire both textile design and graphic design.  These could later develop into print, embroidery, or a surface design. Even mounted and framed they also make great visual art you will be proud of.

You will be taking ideas from African tribal costume and decoration (images supplied), then through undertaking a series of processes to extract shapes and patterns to translate into your own ideas and design. This will not be a conventional art & drawing lesson, far from it; but rather a fun and informative approach to creating art & design.

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this short 1 ½ hour lesson you will cover exporting a pattern and shapes from chosen photo images, application of water colour paint techniques, illustration, and collage. The outcome to this project is a series of decorated strips in mixed media approaches 1 ½ “ x 17” mounted

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Gary has many years of experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of art and textiles; his lessons are so enjoyable, fun, and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance. This lesson is suitable for all; if you are a beginner this is a great way to find your creative ability through learning process and skills which explore the rudiments of creative art and design practices. For those with some confidence and experience you could add further diversify to approaches in your own artistic ability and imagination.

Improv Quilting Shoal!

Please Note: This class is now Sold Out; the information below is for all those fortunate enough to have secured their place!

Following on from his hugely successful #improvtrianglesewalong, broadcast via Instagram in early 2020, the marvellous Nicholas Ball teamed up with CraftyMonkies to deliver not just one, but FOUR consecutive dates of his ‘Shoal Sewalong’ class, broadcast on Instagram and here with us in January 2021. The demand was huge and there were many lovely sewists who wanted to attend but just missed out, so finally, without further ado, we’re very happy to announce we will be repeating this Improv Quilting Shoal class! It’s your chance to grab a place if you missed out the first time around, or of course if you would like to re-attend and refresh your memory!

Introduction by Nicholas:-

Since the #improvtrianglesewalong I hosted in early 2020, countless people had asked when the next one would be. The Shoal quilt from my book Inspiring Improv remains one of the most popular projects and I’ve seen some awesome versions, made in all manner of fabrics. When it came to deciding upon the theme for a second Sewalong, it was a no-brainer! And so the #shoalsewalong came along! I was thrilled to offer a special CraftyMonkies workshop alongside the Sewalong and I couldn’t believe it when 4 dates all sold out. I know some of you missed out and were disappointed and have asked me to run it again, so here we are! I do hope you can grab a place this time!

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

During the workshop, you take the fabric you have chosen and learn how to sew the fish units. I will expand upon the instructions given in both my book. I’ll start by showing you the basics of my triangle and freehand curve techniques, before combining them to create unique and varied fish units. As a bonus, I’ll share how to add even more individuality to your fish, with extra fins, gills and patterned bodies. They’ll even be some seaweed!  After making the units, you’ll learn my top tips for joining them together using my jigsaw method. I'lll also be there to answer any questions you may have about quilting and finishing your quilt top.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels. The triangle technique is a great introduction to sewing in a more liberated way and is sure to fuel your creativity The freehand curves will provide the beginner with a firm foundation to cutting without rulers, upon which they can expand the technique. More experienced sewers can challenge themselves with more daring curves and different shaped fish..

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for the workshop, my book, Inspiring Improv (published in 2019 by Lucky Spool, available to buy via Amazon) will expand upon the techniques learnt and provide many more improv tips and tricks. My original Shoal quilt is also one of the 12 projects.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide. For those of you that like to plan ahead, use the following as a guide:-

FOR THE FISH - an assortment of large scraps in your chosen colours. This fabric will be used for the fish bodies and tails, so a healthy assortment of different sized rectangles and squares will work best.

FOR THE BACKGROUND - an assortment of large scraps in your chosen sea/water colours. This can either be one fabric, for a more cohesive look, or a variety for a scrappy version.

Additional scraps from your stash in coordinating colours for gills, fins and seaweed. The more fish you make, the bigger the quilt will be. There is no right or wrong size. Remember, this is your quilt, so make it how you want to

Please don’t stress about these requirements! They are simply a guide and I’ve yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me. As mentioned, they don’t need to be perfectly square, so feel free to use scissors!

This is a technique-based workshop. Feel free to make as many or as few of the fish units as you like. Don’t feel any pressure to cut up all your precious fabric!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A sewing machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

  • Rotary cutter with a new blade (especially important for the curve technique)

  • Cutting mat

  • Patchwork ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric scissors

  • A willingness to explore your own creativity!

