Cluck-Cluck Chicken

Pattern Weight/Pin-Cushion!

The wonderful Gary Mills can't wait to host another of his FREE One-Hour Taster Workshops and we're sure you'll absolutely LOVE his Cluck-Cluck-Chicken Pattern Weight/Pin-Cushion project, a perfect introduction to creating something 'crafty' and an ideal insight into what a CraftyMonkies Online Interactive Workshop with one of our top craft experts is all about - we really hope you'll join Gary & Rachel for this one!…

Introduction by Gary:-

Here is an opportunity to join a fabulous CraftyMonkies Zoom workshop to make these adorable yet useful chicken styled Pattern Weights - or you can simply turn them into a Pin-Cushion! If this is your first time joining us at CraftyMonkies or you have never joined in on a Zoom workshop before this class is aimed specifically for you to give it a try; all you need is two small squares of fabric, a couple of very small squares of felt, some thread and a needle and one hour spent on this workshop with me, Gary Mills, where I will carefully guide you through the process.

You will be amazed how easy these little chickens are to make once you have been shown the process… In no time at all you will have your very own brood nesting down in your workshop being very useful for all your future sewing projects; be that for holding a paper pattern down in place or even keeping your pins tidy…. Ouch! These feathered friends are also such a great scrap-buster. What isn’t there to like about this project?

This workshop will be full of FUN as always, the session will be relaxed with plenty of conversational chatter from Rachel and myself; we look forward to having you come along for this creative session!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The workshop covers simple hand stitching with a needle and thread. Or you can machine stitch if you wish. You will learn to cut out a simple square, cut small pieces of felt fabric for the details and follow a process in stages to achieve the outcome. There is measuring and easy sewing assembly and turning through to make the chicken.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is suitable for a beginner to sewing and accessory making, but also a beginner to taking part in a Zoom workshop.

Material & Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

To Make one Chicken:-

  • 2 x 4 ½” (inch) square of chosen cotton fabric (Gary has chosen a red and white theme for his chickens)

  • Matching colour sewing thread.

  • Small rectangle 2” x 4” red & yellow felt (although you can use woven fabric if that is what you have-to-hand)

  • For the eyes: 2 x 1/2” buttons or push through toy eyes (Gary has used the simple toy eyes you can purchase for most haberdashery stores, but a simple sewn button can be used!)

  • To stuff or weight the chicken you can use 4oz of either dried rice or fresh cat litter (or similar) for the weighted chicken or for a pin cushion 2oz of polyester fibre toy stuffing.

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sharp medium sized sewing needle

  • Fabric scissors

  • Small sewing scissors for cutting threads and trimming.

  • Tape measure, ruler, or quilting square to measure and cut 2x squares of fabric.

  • Either a fabric pen or pencil to mark points on the pattern

The following is optional but not necessary: pinking shears to cut the chicken’s comb edge, a bradawl if using the push through toy eyes, a chopstick or similar to push out the corners.

NOTE: You can use a sewing machine if you prefer for this project; a basic straight stitch size 2 – 2.5

is required and a medium sized needle size 10-12. Please have filled bobbins and threads ready for the start of the session. Please check that your sewing machine is working well; therefore, do run off some stitches on a scrap of fabric prior to the start of the session.

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The FREE PATTERN will be sent to you via email to download once you have booked; this is to be printed in advance of the course.

  • Print off pattern (A4 to fit no borders)

  • Please cut out all pattern pieces prior to the start of the workshop.

  • Seam allowance will be included in the pattern ¼” or ½ cm

Online Interactive Workshop

Demystifing Hand Quilting!

IMPORTANT:

In our electronic Newsletter (dated 02.07.21) we inadvertently confused people by stating that Sarah's class on this date ran from 4.00 - 7.00pm, BST - that was INCORRECT!

The time of the class is as listed here on our website:

Saturday 04 September from 10.00am-1.00pm, BST - apologies for any confusion caused!

CraftyMonkies stalwart Sarah Payne is set to join us once again in September with a class which we're sure you're all going to just love! Sarah debunks the reticence that some have over getting to grips with Hand Quilting and gets you to embrace this most traditional of quilt finishing techniques!...

Introduction by Sarah:-

Hand quilting as a traditional quilt finishing technique which has been around as long as quilts have. It is a beautiful way to complete a project and is perfect for those occasions when your quilt just screams out for that authentic finishing touch. You can keep it simple with straight lines or really go to town with the design and make it a feature of your project.

In this class we will talk about various types of hand quilting and good practice, but the sample you will be making will be a real feature. I am supplying a template for you to use to create a detailed symmetrical design for a 10 inch finished block. You can make it into a placemat or a cushion if you like – but in this case the stitching is going to be the star.

This class is perfect for beginners and assumes no previous knowledge at all.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Hand Quilting Tools

Frame or Hoop? When to use, which to choose and why!

            Needles and Threads - Options...

            Thimble – Yes or No?!!

            What’s in a wadding?

  • Preparing your quilt.

  • Creating and marking your design.

  • Starting and finishing a thread.

