Free Motion Stitch/Mixed Media - Summer Meadows

The inimitable and multi-talented Gary Mills joins us once again to host this Free-Motion Stitch & Mixed Media workshop where participants get to create a wonderful canvas based on the theme of Summer Meadows & Grassy Banks!

Introduction by Gary:-

I just love the summer! The warmth, the colours and how nature is literally just buzzing with life. In this mixed media outcome, I feel I have captured in stitch, with colour washes and applique the essence of this time of year; creating something I can view and admire as I let my mind wander back in time when the weather has changed to those darker winter months.

As always in my workshops, I like to offer a ‘skills-bomb’ of processes for you to learn. This is a portfolio of skills for you to take away and continue to build upon in your own creative journey. I have tailored this project for all to enjoy learning a mixture of creative textile skills. You will begin the session firstly by layering found and collected natural fabrics to build your background which you will lightly tint with colour washes from a simple water colour paint box. I will then guide you through using free motion embroidery to add an artistic stitched touch to the pebbles, grasses, and stems. When your confidence has grown, I will show you how to free motion embroider some simple daisies into your image. As your mixed media work comes together you will add colour and hand stitches along with some simple petal shapes to create more interest to your outcome.

This workshop is a great way to get to grips with these addictive skilled processes; The class is full of 'how-to' tips to get the best results from both yourself and your sewing-machine.

Your finished outcome could be simply framed but would make a great panel for a quilt or even a cushion or bag front - I will discuss with you any ideas that come up through this workshop!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This three-hour session is divided into two halves with a short comfort break for 10 minutes in the middle.

To begin, you will be introduced to the project, and then Gary will guide you through each of the skilled processes:-

You will learn how to build up a layered background of fabrics to work upon. You will be using colour washes for your background and then further working into your work with more colour as it develops. You will be practicing free motion embroidery along with complementing hand stitches. Appliqué is used for additional details both initially on the background and then applied to the final layers as your work into your subject of florals.

Outcome measures: 7” x 9”

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Gary has many years’ experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of textiles; his workshops are so enjoyable, fun, and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance. This workshop is suitable for all; if you are a beginner this is a great project to learn and understand mixed media textiles with the range of processes contained within this workshop. For those more experienced and advanced you can further hone your skills by working on improved accuracy and artistic ability to achieve a first-class professional finish.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The following items are required for this online interactive workshop:

  • 11” x 16” (28cm x 41cm) For the background in white or light cream, either light weight washed calico or cotton sheet washed

  • 11” x 16” (28cm x 41cm) stitch and tear

  • 11” x 16” (28cm x 41cm) Bonda web or similar iron on fusible fabric adhesive for bonding applique pieces

  • 11” x 16” (28cm x 41cm) (to layer over the top of the textile) Light weight tule or fine dress net

  • To add depth to the pebbles: Small piece or pieces of Domet or wadding interlining, max required will be 5” x 5” (12cm x 12cm)

  • 11” x 4” (28cm x 10cm) strip of lightweight pure cotton or could be a vintage piece of table linen in a similar weight.

  • Optional or some: A selection of white / cream scraps of vintage washed natural fabrics for bonding onto the background. I have used bits of embroidery anglaise, decorative edges of old vintage table linen and decorative woven stripes from cotton shirt fronts etc.

  • Optional or some: I have used cut-out stylized flower motifs from old cream and white silk and cotton lace and bonded them on to my background. Natural fabrics take colour better as synthetic tends to stay white.

  • Small scraps of coloured cotton; in my example I have used red for the poppies, but any strong colour could work.

  • Threads for free motion machine embroidery; good quality machine threads in a range of greens for grasses and stems, red for stitching poppies, white and yellow for daises and a dark black / dark grey for the rocks and pebbles.

  • Threads for hand stitches and embroidery. You can use Perle or an embroidery cotton such as DCM. Colours used are white, yellow, purple, and pink.

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing machine with an embroidery or darning foot attachment with a new needle size 12-14

  • An iron, sheet of baking parchment for pressing

  • Small sharp embroidery, fabric scissors and small paper scissors

  • Pins & hand sewing needles

  • A palate of water colour paints (a children’s set will do you will be using greens, greys, browns, and colours such as yellow and pink) with a small pot of water

  • A plate for colour mixing

  • A soluble fabric marker pen is useful

  • For applying background colours, you will need a small sponge paint brush or a small square of sponge to apply colour washes to the fabric

  • For applying small dots of colour for the flowers you need a small paintbrush

  • Some fabric glue or PVA glue

  • You will need to dampen your background fabric before applying the colour so a plant mister or damp / wet towel can be used (have paper towel to hand for any spillages or overuse of water)

  • IMPORTANT: To dry your work ready for stitching, you will need a handheld hair dryer!

