Online Interactive Workshop: Manx Patchwork

On the first of TWO Online Interactive Workshops we're running on Saturday 16 May 2020, join Sarah in the morning to learn to make a gorgeous Manx Patchwork log cabin block. This can be completed by hand or by machine, and you can make one or a whole quilt’s worth if you like. Sarah will show you how to cut the fabric, create and finish the block, plus add wadding and backing. She will also discuss ways that you can use your blocks including making them into quilts, cushions or bags.

Requirements for this course are as follows:-

  • Plain fabric – 10-inch square per block. You may complete more than one block in the class. Calico is a good option because it is cheap and will never be seen.

  • Wadding and backing fabric – 10-inch square per block.

  • Selection of fat quarters in light and dark shades.

  •  Pins.

  • Sewing machine with a standard sewing machine foot – or a needle and thread if you are hand sewing.

  • Ruler and sharp pencil (they don’t need to be fabric pencils as marks won’t be seen).

  • Ruler, rotary cutter and mat.

Fabric choices

You can be scrappy or simply use two fabrics for your block. However, you do need a contrast and the best way to ensure that is to separate your fabrics into light and dark ones.

Pre-cutting

In order to make a couple of blocks for the afternoon class, please pre-cut your fabric strips. For one block you will need:

  • A total of eight strips from your fat 1/4s measuring 2 inches wide. Cut the strips from selvedge to selvedge (along the long edge) so you should end up with a pile of strips measuring about 20inches by 2 inches. You can also use shorter strips from your stash if you have any as long. You will need a selection of light and dark so cut 4 from the light pile and 4 from the dark.

  • If you want to make more than one block then just replicate this for more blocks.

Re the background, wadding and backing - we will be trimming our finished block to 8 ½ inches when we have completed our block.

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited to 40 on a first-come/first-served basis

Online Interactive Workshop: Quilt-As-You-Go Table Runner

On the second of TWO Online Interactive Workshops we're running on Saturday 16 May 2020, join Sarah in the afternoon to learn to make a quilt-as-you-go Table Runner! This technique will allow you to create and quilt large projects on a small machine because you will quilt it in small, bite-sized and manageable pieces. Take the Manx Patchwork block from this morning (if you took part in the morning class!) or learn a new pinwheel block as you work your way through your stash. Once your blocks are completed you will quilt it and THEN learn how to put the blocks together into a quilted item. Your Table Runner will help you get to grips with this technique, so that a double-bed quilt will no longer feel like an impossible task! Sarah will demonstrate how to use a walking foot and create your masterpiece with or without sashing, and she will explain how the method you use will affect how you work your blocks.

For this class Sarah is aware that there are some people who WILL NOT have been part of the morning class. Therefore, those from the morning session have the option to continue with their Manx Patchwork (until they have at least 2 finished) or join in with a Pinwheel block. Those who have joined for the afternoon only will learn the pinwheel. Once everyone has at least two blocks completed we will discuss quilting for both options, and then use the same technique to make the table runner!

Requirements for this course are as follows (if you have NOT done the morning class):-

  • Selection of fat quarters in light and dark shades.

  • Fabric for binding – the amount is dependent on how many blocks you wish to make. 2 blocks will need less than a fat ¼ of fabric. Do not pre-cut.

  • Wadding and backing fabric – 10 – 12 inch square per block.

  • Sewing machine with a standard sewing machine foot and a walking foot.

  • Ruler, rotary cutter and mat.

If you HAVE done the morning class, you will just need extra for the binding (do not pre-cut):-

Fabric choices

You can be scrappy or simply use two fabrics for your block. However, you do need a contrast and the best way to ensure that is to separate your fabrics into light and dark ones.

Pre-cutting

In order to make a couple of blocks for the afternoon class, please pre-cut your fabric fabrics. For one pinwheel block you will need:

  • Two 5-inch squares from 2 contrasting colours (so four squares in total).

So if you want to make more than one block then just replicate this for more blocks!