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Nicholas is truly excited to be able to offer this workshop again! He says it’s a great way to sew with like-minded people and to inspire one another.

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

Stuffed Appliqué!

As ever, we're really excited to be hosting this workshop - a wholly NEW class! - with the wonderful, engaging & hugely talented Nicholas Ball! This class, Stuffed Appliqué, will see participants embrace their 'inner-improv' creativity and work towards producing some visually stunning & mentally therapeutic results!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

During the early days of the UK’s first Covid-19 Lockdown I wanted a project that was both distracting and challenging. I was inspired to make a temperature quilt by fellow improv quilter Jo Avery, yet wanted mine to be a little different from any quilting technique I’d attempted before. After some initial research I discovered stuffed appliqué and soon, what started out as a daily creative practice to help ease the monotony of the Covid situation, this technique quickly turned into one of my favourite. The resulting quilt, Viral Temperature, is now the cover star of my new book Use & Ornament and I was overjoyed when the quilt received second place in the Appliqué category at the 2022 QuiltCon competition.

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop Nicholas will take you through his step-by-step process of creating stuffed appliqués or traditional trapunto. The technique is an age-old one and the origins of the more familiar faux trapunto used by some quilters today. We will begin by looking briefly at fabrics and what he's found works well. We’ll then move onto the appliqué itself, looking at the various combinations of thread and stitches that can be used. You’ll learn how to prep the shapes ready for stitching, how to get the best results for machine appliqué, plus all Nicholas's extra processes he finds give the best results. Finally, we’ll stuff the shapes, which involves more than shoving some wadding through the back of the fabric!

Nicholas will show you various approaches to take for various shapes, as well as explain the dangers of over-stuffing! During the class, we will first make individual units to practice the technique, using a PDF of starter shapes which Nicholas will provide to all those who sign up for the class. Next, students will be free to continue to make individual units or work on a wholecloth example which he will partially demonstrate and which can be completed after the class using the skills learnt. You’ll also learn a pillowcase facing perfect for finishing irregular shaped quilts and wall hangings!

What's not to love about this class? Be sure not to miss out!...

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Intermediate

The most challenging part of making a stuffed appliqué is the stuffing. The technique is not a difficult one, yet requires some careful handling to ensure that the work looks as good as it possible can. Accurate stitching down of your chosen shape will also ensure the successfulness of the unit, so some shapes will require a little more skill than others.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Small amounts of Bondaweb or similar iron-on fusible fabric web

  • Small amounts of lightweight tear-away stabiliser

  • Good quality fibre fill or toy stuffing

  • Fray check (optional but very useful)

  • Good quality thread - Nicholas likes using heavier weight threads to add definition to the appliqué. He recommends Aurifil 12wt, with either a 50wt or 40wt in the bobbin. Or course, you can also use regular 50wt, which will also be needed for stitching the appliqués closed. For those students interested in using heavier weight threads, Nicholas' Use & Ornament Aurifil collection provides ten small spools - seven 12wt, one 40wt, and two 50wt - and is perfect for this class! The collection is available either online or from your local Aurifil stockist.

Whilst not essential for the workshop, Nicholas' latest book 'Use & Ornament' (scheduled for publication by Lucky Spool in October 2022) will expand upon the techniques learnt and provide further information on both traditional trapunto and his Viral Temperature quilt. The quilt is one of the eight quilt projects featured and the instructions provided will allow you to work on a similar quilt in your own time.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide:-

  • An assortment of fabric scraps for the appliqué shapes

  • Pieces of background fabric, approximately 4 1/2”, for individual practice stuffed appliqués using my starter shapes. For further individual stuffed appliqués using your own shapes, the background fabric should be approximately 1/2” bigger on all sides than the required size of the unit.

  • A larger piece of background fabric for the wholecloth technique - a fat quarter would work well

Please don’t stress about these requirements. They don’t need to be perfectly square, so feel free to use scissors!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing-Machine

  • An Open-Toe Presser Foot (optional but very useful!)