Improv Crumb Blocks & Improv Half-Square Triangles!

We’re super-excited to have new tutor Chris English on board! Chris is an heirloom quilt maker based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire who specialises in making improv quilts from clothing and found fabrics. Chris is known for his ‘CrumbBlocks that use up any scraps from the beautiful precious pieces you’ve been saving forever to the ‘fugly’ fabrics that you can’t even remember acquiring!

"What the heckety-doo-daa are Crumb Blocks?", we hear you say? Crumb blocks are when you take little pieces of left over fabric and repeatedly join them together to make something. This can used as it is or cut up to make squares, triangles, whatever you fancy as part of a quilt block. Chris has exhibited his dynamic quilts many times at Festival of Quilts as well as an exhibition at the Saltaire Arts Trail, Saltaire. His inaugural class for CraftyMonkies will include making his signature improv crumb blocks and combining that with deconstructing a couple of shirts and combining the two to make an Improv Crumb Half-Square Triangles Cushion Cover. He’ll encourage you to open your mind to fabrics that you may have overlooked, to seeing your scraps and textiles afresh!

Chris studied textile design at university and continues to explore colour, pattern and print through quilt making and more recently, painting. Chris has written for a number of magazines, had his work included in Uppercase ‘Quilted’ (Editor: Janine Vangool) as well as taught at Festival of Quilts and many UK guilds and quilting groups so we are looking forward to following his sustainable and liberated teaching techniques in his new class: 'Welcome aboard, Chris!'

Introduction by Chris:-

Hello, everyone! My name is Chris and I’m a quilt maker based in Huddersfield. I make modern improv quilts from primarily recycled and found fabrics. I love using a variety of fabrics to create something beautiful and unique and I'm very much looking forward to working with you on my inaugural CraftyMonkies workshop. Crumb blocks are when you take little pieces of left over fabric and repeatedly join them together to make something. This can be used as it is or cut up to make squares, triangles, whatever you fancy really, as part of a quilt block!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You’ll learn how to deconstruct a shirt, make improv crumb blocks, how to make half square triangles four at a time and then bring it all together to make an exciting improv cushion cover. We’ll add machine and hand quilting to create an interesting texture on the cover. If you decide not to make a cushion cover then this could be the start of a new quilt!...

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Beginner to Intermediate

This course is suitable for anybody interested in learning about improv and using recycled fabric. The sewing skill required is perfect for beginners!

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

We’re going to bust your stash. No new fabric is required for this workshop.

  • A 60 x 60cm or 24 x 24” piece of wadding

  • Spray basting spray or pins dependent on your basting preference.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this class we’re going to bust your stash! No new fabric is required for this workshop.

Charity shops (assuming they'll be open again in June!) are a great place to find shirts; go for it and choose a pattern or print you wouldn’t normally go for. Cotton is fine but so are other fabrics.

  • A big bag of scraps – including those ones you have been saving forever!...

Half-Square Triangles (Not Improv!)

In this class, the first of her two Speedy Technique skill-building workshops running in June & July, the multi-talented Sarah Payne joins us once again and in this technique-based class she focuses on one of her much-loved Speedy Techniques, namely Half-Square Triangles!

SPECIAL OFFER!!!

If you would like to attend this Speedy Technique class AS WELL AS the other 'speedy' workshop Sarah will be running - Flying Geese on Saturday 17 July 2021 (10.00am-1.00pm, BST) - please navigate to the Pay Online section of our website, where you will find a Double-Whammy Ticket which offers you entry to BOTH classes for £55.00 instead of the individual combined price of £60.00!

Introduction to Half-Square Triangles by Sarah:-

I am a huge fan of 'Speedy Patchwork' techniques! If you have a pattern that requires a lot of a particular block then the quicker you can make them the better. For this skills-building class I will be introducing you to a number of different ways to create Half-Square Triangles – one of the most commonly used blocks in patchwork.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Sarah will show you several different ways of making Half-Square Triangles and a few variations with Quarter-Square Triangles

She will demonstrate each method and then show you how to change the sizes of block that you need to make. Sarah will outline the strengths and weaknesses of each method, and help you choose which method suits your needs for a given project. She will show you how to mix them with squares to create a wide range of traditional quilt block designs. Sarah will also cover design options for HST projects!

