Improv Triangles Sewalong!

Regrettably, tickets for this class are now

SOLD OUT!

The information below is for all those who were successful in securing a place on the workshop!

We're absolutely delighted to welcome 'improv-fan-fave' Nicholas Ball back into the CraftyMonkies spotlight once again, this time for a slight twist on his ususal Improv Triangles workshop theme; Nicholas is running a festive-flavoured theme which will accompany his Improv Triangles Sewalong on Instagram during October! Beyond excited? Us too!!!...

For all of you who might not be aware, we first ran a version of Improv Triangles by Nicholas in August 2020, then repeated it in June 2021. If you missed it, or are new to CraftyMonkies, please don't wait to book your place for this Saturday 16 October, 4.00-7.00pm (BST) workshop - any class taught by Nicholas tends to sell-out super-duper-quickly!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

What I love most about my Improv Triangles technique is the versatility of the units created. This simple shape has so many uses in improvised patchwork and is a great skill to add to your improv arsenal. Where some people see trees, others see gnome hats! You can use the familiarity of triangles to suggest all sorts of things in your compositions. After you make a few, you’ll soon find the only limit is your imagination! This workshop is specifically themed as a companion to the festive edition of the #improvtrianglesewalong I’m hosted on Instagram throughout October. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, the triangle technique can be used to create a fun and whimsical quilt that can be interpreted in anyway you like! I do hope you'll join me...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You'll learn how to throw off the dreaded 'shackles of constraint' and let your inner-creative run wild with this fabulous technique-based improv-quilting class! In the workshop you will first learn Nicholas' basic method for creating improv triangle units. We’ll then look at adding some festive variation using exciting piecing and embellishing techniques. We will also discuss the different ways to arrange your sewn units into a finished composition and the many projects they can be used for.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This class is suitable for all skill levels. It’s perfect for competent sewers who want to explore more liberated piecing, perhaps as a change from traditional quilting, but it’s also a perfect improv introduction for quilters who are just starting out and have little quilting experience.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for this workshop, Nicholas' book Inspiring Improv (published by Lucky Spool, 2019) will give you excellent background insight into his approach and variety of work, which you can use in your onward crafting journey.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide:-

  • For the basic triangles, large scraps of solid and print fabric in square-ish and rectangle-ish pieces work well for the background, whilst smaller scraps are perfect for the triangles. Feel free to cut your pieces from yardage. The background pieces shouldn’t be smaller than approximately 4” for your first attempt at this technique. Look out for Nicholas’ first Instagram post in on the 4th October when he'll be discussing fabric requirements in more detail as part of the Sewalong.

  • An assortment of mini ric rac.  Look for doll ric rac that is approximately 3mm wide.

  • Small pieces of mini pom-pom trim.  Again, buy the smallest size you can find.

  • Various sequins, buttons and beads for embellishment.

Please don’t stress about these requirements!!! They are simply a guide and Nicholas has yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using these techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with Nicholas. They also needn’t be perfectly square or straight, so feel free to use scissors!

This is very much a technique-based workshop. We will be exploring triangles and won’t have a finished project in mind. Feel free to make as many or as few of the units as you like. You can combine them into a sampler or continue to work on the project after the workshop by adding more units to it. Don’t feel any pressure to cut up all your precious fabric!!!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing-Machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (Nicholas recommends Aurifil)

  • Rotary Cutter - with a new blade!

  • Cutting Mat

  • Patchwork Ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Most important of all - a willingness to explore your own creativity! We're going to have FUN!!!...

SOLD OUT!

The information below is for all those who were successful in securing a place on the workshop!

With tickets to the first Making Cat Faces class on Sunday 3rd October selling out within hours, we're delighted to announce this EXTRA DATE for Making Cat Faces with Melissa Averinos! This workshop ( a repeat of what Melissa will teach on Sunday 3rd October 2021) will take place on Friday 29 October (6.00-9.00pm, BST)!

A huge 'Welcome Back' to another of our Stateside crafting gurus, Melissa Averinos! Following on from her hugely successful & inspiring Making Faces class in July 2021...