  • Pencil

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Small Embroidery Scissors or Thread Snips

  • Small Embroidery Hoop - approx 3" - 3.5" diameter

  • Long, thin Tweezers

  • A Fine Hand Sewing-Needle - a size 10 milliners works well!

  • A willingness to explore your own creativity!

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

A PDF of some starter shapes will be sent to everyone who signs up for this class, prior to the start. It's important that participants please trace these shapes onto the PAPER side of the fusible web before the class!

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

The ticket price of £30.00 is based on ONE person attending this crafting class.

Dressmaking:

Stretch Jersey Skater-Style Tunic!

One of CraftyMonkies' fave tutors, Gary Millswill be at the helm once again, this time teaching a fabulous dressmaking class which will see you design & create your very own Stretch Jersey Skater-Style Tunic! Here's Gary (getting his skates on!) to tell you all about it...

Introduction by Gary:-

Just by taking a basic old T-Shirt as the starting point, I've created this easy-to-make and wear Stretch Jersey Skater Style Tunic top, that is timeless, suiting all ages and sizes. The style has a flattering scoped cowl neckline, short sleeves, and a flattering swing drape from under the bust down to the hipline, which just makes it so easy to wear. It’s a garment that you could keep on making in different lengths, finishes and details. You can dress it up or down, for a causal look. Looks great over leggings or trousers. In three hours, you will learn how to draft this pattern to fit you, cut out and make the garment in jersey fabric. Learn how you can finish it off to give a real, neat professional finish and all with just an ordinary sewing machine, using a simple zig zag stitch. No specialist equipment is required for this sewing project!

Making your own clothes is so satisfying, but best of all it’s a budget buster!

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You will learn how to draft and make a simple Tunic pattern from a deconstructed T-shirt and some measurements. In the three-hour session you will be learning how to cut and make a Skater Style Tunic in jersey fabric. Sewing by machine, including straight and curved seams, finishing and hems. You will also learn some essential hints and tips to help you get the best results when sewing with a jersey stretch fabric.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is suitable for all levels, particularly perfect for the those who would like to have a go at sewing a simple jersey fabric garment. Gary has many years’ experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of textiles and garment making; his workshops are so enjoyable, fun, and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance.

Fabric & Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A T-Shirt that fits you well, this can be an old one that you don’t mind cutting up or a cheap one from a store or thrift shop. But make sure it is a good fit as this will form the basis of the pattern to draft the tunic from.

  • Wide Cotton Jersey 1.5 metres wide x 2.5 metres length (60” x 98”) use a wide width jersey rather than narrow

  • Good quality Sew-all machine thread in a colour matching the fabric

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • You need space and a surface to draft your pattern and cut out, such as a table, pasting decorating table or long worksurface (it is not ideal to draft and cut your pattern on the floor if you can possibly avoid it)

  • Something to draw against for long straight lines such as a yard stick / long metre rule or a long piece of narrow wooden batten.

  • Optional: A pattern square or quilters square may be useful to square up your fabric but not essential.

  • Tape measure

  • To help with pressing your hems and turn ups you will need a length of either this card or folded paper A4 in length X 2cm (3/4”) wide

  • A sewing machine (zig zag stitch used) alternatives can be used see additional information

  • Either a ball point or jersey machine needle size 12-14 / 70-80

  • Fabric shears, and embroidery scissors

  • Pins

  • Tailors chalk fabric marker pen

  • Iron and ironing-board

  • Optional: A can of laundry spray starch, as this is a handy tip for correcting those curling jersey edges before you sew.

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Seam allowance of ¼” or ½ cm when constructing

  • Zig Zag Stitch size: Approx length 2 width 3.5. You can also construct the Tunic using a specific stretch stitch option found on some new machines, but the basic zig zag works just as well for this project. You can also construct with a serger / over locker on 4 threads if you wish, but again not necessary for this project.

  • Needle size & type either 12-14 / 70-80 Ball Point or Jersey (not a normal needle for woven fabrics as this will ladder your jersey in the construction process!)

  • Please have filled bobbins and threads ready for the start of the session.

  • NOTE: Please check that your sewing machine is working well; therefore, do run-off some stitches on a scrap of jersey fabric prior to the start of the session. You may find a walking foot gives you a better result, but again this is not necessary for this project.