  • Quilting stitches.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This class is perfect for beginners and assumes no previous knowledge at all.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing needle – you have choices when it comes to needles, but don’t worry too much about the exact ones you use for the class. The bigger the number on a needle, the finer or smaller it is!

  •

  • All of the following will be fine:-

  • “Betweens” – these are hand quilting needles and you can use a size 8 or 9 needle and when comfortable with that size try a smaller size.

  • Embroidery needles – I like these because the eyes tend to be a little larger so you can use a thicker thread for your hand quilting. Again a size 8 or 9 will be fine. Pony and Clover both do great examples.

  • Sharps – they have a pointy tip and are a little longer than Betweens. Again an 8 or a 9 will be fine.

  • Embroidery or small snip scissors.

  • Paper scissors.

  • Marking tool – water erasable is best. Just check it does erase from your chosen fabric before using in class.

  • We wont be using a frame or hoop for this class so don’t panic about getting one.

  • Basting method – safety pins or 505 fabric spray glue. You can also stitch baste the layers together as well. All methods will be discussed during the class.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • 12 inch square of plain or lightly patterned fabric for the front and back of your piece.

  • 14 inch square of wadding or batting.

  • Thread - Sarah suggests a stranded cotton for this project. You can use a perle 8 (assuming that the eye of the needle will allow you to use thread that thick). We want the quilting to be the star, so using a thicker thread is a great option!

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You will be supplied a Template for the quilting design. Just make sure you print it out before the class!

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

Regrettably, tickets for this class are now SOLD OUT!

Please be sure to book your place early to avoid disappointment!

The information below is for all those who were successful in securing a place on the workshop taking place on

Friday 17 September 2021!

The hugely popular and supremely talented Nicholas Ball dons his CraftyMonkies superhero outfit once again, this time teaching you all about those all-important Quilt Edge Finishings that will help 'seal the deal' on your crafting masterpieces!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

When I began quilting I would often hear others say that binding the raw edges of the quilt was their least favourite part of the process. I couldn’t disagree more, even after the countless quilts I’ve bound since then. I love binding and it often surprises people when I tell them that enthusiastically. For me, the finishing of the quilt’s edge is a culmination of all the hard work that has gone into making it. I love each step, from choosing the fabric to hand stitching it down. I enjoy deciding on an edge treatment that suits the style of quilt and love to share all the other alternatives to double fold binding.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop we’ll explore several different options you can use to finish the edges of your quilted projects. We’ll start by looking at some examples of my favourite types of finish before working through my preferred technique for simple binding step-by-step. I have perfected the way I make and attach my binding and you maybe surprised by some of the extra steps I take to ensure a great finish. I’ll be showing you how I cut my strips, press, machine stitch and hand finish. After looking at binding a curved and angular edge, we’ll move on to facings, for both a straight and wonky edge, before finishing the workshop with a pillow case method and a traditional Welsh butted technique.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

BEGINNER! A good, go-to binding technique is a must for every quilter, regardless of their skill or ability. This workshop will show you how easy it is to achieve a neat finish, whatever method you choose, even if you’ve never bound a quilt before!

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for the workshop, my book Inspiring Improv (published by Lucky Spool, 2019) will expand upon the straight binding learnt and provide six improv piecing techniques which you can use to make a new quilt to practice your new finishings skills on.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

As this is a technique-based class, rather than binding a finished quilt, you may prefer to make a small sample of each technique so that you can practice and have a reference to look back at. Of course, if you have a quilt that you just can’t wait to bind, please use that!

Seven prepared quilt sandwiches comprising of a fabric top, wadding and backing, approximately 12” - 15” square. Six of these can be quilted together if you wish, or they can be basted with either thread or spray adhesive. Avoid pins as they may get in the way when attaching the binding. If you do chose to quilt them, leave a border of approximately one inch un-quilted around the edge of one square.

Approximately 3/4 metre of fabric for the bindings and facings. This doesn't have to be the best from your stash, though it should be WOF so I can show you how to cut strips. A simple solid will work and you can use the same for all the techniques requiring additional fabric.

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing-Machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

  • Rotary Cutter - with a new blade!

  • Cutting Mat

  • Patchwork Ruler (we can make any size work, but a 6” x 24” and a smaller 1” x 12” are handy sizes for this classes)

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Fabric Marker or Pencil that shows up on your chosen binding fabric.

  • Hand-Sewing Needle (I use a long milliners needle with a small eye)

  • Point Turner or Chopstick.

  • A Walking Foot - not essential, but very useful!

PLEASE NOTE: This is a REPEAT of the class first run on 17/9/21!

Quilt Edge Finishings!

Due to popular demand - and the fact that the first date for this class on Friday 17 September has now Sold Out - the hugely popular and supremely talented Nicholas Ball dons his CraftyMonkies superhero outfit once again, this time teaching you all about those all-important Quilt Edge Finishings that will help 'seal the deal' on your crafting masterpieces!...