Melissa Averinos is an artist and quilter. She is the maker of My Brother’s Jeans (Best In Show at QuiltCon 2016) and Face #1 (Judge’s Choice QuiltCon 2015) and has designed fabric for Free Spirit, Andover, Hoffman and Wilmington Prints. Melissa is the author of several craft books, her most recent on the face collage technique taught here at CraftyMonkies in July 2021 (Making Faces In Fabric, C&T Publishing/Stash Books, 2018).

Introduction by Melissa:-

Hi! I simply can’t wait to hang out with you once again and make some Cat Faces! My teaching approach is lighthearted, fun and inclusive. I create a nurturing environment for people to let go of their pre-conceived ideas about whether they are artists or not, to create with childlike joy and release any need to do things ‘perfectly’.

You can totally do this! And it is just plain FUN. Also I will probably ask you to show your cats in our Zoom!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Please note that this is not a cat ‘portrait’ class, as we will be conjuring kitties from our imagination, rather than trying to capture the likeness of a particular cat (however perfect and precious they may be).

Here’s how it will go down:

- First up, a fun and easy drawing lesson using simple shapes to create cat faces

Then we move on to play time with fabric, where I cover:-

- Fabric selection

- Adhesive options

- Variations of shapes to cute to create cats with different personalities

- The benefits of working in multiples

Then I will talk about next steps for you to take with your work after class. (There is no sewing in this class because our time together is much better spent collaging the cat faces!). I will cover:-

- Benefits and drawbacks of different stabilisers

- Basic tips for how to stitch your collage, including thread colour choice

- Examples/inspiration of different ways/styles of stitching a collage and how they change the look of the piece (i use my samples of people face collages for this)

- Show and tell of examples of cat face collages to inspire you and show a range of takes on the technique

- Examples and suggestions for ways to use your collage panel after it’s stitched

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:

- Beginner to experienced quilters who are interested in exploring an art quilting technique presented in a modern way

- Beginner to experienced art quilters looking to have some cat-themed fun!

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

- The background and collage fabrics can be in any colours you like

- They should be solids and/or very small scale prints

- If they are prints, they should be low contrast, subtle tonal prints, or ‘blender’ fabrics*

- The idea here is that we don‘t want to be distracted by large, busy or contrasting prints

- If wrinkly fabric is going to annoy you, press in advance or have your iron and pressing surface accessible during class

BACKGROUND Fabric:

- You will need at least 4 fat quarters of quilting cotton (or roughly fat quarter size, exact measurements are not necessary)

- This is the fabric we will collage the kitty faces onto (so don’t bring your Precious for this!)

- Bring 2 light colour, one medium and one dark

COLLAGE Fabrics:

- Assorted scraps in a range of sizes (you might use a one-inch piece on an eye or a an 8”x2” piece on the hair)

- As above, these should be low-contrast, small scale prints or solids

- Include lights, mediums and darks

- Include white and black

- If you aren’t a scrap saver, don’t worry! just bring some fat quarters that you don't mind cutting into.

* If this is stressing you out and you don’t understand what i mean, definitely DO NOT fret over it! Just bring a good variety of solids and all will be well.

Other Supplies/Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Plain white printer paper - at least 20 sheets (yes: printer paper, not a notebook or a sketchbook. trust me!)

  • Regular pencil

  • Fabric scissors

  • Small scissors (like embroidery scissors) if you have them

  • Elmer’s washable glue stick (or similar)

  • Optional - Tweezers!

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

No patterns needed!

Sizing Guide relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

No sizing guide needed!

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Here is a little pep-talk from me to you!:-

I know learning a new thing can be intimidating, but you can totally do this. I show you super simple ways that anyone can use to make a kitty face in fabric! I love raw edge appliqué because it’s fast (compared to piecing) and it’s so forgiving! Don’t like what you did? Add some fabric on top. Like I always say about painting, if you don’t like it you can just put more over it and then you have the extra benefit of all that excellent texture!

This class is about making cat faces the way YOU make cat faces, which you will discover as you go! I’ll teach you the basic framework and then I will encourage you to let go of expectations and just PLAY - and show me your cats!...

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

The ticket price of £30.00 is based on ONE person attending this crafting class.

