Online Interactive Workshop

Icons In Stitch!

We're delighted to welcome back the wonderful & hugely talented Gary Mills once again! Not wanting to mention any names (see if you can spot the cultural icon in the pics accompanying this class!), this evening workshop session will see participants engage in needlework & appliqué to create a historic figure and a veritable Icon In Stitch!...

Introduction by Gary:-

Meet my film icon in stitch! This appliqué, designed by me, introduces this recognised iconic female actress and performer of the 'silver screen', captured in this on-trend appliqué and stitched 2D textile in a three-hour workshop.

This workshop is very much a ‘skills bomb’ of processes for you to learn. I have tailored this project for all to enjoy learning a mixture of creative textile skills. You will begin the session firstly by transferring the supplied image onto cloth, next how to use heat bonded adhesive for securing the appliqué pieces; I will then guide you through using both straight and free motion embroidery to add an artistic sketched stitched line to bring your appliqué to life. The workshop is a great start to get to grips with these addictive skilled processes; you will even learn some hand-tinting with colour to finish off your outcome! This class is full of little cheats and 'how-to' tips to get the best results from both yourself and your sewing-machine.

Your finished outcome could be simply framed but would make a great panel for a quilt or even a cushion or bag front - I will discuss with you any ideas that come up through this workshop!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This three-hour session is divided into two halves with a short comfort break for 10 minutes in the middle. To begin you will be introduced to the project, and then I will guide you through each of the skills processes:-

You will learn how to transfer the image, firstly work upon the face, which is hand tinted with water colour paints, then how to cut and then bond onto fabric with additional small pattern pieces to build the image. Prepare the fabric for straight and free-motion embroidery and apply stitches to further secure but also add a unique hand-crafted finish to your work.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Gary has many years’ experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of textiles; his workshops are so enjoyable, fun, and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance. This workshop is suitable for all; if you are a beginner this is a great project to learn and understand the processes of bonded appliqué with addition of free motion stitching for decoration. For those more experienced and advanced you can further hone your skills by working on improved accuracy and artistic ability to achieve a first-class professional finish.

The following items are required for this online interactive workshop:-

  • 16” x 16” (40cm x 40cm) stitch and tear

Warholian Cabbages!

We're really excited to once again welcome back Nicholas Ball for more improvtastic quilting! In May 2021, Nicholas will be with us for TWO dates - Saturday 22/5 and Sunday 23/5 - running his Warholian Cabbages workshop on BOTH dates! We very much hope you'll be able to join us for either of these FOUR-hour classes!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

I sewed my first improv cabbage in 2014 as part of my Vegetable Patch quilt. At that time, it was the hardest thing I had ever made! The sewing room was a complete mess as I struggled with seams and ironed the life out of tiny pieces of fabric. I persevered and now that quilt has become one of my favourite makes and the reason why I’m an improv quilter. Since then, I’ve reinterpreted the cabbage many times and included a larger version in my book Inspiring Improv. From fabric selection to piecing the jigsaw together, making a cabbage quilt is sure to fuel your creativity and expand your improv skills!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop we’ll first take a close-up look at the vegetable itself. Remember, the aim of a cabbage quilt is not to be a photorealistic representation, but to evoke the lines, textures and colours found within. We will begin constructing the individual elements that make up the shape, using my improv triangle and slab techniques. Once we have the main parts made, we will begin piecing these shapes together. The cabbage will be shaped using background fabric and my ring technique, leaving the edges untrimmed ready for quilting.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Intermediate - Advanced: Making a cabbage quilt provides a natural progression from some of my simpler workshops. The cabbage features three main techniques; triangles, slabs and rings. If you’ve already taken a class with me, then this workshop will help you put into practice what you have previously learnt.

Whilst not essential for the workshop, my book Inspiring Improv (published by Lucky Spool, 2019) will expand upon the techniques learnt and provide many more improv tips and tricks. Warholian Cabbage is one of the twelve quilt projects featured and the instructions provided will allow you to work on the quilt in your own time.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide:-

  • An assortment of fat eighths in you chosen cabbage colour, approximately 1 - 1.5m total. Look for tone-on-tone prints or anything with texture.

  • An assortment of cream/white fat eighths, approximately 1m total. Use several shades to add variation to the quilt.

  • Larger scraps in your chosen cabbage colour

  • Larger cream/white scraps

  • Background fabric - approximately 1 - 1.5m. This should be simple and not distracting. Solids work well.

Please don’t stress about these requirements!!! They are simply a guide and I’ve yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me. They don’t need to be perfectly square, so feel free to use scissors!

