Bullfinch Block

We're delighted to welcome the hugely talented & engaging Janet Clare once again into the wonderful world of online crafting we call 'Monkiesville'! In this class you will use Appliqué to make a block taken from Janet's 'Small Brown British Birds' quilt, namely her Bullfinch Block!

Introduction by Janet:-

Pyrrhula - Bullfinches to you and I! - are beautifully coloured plump birds who are most easily seen on the edges of woodland. They are quiet, shy and secretive so seeing them is a treat. If you go to the RSPB website you can hear their slightly melancholy song. And happily for us they make ideal subjects for appliqué pictures!

Our Bullfinch is from a much larger quilt of mine called ‘Small Brown British Birds’, available on our Etsy shop.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Free motion drawing

  • Fusible appliqué

  • Embroidering text

  • What Henry VIII thought about Bullfinches!

Confident beginners and above - you need to be comfortable with your sewing-machine and hand-sewing!

  • Embroidery floss

  • Stitch ‘n’ tear available via Amazon.

  • 9 ½ inch square of pale background fabric

  • Fabric Scraps in Bullfinch colours- a selection of black, grey, browns and a dull pink – don’t worry too much about the exact shades and look at the reverse of your fabrics too as they will be more muted and subtle in colour and maybe better suited to becoming a Bullfinch

  • Bondaweb or similar double sided Fusible web available via Etsy.

  • Sewing machine set up for free motion quilting- a darning foot, feed dogs down

  • Usual sewing kit and supplies for hand sewing

Well established as a firm 'fan-fave' amongst the CraftyMonkies faithful, leading light of the 'Improv-Quilting' world Nicholas Ball, joins us once again in March to deliver a repeat (or close facsimile of, as no two Nicholas classes are alike!) of his Log Cabin Blocks workshop (first run on 12 September 2020) - in an 'improv-styley' of course!

Introduction by Nicholas:-

The Log Cabin is instantly recognisable as one of the most classic and ubiquitous patchwork blocks. When I stared quilting way back when, I always liked the idea of making a traditional version, yet all the cutting and precision put me off!

If you feel the same and want to try a quick and fun approach to this most beloved of blocks, then this version is perfect. Join me in my liberated log cabin workshop where we’ll use organic piecing to put an improv spin on this versatile block. We’ll look at how to use chain piecing to sped up the process, how to add interest with angular cuts, half square triangle starters and blind bag pulling, as well as a stacked version that’ll give you more blocks in less time, perfect for when you need a quick finish!

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide.

For the basic Log Cabin units, a large variety of strips in solid and print fabric, plus an assortment of smaller scraps to add interest. Feel free to cut your pieces from yardage or use jelly roll pre-cuts. If cutting from yardage, use an assortment of widths, from 1” to 3”.

For the half square triangle starters, rough squares approximately 3-4” in a variety of fabrics.

For the stacked log cabin starters, approximately 10-12” squares of 6-8 different print or solid fabrics.

Please don’t stress about these requirements!!! They are simply a guide and I’ve yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me. They also needn’t be perfectly square or straight, so feel free to use scissors!

This is a technique-based workshop. We will be exploring Log Cabin Blocks and won’t have a finished project in mind. Feel free to make as many or as few of the units as you like. You can combine them into a sampler or continue to work on the project after the workshop by adding more units to it. Don’t feel any pressure to cut up all your precious fabric!

Equipment needed for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A sewing machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

  • Rotary cutter with a new blade

  • Cutting mat

  • Patchwork ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric scissors

  • A bag or small box

  • A willingness to explore your own creativity!

Gentleman Hare Stuffed Figure

We're delighted that our top textile designer/crafter/tutor Gary Mills will be joining us once again to deliver one of his inimitable workshops - go Mad March Hare Crazy with Gary's Gentleman Hare Stuffed Figure class!

Introduction by Gary:-

Spring is in the air! And they say it is the season for 'Mad March Hares'; therefore I am so pleased to introduce you to my very own Gentleman Hare stuffed figure, designed by me for you to make. Looking at him, he does have rather a “portly figure”, dressed in his fine jodhpurs and smart waistcoat, he even has a very gentlemanly cravat tied about his neck to add to his ensemble!