We're delighted to once again welcome back the wonderful Gary Mills for another of his inimitable workshops; on this occasion Gary re-visits a class he first ran back in 2020 but with some tweaks & adjustments to his original pattern. Voila his fabulous NEW Stretch Jersey Lounge Pants workshop!…

Introduction by Gary:-

Following on from the popular and well received Lounge Pants workshop I ran back in 2020, I have re-worked, re-fitted and added a few tweaks to the original Pattern for knitted and jersey fabrics! The Pattern now comes with additional internal pockets as well!

I just love my Lounge Pants and I’ve made mine along a festive theme, ready for opening my presents first thing on Christmas morning! I could even make the whole family some for a matching festive theme: huge fun!

Even if you don’t fancy a Santa print for your Lounge Pants, these loose trousers have become so popular for casual dressing, simply chilling around the house or going to exercise class and using Stretch Jersey makes theme even more comfy to wear. Who doesn't like being lovely & toasty throughout the Autumn/Winter?!...

I will guide you through the processes from start to finish, beginning with sending you my easy-to-understand PATTERN GUIDE WORKSHEET. Just by taking some body measurements and doing some simple calculation you will learn how to draft your very own easy-to-wear Jersey Fabric Lounge Pants pattern.  Then, meeting you online during the Zoom workshop we can cut out, stitch, and make them during the session. Plus, I'll be giving you hints and tips with constructing with Stretch, troubleshooting with fit and there'll be lots of chat and fun with Rachel, me and... YOU!

I really hope you'll join me for this fun class - I can’t wait to see you all!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You will learn how to draft and make a simple trouser pattern from measurements and simple calculations.

In the three-hour session you will be learning how to cut and make a pair of lounge pants in jersey fabric. You'll be sewing by machine, including straight and curved seams, addressing finishing & hems and elasticated waistband.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is suitable for all levels, particularly perfect for those who would like to have a go at sewing a simple jersey fabric garment. Gary has many years’ experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of textiles and garment making; his workshops are so enjoyable, fun, and very well organised and Gary always delivers clear and patient guidance.

Fabric & Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Paper to cut out your pattern (you can use joined sheets of newspaper, thin lining wallpaper or similar) width and length see the below calculation

  • Cotton Jersey or similar see the below estimation

  • Good quality Sew-all machine thread in a colour matching the fabric

  • Waist band elastic 1 ¼  “ (3cm) wide x waist measurement

For the Paper to Draft Your Pattern: You will need a rectangle which measures:-

WIDTH: Take the measurement around your widest lower body circumference i.e., around the hip on the fullest part of your bottom, but if your waist is wider than your hip measurement, please use that. (This is measurement “W”)

To calculate the width using inches, take the value of:

W add 1.5 multiply by 4 divide by 5.5 = width of paper in inches

To calculate the width using centimetres, take the value of:

W add 4 multiply by 4 divide by 5.5 = width of paper in centimetres

LENGTH: To calculate the length of your paper for pattern drafting you need to decide how long you want your finished length of your trousers to be from your side waist. Measure down from your side at waist level to where you would like your trousers to finish, this could be calf, ankle or lower. (This is measurement “L”)

To calculate the length using inches, take the value of

L add 4 = length of paper in inches

To calculate the length using centimetres, take the value of

L add 10 = length of paper in centimetres

Fabric Estimation:

The amount you require is down to the size of the trousers you are cutting. Stretch jersey fabric comes in usually wide widths, (average 60” 150cm wide) but you must note that unlike woven fabric it has both stretch across the width and very often stretch on the length… But, the amount of stretch and return of these two will vary. Therefore, you must always cut your pattern with the most stretch going ACROSS the body and NOT down the body!

If you take your paper width measurement from above paper width calculation and double it (one for each leg), then that is the total width of fabric you will use. The trouser pattern has tapered legs to the ankle, and therefore if you are unable to get the two widths of the paper pattern side by side you will be able to drop down the length of the pattern to just past the crutch line to then fit another leg pattern in there. Additionally, you will also require a 24” wide x 12” length rectangle of fabric to make the pockets.

EXAMPLE:-

A hip measurement of 40” (102cm) and finished length of 39” (99cm) > Fabric required= 60” (150cm) x 60” (150cm)!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Somewhere to draft your pattern and cut out, such as a table, pasting decorating table or long worksurface (it is not ideal to draft and cut your pattern on the floor if you can possibly avoid it)

  • Something to draw against for long straight lines such as a yard stick / long metre rule or a long piece of narrow wooden batten.

