Online Interactive Workshop - Foundation Paper Piecing with Freezer Paper
Our popular sew-it-all tutor, Charlotte Newland combines the Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) technique with freezer paper so that you can have all the FPP advantages of accuracy and consistency, without the downsides of sewing through paper, printing lots of templates, or having to pick out bits of paper when you tear the template away. With freezer paper you’ll be able to reuse your templates many times. Freezer paper is a versatile paper used in many crafts. It has a matt side and a shiny side, the shiny side sticks to fabric when you iron it and is easily removed leaving no residue.
Charlotte will start the class with an easy Economy Square pattern and show you how the freezer paper technique works with Foundation Paper Piecing. Then, she’ll move on to the Goosing Around FPP pattern by Kelly Liddle of Jeli Quilts (included with the class fee) and you’ll be able to sew along, create wonderfully sharp points and concentrate on choosing fabric colours for your radiating triangles! The finished block makes a great cushion or wall hanging, or you could make multiples for a quilt. In the UK, check out eBay and Amazon for sheets of freezer paper. Also available as a roll (Reynolds Freezer Paper) from online quilt shops. USA sewers/sewists, you are likely to have this already!
For this Online Interactive Workshop, you will need the following:-
-
Freezer Paper sheets or roll
-
Pencil
-
Ruler
-
Paper cutting scissors
-
Rotary cutter
-
Iron
-

Online Interactive Workshop - Jelly Roll Stars Quilt
This is a really fun quilt to make using your Jelly Roll and some background fabric and is a perfect class for beginners!
This simple quilt is created using 2 blocks – a star and a bordered square. Once you have learnt the method for both blocks you can make your quilt any size you like – just add fabric. You won’t get the quilt done in one class, but you can at least make a start! You will be given full instructions by tutor Sarah Payne after the class so you can complete the project at your leisure!
This example finishes less than 1m square – depending on the borders you add.
Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop are as follows:-
-
This quilt uses a jelly roll – but not a whole one. This size uses 16 strips. If you don’t have a jelly roll simply cut 32 strips from a selection of fat 1/4s measuring 2 ½ inches wide.
-
1 m of white on white fabric (this includes an allowance for the binding)
-
Threads for piecing
Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop are as follows:-
-
Sewing machine in good working order with manual and all feet, bobbins and a new needle
-
Rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat
-
It is useful to have an easy angle (right angel or Half Square triangle) ruler and a square ruler. You can make the quilt without these rulers but your quilt will be slightly smaller.
-
Pre-cut – if you do not have a jelly roll then please cut 2 ½ inch wide strips from a selection of fat 1/4s.

Online Interactive Workshop - Raggy Quilt
This easy pattern is a great example of a textured quilt. Using 5 inch squares you can make this fun project with fuzzy edges that only gets better the more you wash it! Taught by Sarah Payne, this is a fabulous quilt-as-you-go project which you can continue adding to until it reaches the size you want. The sample we'll be working on is 27 inches square. It is so simple to make that we don’t even need to bind it!
Requirements for this online interactive workshop are as follows:-
-
A selection of fat 1/4s.
-
Walking foot
-
Quilt marking pen (wash away or air erasable) or quilting tape for marking quilt lines.
Pre-cutting before this online interactive workshop:-
For each block you will need a 5 inch square of the front fabric, a five inch square of the backing and a 4 ½ inch square of wadding. This pattern works especially well as a double-sided quilt, so think of this when you cut your squares. This sample is 6 x 6 blocks so you would need 72 squares of fabric and 36 squares of wadding. However, you do not need to cut all of these in one go – just enough to get you going during the class!
Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis!

Online Interactive Workshop - Waggle Tail Hound Appliqué
We're really excited to be hosting our first workshop with the wonderfully charismatic & hugely talented Gary Mills. A sewist since he was a young lad, Gary's enthusiasm & passion for his craft really shines through and we're sure he'll prove to be a huge hit with our crafting audience!
Introducing ‘Waggle Tails’, the most adorable Hound Appliqué, in Gary's three-hour workshop. This course is very much a ‘skills bomb’ of processes for you to learn. Tailored for the beginner in the art of firstly transferring the image, then how to use transfer adhesive for appliqué with free motion embroidery, it is a great start to get to grips with these addictive skilled processes; you will even learn some hand-tinting with colour to finish off your outcome! This class is full of little cheats and 'how-to' tips to get the best results from both yourself and your sewing-machine.
The outcome could be framed, would make a great panel for a quilt or even a cushion centre - Gary will discuss with you any ideas that come up through this workshop!...
The following items are required for this online interactive workshop:-
-
Base fabric: Cream / White cotton canvas or heavy calico, or heavy linen minimum size 21cm x 30cm, although you can work on a larger piece if you prefer. Pressed
-
Stitch and tear 21cm x 30cm
-
Bonda web or similar for bonding applique pieces 25cm x 50cm
-
Selection of small pieces of suitably chosen fabrics (light wools and tweeds, printed and the plain cottons such as white & black especially for muzzles and noses)
-
A palate of water colour paints (a children’s set will do) and a small brush for tinting your final image, small pot of water. A soluble fabric marker pen is useful.

Online Interactive Workshop: Manx Patchwork + Quilt-As-You-Go
Join Sarah Payne to learn to make a gorgeous Manx Patchwork + Quilt-As-You-Go Table Runner.
In the morning we will be working on Manx Patchwork quilt blocks. You should complete more than one block in the class so prepare 2 – 3 blocks. Requirements for this online interactive workshop are as follows:-
-
Plain fabric – 10-inch square per block. Calico is a good option because it is cheap and will never be seen.
-
Wadding and backing fabric – 10-inch square per block.
-
Fabric for binding – the amount is dependent on how many blocks you wish to make. 2 blocks will need less than a fat ¼ of fabric. Do not pre-cut.
-
Sewing machine with a standard sewing machine foot and a walking foot.
-
Ruler, rotary cutter and mat.
Fabric choices for this online interactive workshop are as follows:-
-
You can be scrappy or simply use two fabrics for your block. However, you do need a contrast and the best way to ensure that is to separate your fabrics into light and dark ones.
Pre-cutting ahead of this online interactive workshop - in order to make a couple of blocks for the afternoon class, please pre-cut your fabric strips. For one block you will need:-
-
A total of eight strips from your fat 1/4s measuring 2 inches wide. Cut the strips from selvedge to selvedge (along the long edge) so you should end up with a pile of strips measuring about 20inches by 2 inches. You can also use shorter strips from your stash if you have any as long. You will need a selection of light and dark so cut 4 from the light pile and 4 from the dark.
-
You will need at least two sets of the above.
In the afternoon we will continue making a few more blocks and then will put them together using the Quilt-As-You-Go technique. Once everyone has at least two blocks completed we will discuss quilting for both options, and then use the same technique to make the table runner!
Tickets for this Online Interactive Course (via the Zoom platform) will be limited & available on a first-come/first-served basis.