Using the amounts above should allow you to create a cabbage quilt approximately 40” square. Of course, each quilt will be different. As a general rule of thumb, if you want to make a larger quilt, you’ll need to make larger starter units, so this will require more fabric. If you are purchasing fabric specifically for this workshop, then my advise is to err on the side of caution and purchase a little extra. Please note however that a scrappy look works just as well, so feel free to use what you have. Remember too that these are Warholian cabbages, so you’re not limited to purple and green!

Equipment requirements relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A sewing machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

  • Rotary cutter with a new blade

  • Cutting mat

  • Patchwork ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric scissors

  • Fabric marker or pencil

  • Flatter spray or spray starch (optional but very useful)

  • A willingness to explore your own creativity!

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

Piped Baskets!

From across the wee stretch of water that separates UK mainland & Northern Ireland, the lovely Judith Hollies joins us once again towards the end of May! In this class Judith will take you through all that's needed to make the most wonderful Piped Baskets - take it away Judith!...

Introduction by Judith:-

Have you ever fallen out of love with a patchwork panel, maybe you were trying out a new technique, or accidently cut it the wrong size?! Perhaps you have some orphan blocks or favourite scraps leftover from another project? Well Fabric Baskets (or Piped Baskets/Fabric Buckets) are the perfect project for putting surplus panels or fabrics to good use!

Fabric baskets can be made to any size and because they are quilted (either onto wadding/batting or interfacing) they are sturdy and hold their shape. You can start with the measurements of your panel and work out which size base you need, or start with your preferred base size and calculate the required size panel you need to make (I have a nifty formula for each method, including how to navigate those tricky seam allowances!). Adding piping to projects always adds that special finishing touch. Not only will we be learning how to make our own continuous bias binding (brilliant for co-ordinating your binding to the rest of the panel) but also how to make and attach the piping to give definition and a professional look to your basket.

So if you are in need of sewing-room organising, planters, bathroom buddies or a unique gift idea these made-to-measure Fabric Buckets will meet all of your requirements!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop you will learn how to make one core basket, including:

  • Formulae for calculating base & panel sizes

  • How to make continuous bias binding

  • How to make and attach piping

  • How to set in a circular base

Improv Crumb Blocks & Half-Square-Triangles!

We’re super-excited to have new tutor Chris English on board! Chris is an heirloom quilt maker based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire who specialises in making improv quilts from clothing and found fabrics. Chris is known for his ‘CrumbBlocks that use up any scraps from the beautiful precious pieces you’ve been saving forever to the ‘fugly’ fabrics that you can’t even remember acquiring!

"What the heckety-doo-daa are Crumb Blocks?", we hear you say? Crumb blocks are when you take little pieces of left over fabric and repeatedly join them together to make something. This can used as it is or cut up to make squares, triangles, whatever you fancy as part of a quilt block. Chris has exhibited his dynamic quilts many times at Festival of Quilts as well as an exhibition at the Saltaire Arts Trail, Saltaire. His inaugural class for CraftyMonkies will include making his signature improv crumb blocks and combining that with deconstructing a couple of shirts and combining the two to make an Improv Crumb Half-Square Triangles Cushion Cover. He’ll encourage you to open your mind to fabrics that you may have overlooked, to seeing your scraps and textiles afresh!

Chris studied textile design at university and continues to explore colour, pattern and print through quilt making and more recently, painting. Chris has written for a number of magazines, had his work included in Uppercase ‘Quilted’ (Editor: Janine Vangool) as well as taught at Festival of Quilts and many UK guilds and quilting groups so we are looking forward to following his sustainable and liberated teaching techniques in his new class: 'Welcome aboard, Chris!'

Introduction by Chris:-

Hello, everyone! My name is Chris and I’m a quilt maker based in Huddersfield. I make modern improv quilts from primarily recycled and found fabrics. I love using a variety of fabrics to create something beautiful and unique and I'm very much looking forward to working with you on my inaugural CraftyMonkies workshop. Crumb blocks are when you take little pieces of left over fabric and repeatedly join them together to make something. This can be used as it is or cut up to make squares, triangles, whatever you fancy really, as part of a quilt block!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You’ll learn how to deconstruct a shirt, make improv crumb blocks, how to make half square triangles four at a time and then bring it all together to make an exciting improv cushion cover. We’ll add machine and hand quilting to create an interesting texture on the cover. If you decide not to make a cushion cover then this could be the start of a new quilt!...

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Beginner to Intermediate

This course is suitable for anybody interested in learning about improv and using recycled fabric. The sewing skill required is perfect for beginners!

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

We’re going to bust your stash. No new fabric is required for this workshop.