This CraftyMonkies online interactive workshop is being broadcast from the United Kingdom and the class time given is based on British Summer Time (BST). We advise you check via Google Search (or similar) to see corresponding start-time in YOUR location!

Faux Ruched Flowers!

We're delighted to be hosting this Faux Ruched Flowers workshop with the wonderful & hugely talented Karen Miller from Redbird Quilt Co! This class will see participants learn all the steps necessary to prepare both basic & modified decorative treats. Here's Karen to tell us more!...

Introduction by Karen:-

Are you ready to add stunning dimensional fabric flowers to your quilt projects? Join me for this Faux Ruched Flowers technique-based workshop – it’ really is as simple as A... B... C!

Many years ago I attended a retreat with an amazingly skilled artist who specialised in hand appliqué. She taught needle turn appliqué, reverse appliqué, bias stems and these delightful faux ruched flowers. I was enthralled with their beauty so I happily added them to a few of my quilts including Chevron with a Twist for the Moda Bake Shop, A Quilters Doodles Quilt for Aurifil and my Redbird Garden Block for Aurifil’s 2019 Block of the Month Quilt.  They’re easily prepared  - you just need a square of fabric, background fabric, needle, thread and a few carefully placed stitches! I assure you, you will LOVE the interest it adds to your quilt projects! I’m excited to share the process with you - it’s straight forward and simple - let’s do this together!

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this three- hour workshop we’ll learn the steps necessary to prepare both basic and modified Faux Ruched Flowers. We’ll work together to size and trim our square of fabric, secure the edge stitching, attach it to the background fabric and sculpt the flower centre. We’ll cover the use of a quilter’s knot and discuss Karen's favourite needle and thread choices. Once our first flower is in place we’ll switch it up a bit - Karen will share the steps necessary to change the shape, size, petal count and flower density. To wrap it up we’ll take another look at the variety of ruched flowers included in the 'A Quilter’s Doodles Quilt' and discuss other ways to use them. Before you know it you’ll be digging through your work-in-progress quilts to see how you can enhance them by adding a Faux Ruched Flower; you'll maybe want to create two, three or more!...

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is geared toward anyone willing to work with needle and thread! No experience is required. We’ll have you adding these lovely dimensional flowers to your fabric  projects in no time!

Material & Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A printed template PDF will be sent to all class participants a few days prior to the workshop. Please print this out and have it available for the beginning of the session!

  • Air or Water Soluble Fabric Marking Pen – Necessary to mark flower diameter and stitching points. For our learning adventure a #2 lead pencil or fine tip marker will work too.

  • Hand Sewing Needle – Karen's favourite is a Milliner or Straw Needle - Size 11

  • Thread – Any general purpose thread in a colour that will complement your flower fabric. Karen prefers to use Aurifil 40wt thread. She likes the heavier weight and added strength of 40wt (over 50wt).

  • Sharp Scissors – Karen will be using her favourite Elan 4” Embroidery Scissors that have a serrated edge on one side. The serrated edge  helps “grip” the fabric while cutting.

  • Sharp Pins and/or Glue Baste – Karen generally pins her flower to the background fabric before securing it with thread, but you may choose to glue it in place. She recommends using water soluble glue. In the USA 'Roxanne Glue Baste It' would be her first choice (please Google Search for similar products if living outside the USA).

  • OPTIONAL: Qulting or Embroidery Hoop – Some may prefer to 'hoop' their background fabric while attaching the flowers to it. Karen generally works without a hoop!

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • For the first flower you’ll use a 5” square of fabric. Karen loves to use colourful prints or grunge solids. You’ll also need a piece of background fabric 8” x 10” or larger. The background fabric can be plain (muslin) or a colourful solid that contrasts the flower fabric. You’ll be mounting the ruched flower to the background fabric.

  • Be prepared to make more than one flower by having additional 5” flower squares and 8” x 10” background fabrics available at your workspace.

Other requirements relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Good lighting is always helpful while doing handwork.

  • OPTIONAL: A Lightbox or Window & Tape  – Some may like to transfer the markings from the template to their flower fabric by using the backlighting of a lightbox or taping the template and the fabric to a window. Karen generally just 'wings it' with her markings but for this first time around you may choose to use precise markings!