I have really enjoyed using my pattern cutting and sewing skills to come up with this unique pattern and workshop for you to be able to make your very own sophisticated country chap. I will guide you through the processes from start to finish during the zoom session of 4 hours, and alongside I have also produced a clear instructional guide notes with pictures for you to download and follow. I always allow for all types of learners and I know I have covered every aspect for a comprehensive teaching session. Once complete you will have to find a place for him to sit and view; maybe that is on your bed or on a seat by a window, he would even make for a fabulous gift for someone special. (Please note, this is not a toy for children due to the small items like buttons etc)

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This four-hour session is divided into two halves with a short comfort break for 10 minutes in the middle. To begin you will be introduced to the project, and then Gary will guide you through each of the skills processes:-

You will learn how to work through assembling the Hare, with all the relevant pattern pieces. Taking care to keep your seam allowances consistent and then trimming back to avoid any bulk. Once you have turned the figure through you will learn the best way to stuff your Hare figure with toy stuffing, and to avoid a lumpy uneven outcome. You will be hand stitching his articulated arms and adding his facial details. Finally, you will be making his waistcoat and cravat and dressing and finishing him off.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Gary has many years’ experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of textiles; his workshops are so enjoyable, fun, and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance. This workshop is suitable for the Intermediate & Advanced sewer. For those more experienced and advanced you can further hone your skills by working on improved accuracy and stitch ability to achieve a first-class professional finish.

Cathedral Windows Block

The vivacious & hugely talented/versatile Sarah Payne joins us once again, this time running a class which is a repeat of her Cathedral Windows Block workshop, first aired on 8th September 2020 - great for those who missed out first time around and a great opportunity for those who had a go last year to hone those quilt-block skills!...

Introduction by Sarah:-

On this Online Interactive Workshop you will learn a quick and easy method for making this traditional design. The class requirements are for an 18 inch piece using 5 inch squares, however we like to give you options so you can decide what you want to create. How about using 6 inch squares and making a table runner, or 2 ½ inch jelly roll pieces cutting into squares and make a small pillow or hand bag? The choice is yours. Just learn the technique and take it whereever you wish...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You will learn this iconic pattern and how to adapt It in size to make anything you want – quilt, cushion, bag, pillow – the choice is yours. You can choose the size you want the blocks to to be and work with any sized squares you like.

You will also receive a copy of the pattern after the class to refer to along with a guide to turn it into a cushion if that’s how you wish to display it.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This is a perfect class for beginners as well as more experienced quilters who just love this iconic design.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

FABRIC: for this to work well you need a contrast between the arches and the windows. Sarah would suggest the arches (the narrow curved sections) are done in a single plain colour and the rest (patterned) are a mix.

  • For the class we will be making a section 4 square x 4 squares.

  • You will need 16 squares from the patterned fabric and 20 squares from the plain. Which ever size you want to work in – all the squares will be the same size.

  • To give you a guide, you can get twelve 5 inch squares from a fat ¼.

IMPORTANT! Please ensure you pre-cut your fabrics before the class!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Sewing machine and pins – lots of pins!

Curved Piecing Baubles Table-Runner

From far-flung balmy climes (we can see Jude chuckling at this!), the lovely Judith Hollies teams up with the CraftyMonkies once again, this time to deliver a skills-based class where she teaches you how to perfect your Curved-Piecing skills via her Bauble Table-Runner workshop!

Introduction by Jude:-

I've been teaching patchwork & quilting for 13 years. Many of my patterns and designs have been featured in quilting publications and I am particularly passionate about re-purposing textiles, working with denim and using scraps in my designs. My latest CraftyMonkies project sees us get to grips with Drunkard's Path units (Curved Piecing) - once you get the hang of making these Drunkard’s Path units, a whole new world of curved pieced designs and patterns will open up to you: I very much hope you'll join me!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Drunkard’s Path units (Curved Piecing) create these beautiful ‘bauble shapes’. Banish your fear of sewing curves with a quick ‘no pin’ technique. This is a great project for using up co-ordinated scraps (4”-5” square) - you can even plan way ahead by using festive fabrics to create a seasonal runner for Christmas 2021! The co-ordinated placemats complete the set.

While we won’t get the full runner and mats completed in the workshop, you will learn how to make all the component parts. A FREE, comprehensive pattern covering how to assemble and finish the runner and mats will be provided at the end of the workshop.

During this Online Interactive Workshop you will learn:-

* The ‘no pin’ method of sewing Drunkard’s Path units

* How to create the ‘Baubles’ block variations (table runner & mats)

* How to assemble the table runner top and a mat

* How to make continuous bias binding

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Advanced Beginner/intermediate– has confident use of their sewing machine, how to accurately measure and cut fabric using a rotary cutter & ruler & how to achieve different seam allowances on your machine i.e scant ¼”, ¼” and 3/8”.

Introduction by Lucy:-

Over the past year I've been doing a lot of appliqué - by hand and machine - and found that firstly, many of you are a bit intimidated with the process and also that we all seem to approach it a bit differently. After testing out my preferred ways and learning many tips and tricks from others, I thought it would be useful to put together a class where you can test out different appliqué methods. Demystifying the process and finding the appliqué method that works best for you so you can go on to tackle those appliqué projects you have always wanted to make but have not been confident enough to do!