This is a technique-based class rather than a project class, so you will mostly be watching the class rather than sewing along, so please bring along a notebook and pen. You can choose to join in with one of the methods for creating 8 sets of HSTs, or simply watch. Sarah will supply you with a 'cheat sheet' with the measurements after the class!

We're absolutely delighted to welcome Nicholas Ball into the CraftyMonkies spotlight once again and have no doubt that you'll absolutely love his Improv Triangles workshop, a class we first ran back in August 2020!

Due to the expected popular demand, in the past 24hrs Nicholas has agreed to REPEAT this class on Sunday 27 June (4.00-7.00pm, BST) so if you've not been able to secure a place for this Friday 25 June (6.00-9.00pm, BST) date, please see the relevant listing on our website for the Sunday class!

If you missed this version of Improv Triangles last year, or are new to CraftyMonkies, you're in for a treat - one thing we would stress is please don't wait to book your place on either Friday 25 June (6.00-9.00pm, BST) or Sunday 27 June (4.00-7.00pm, BST) - any class taught by Nicholas tends to sell out quickly!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

What I love most about my Triangle technique is the versatility of the units created. This simple shape has so many uses in improvised patchwork and is a great skill to add to your improv arsenal. Where some people see trees, others see gnome hats! You can use the familiarity of triangles to suggest all sorts things in your compositions. After you make a few you’ll soon find the only limit is your imagination!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You'll learn how to throw off the dreaded 'shackles of constraint' and let your inner-creative run wild with this fabulous technique-based improv-quilting class! In the workshop you will first learn Nicholas' basic method for creating improv triangle units. We’ll then look at adding variation to these units using inserts. Finally, a quick and easy stacked triangle method will be explored, giving you three different way to use triangles. We will also discuss fabric choice and the different ways to arrange your sewn units into a finished composition.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Beginner to Intermediate - This workshop is suitable for anybody interested in learning about improv quilting. The sewing This class is suitable for all skill levels. It’s perfect for competent sewers who want to explore more liberated piecing, perhaps as a change from traditional quilting, but it’s also a perfect improv introduction for quilters who are just starting out and have little quilting experience.

Material/Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide:-

For the basic triangles, large scraps of solid and print fabric in square-ish and rectangle-ish pieces work well for the background, whilst smaller scraps are perfect for the triangles. Feel free to cut your pieces from yardage. The background pieces shouldn’t be smaller than approximately 4” for your first attempt at this technique.

For the insert triangles, the same sized background pieces as the basic triangles can be used. For the triangles, strips of approximately 1.5” - 2.5”. These need not be full width of fabric, so feel free to use what you have.

Finally, for the stacked triangles, an assortment of squares and triangles, anything from 5” to as large as you want! As the name suggests, we will be cutting through stacks of fabric, so as long as your prices are all roughly the same size, anything will work. A layer cake or charm pack would be perfect.

Please don’t stress about these requirements!!! They are simply a guide and Nicholas has yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using these techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with Nicholas. They also needn’t be perfectly square or straight, so feel free to use scissors!

This is very much a Technique-based workshop. We will be exploring triangles and won’t have a finished project in mind. Feel free to make as many or as few of the units as you like. You can combine them into a sampler or continue to work on the project after the workshop by adding more units to it. Don’t feel any pressure to cut up all your precious fabric!!!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing-Machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (Nicholas recommends Aurifil)

Improv Triangles!

We're absolutely delighted to welcome Nicholas Ball into the CraftyMonkies spotlight for a REPEAT of his Improv Triangles workshop, which will first be available to attend TWO days before, on Friday 25 June (6.00-9.00pm, BST)!

For all of you who might not be aware, we first ran a version of this class by Nicholas back in August 2020!

If you missed it last year, or are new to CraftyMonkies, please don't wait to book your place on either Friday 25 June, 6.00-9.00pm (BST) or Sunday 27 June, 4.00-7.00pm (BST) - any class taught by Nicholas tends to sell-out fast!...

  • Rotary Cutter - with a new blade!

  • Cutting Mat

  • Patchwork Ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Most important of all - a willingness to explore your own creativity! It's going to be FUN!!!...