  • Something to draw curves for your crutch line either a French Curve or you can use a saucer and small tea plate to make curved lines

  • Optional a pattern square or quilters square may be useful to square up your fabric but not essential.

  • Sharp pencil & rubber

  • Tape measure

  • Paper sissicors

  • A sewing machine (zig zag stitch used) alternatives can bee used see additional information

  • Either a ball point or jersey machine needle size 12-14 / 70-80

  • Fabric shears, and embroidery scissors

  • Pins

  • Tailors chalk fabric marker pen

  • Iron and board

  • Optional: A can of laundry spray starch, as this is a handy tip for correcting those curling jersey edges before you sew.

  • To thread through the waistband elastic, you will need a large safety pin or kilt pin

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

To create your own sized paper pattern Gary's FREE PATTERN GUIDE WORKSHEET will be sent to you via email to download. Please print this off, read through and prepare prior to the commencement of the workshop!

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Print off the PATTERN GUIDE

  • Seam allowance will be included in the pattern calculations of ¼” or ½ cm.

  • Zig-Zag Stitch size: Length 2, Width 3.5. You can also construct the lounge pants using a specific stretch stitch option found on some new machines, but the basic zig zag works just as well for this project. You can also construct with a  serger / over locker on 4 threads if you wish, but again this is not necessary for this project.

  • Needle size & type are either 12-14 / 70-80 Ball Point or Jersey (NOT a normal needle for woven fabrics as this      will ladder your jersey in the construction process!!!)

  • Please have filled bobbins and threads ready for the start of the session.

NOTE: Please check that your sewing-machine is working well; I suggest running-off some stitches on a scrap of jersey fabric prior to the start of the session. You may find a Walking Foot gives you a better result, but again this is NOT necessary for this project!

Talisman Tiny Quilt!

We're absolutely delighted to announce we’ve finally pinned (get the pun?) down American quilt artist (and now Met Gala garment-maker) Zak Foster!!! We’re jumping with joy to announce Zak's first class with CraftyMonkies. It’s been a wee while coming but, believe us, it will be so worth the wait! Not only will you learn some wonderful traditional hand-sewing techniques (as Zak describes below) but this class will also provide you with a wonderful opportunity to connect with this international artist in a really intimate and immersive space.

In this magical workshop Zak will take you on a personal creative journey as you make your ‘one of a kind’ Talisman Tiny Quilt. This class is slightly different to our other classes as we will offer you not only the chance to work and sew alongside Zak, but you'll really get to know him as an artist and learn the story behind his processes: you'll get to ask questions about his approach, the journey that got him to where he is today and gain an insight into his magical world. A truly unique three-hour experience to both savour and delight in here with CraftyMonkies!

Introduction by Zak:-

How do we harness the power of fabric to make manifest our intentions? Great question!

In this workshop, we'll cover classic hand-sewing techniques like the running stitch, back stitch, and tailors knot. Perfect for all skill levels, we will make a small hand-sized quilt from start to finish that will teach you many of the hand-sewing skills you can use in larger quilting projects. Participants are encouraged to bring at least one item of what I like to call 'magical power'!...

Julia Wallet!

We're really excited to be hosting this Julia Wallet workshop with the warm, wonderful & hugely talented US crafter Jennie Pickett from Clover & Violet! This class will see participants make this fabulous, multi-purpose wallet which can be put to so many uses - and, with the right fabric choice, makes a perfect festive gift!...

Introduction by Jennie:-

I cannot bear to get rid of scraps, so I’m always looking for a great, scrap-busting project and the Julia Wallet is one of my favourites! This little wallet uses scraps 10” square and smaller and is a great afternoon project that makes the perfect gift too. The wallet comes in two sizes and features a closure (use a magnet, Velcro or snap!), card pockets, bill pocket, and a zipper coin pocket on the back.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop will teach you how to make your own Julia Wallet, which includes using your scraps, card pockets, magnetic closure (or another closure of your choice), and a zipper coin purse. You’ll learn how to make the wallet as minimally bulky as possible so there’s room for everything you want to carry and not a lot of excess fabric. We will be making the large wallet in class, but the pattern gives options for both sizes.