Introduction by Jennie:-

I’m a big fan of organizing my space, and two of my favourite things to use are drawstring bags and fabric baskets. The Ada Drawstring Bucket combines the best of both. It functions like a fabric basket when you need it to, but can be secured at the top with the drawstring for storage or travelling. To bring your organizing to the next level, the bag has a handy divider to help you sort your projects or items inside each bag.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop will teach you how to make your own Ada Drawstring Bucket, which includes cutting, interfacing, creating a boxed corner, and inserting the divider. Additionally, learn how to apply the divider feature to other similarly constructed bags!

Beginner

Understanding of using the sewing machine, how to cut fabrics, and basic sewing are required.

  • 48” 5mm cotton cord or ribbon for drawstring, as a substitute, use soft laundry line

  • Matching thread for sewing and top stitching

The information below is for all those who were successful in securing a place on the workshop taking place on

Sunday 03 October 2021!

We're once again delighted to welcome another of our Stateside crafting gurus, namely Melissa Averinos, back into the CraftyMonkies fold; following on from her hugely successful & inspiring Faces class in July, this month Melissa turns her attention to Making Cat Faces!...

Melissa Averinos is an artist and quilter. She is the maker of My Brother’s Jeans (Best In Show at QuiltCon 2016) and Face #1 (Judge’s Choice QuiltCon 2015) and has designed fabric for Free Spirit, Andover, Hoffman and Wilmington Prints. Melissa is the author of several craft books, her most recent on the face collage technique taught here at CraftyMonkies in July 2021 (Making Faces In Fabric, C&T Publishing/Stash Books, 2018).

Introduction by Melissa:-

Hi! I simply can’t wait to hang out with you once again and make some Cat Faces! My teaching approach is lighthearted, fun and inclusive. I create a nurturing environment for people to let go of their pre-conceived ideas about whether they are artists or not, to create with childlike joy and release any need to do things ‘perfectly’.

You can totally do this! And it is just plain FUN. Also I will probably ask you to show your cats in our Zoom!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Please note that this is not a cat ‘portrait’ class, as we will be conjuring kitties from our imagination, rather than trying to capture the likeness of a particular cat (however perfect and precious they may be).

Here’s how it will go down:

- First up, a fun and easy drawing lesson using simple shapes to create cat faces

Then we move on to play time with fabric, where I cover:-

- Fabric selection

- Adhesive options

- Variations of shapes to cute to create cats with different personalities

- The benefits of working in multiples

Then I will talk about next steps for you to take with your work after class. (There is no sewing in this class because our time together is much better spent collaging the cat faces!). I will cover:-

- Benefits and drawbacks of different stabilisers

- Basic tips for how to stitch your collage, including thread colour choice

- Examples/inspiration of different ways/styles of stitching a collage and how they change the look of the piece (i use my samples of people face collages for this)

- Show and tell of examples of cat face collages to inspire you and show a range of takes on the technique

- Examples and suggestions for ways to use your collage panel after it’s stitched

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:

- Beginner to experienced quilters who are interested in exploring an art quilting technique presented in a modern way

- Beginner to experienced art quilters looking to have some cat-themed fun!

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

- The background and collage fabrics can be in any colours you like

- They should be solids and/or very small scale prints

- If they are prints, they should be low contrast, subtle tonal prints, or ‘blender’ fabrics*

- The idea here is that we don‘t want to be distracted by large, busy or contrasting prints

- If wrinkly fabric is going to annoy you, press in advance or have your iron and pressing surface accessible during class

BACKGROUND Fabric:

- You will need at least 4 fat quarters of quilting cotton (or roughly fat quarter size, exact measurements are not necessary)

- This is the fabric we will collage the kitty faces onto (so don’t bring your Precious for this!)

- Bring 2 light colour, one medium and one dark

COLLAGE Fabrics:

- Assorted scraps in a range of sizes (you might use a one-inch piece on an eye or a an 8”x2” piece on the hair)

- As above, these should be low-contrast, small scale prints or solids

- Include lights, mediums and darks

- Include white and black

- If you aren’t a scrap saver, don’t worry! just bring some fat quarters that you don't mind cutting into.

* If this is stressing you out and you don’t understand what i mean, definitely DO NOT fret over it! Just bring a good variety of solids and all will be well.

Other Supplies/Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Plain white printer paper - at least 20 sheets (yes: printer paper, not a notebook or a sketchbook. trust me!)

  • Regular pencil

  • Fabric scissors

  • Small scissors (like embroidery scissors) if you have them

  • Elmer’s washable glue stick (or similar)

  • Optional - Tweezers!

Sizing Guide relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Here is a little pep-talk from me to you!:-

I know learning a new thing can be intimidating, but you can totally do this. I show you super simple ways that anyone can use to make a kitty face in fabric! I love raw edge appliqué because it’s fast (compared to piecing) and it’s so forgiving! Don’t like what you did? Add some fabric on top. Like I always say about painting, if you don’t like it you can just put more over it and then you have the extra benefit of all that excellent texture!

This class is about making cat faces the way YOU make cat faces, which you will discover as you go! I’ll teach you the basic framework and then I will encourage you to let go of expectations and just PLAY - and show me your cats!...
