Sarah Payne - Friday 24 July 2020 - 6.00pm to 9.00pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop - Raggy Quilt

This easy pattern is a great example of a textured quilt. Using 5 inch squares you can make this fun project with fuzzy edges that only gets better the more you wash it! Taught by Sarah Payne, this is a fabulous quilt-as-you-go project which you can continue adding to until it reaches the size you want. The sample we'll be working on is 27 inches square. It is so simple to make that we don’t even need to bind it!

Requirements for this online interactive workshop are as follows:-

  • A selection of fat 1/4s.

  • Walking foot

  • Quilt marking pen (wash away or air erasable) or quilting tape for marking quilt lines.

Pre-cutting before this online interactive workshop:-

For each block you will need a 5 inch square of the front fabric, a five inch square of the backing and a 4 ½ inch square of wadding. This pattern works especially well as a double-sided quilt, so think of this when you cut your squares. This sample is 6 x 6 blocks so you would need 72 squares of fabric and 36 squares of wadding. However, you do not need to cut all of these in one go – just enough to get you going during the class!

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis!

Sarah Payne - Saturday 25 July 2020 - 10.00am to 1.00pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop - Seminole Patchwork Wall-Hanging

There are many quilt traditions around the world and this is a fabulous one to learn! The Native American Seminole tribe from Florida developed a wonderful patchwork style of piecing in strips, now known as Seminole Patchwork. Join Sarah Payne as she demonstrates how this easy technique can allow you to create unique borders for your work – or a standalone wall-hanging. This class is suitable for all levels.

You will have a go at one or two of the patterns, but Sarah will demonstrate all the layouts shown in the wall hanging. You will be supplied with full-colour written instructions after the class to continue making all the border designs, plus create a few new ones! Once you learn this technique you will be eager to try your own versions!

Requirements to make all the border rows:-

  • 4 fat 1/4s and ½ m of contrast colour (in this case white)

Preparation ahead of this online interactive workshop:-

Please give your fabrics a good press before the class.

For the first demo we will be making the first row in the images (supplied once you've booked online) so you will need to cut the equivalent of Sarah's blue, pink and white, so please substitute your own fabrics and cut:-

  • One 2 ½ inch wide strip of pink

  • Two 2 ½ inch wide strips of blue

  • Three 3-inch-wide strips of white

Gary Mills - Friday 31 July 2020 - 6.00pm to 9.00pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop - Waggle Tail Hound Appliqué

We're really excited to be hosting our first workshop with the wonderfully charismatic & hugely talented Gary Mills. A sewist since he was a young lad, Gary's enthusiasm & passion for his craft really shines through and we're sure he'll prove to be a huge hit with our crafting audience!

Introducing ‘Waggle Tails’, the most adorable Hound Appliqué, in Gary's three-hour workshop. This course is very much a ‘skills bomb’ of processes for you to learn. Tailored for the beginner in the art of firstly transferring the image, then how to use transfer adhesive for appliqué with free motion embroidery, it is a great start to get to grips with these addictive skilled processes; you will even learn some hand-tinting with colour to finish off your outcome! This class is full of little cheats and 'how-to' tips to get the best results from both yourself and your sewing-machine.

The outcome could be framed, would make a great panel for a quilt or even a cushion centre - Gary will discuss with you any ideas that come up through this workshop!...

The following items are required for this online interactive workshop:-

  • Base fabric: Cream / White cotton canvas or heavy calico, or heavy linen minimum size 21cm x 30cm, although you can work on a larger piece if you prefer. Pressed

  • Stitch and tear 21cm x 30cm

  • Bonda web or similar for bonding applique pieces 25cm x 50cm

  • Selection of small pieces of suitably chosen fabrics (light wools and tweeds, printed and the plain cottons such as white & black especially for muzzles and noses)

  • A palate of water colour paints (a children’s set will do) and a small brush for tinting your final image, small pot of water. A soluble fabric marker pen is useful.

  • 1x sheet A4 tracing paper, soft pencil B1-2 and biro to transfer image, sticky tape

  • Sewing-machine with an embroidery or darning foot attachment. An iron, sheet of baking parchment for pressing, scissors, pins, polyester dark machine thread.

Online Interactive Workshop: Manx Patchwork + Quilt-As-You-Go

Join Sarah Payne to learn to make a gorgeous Manx Patchwork + Quilt-As-You-Go Table Runner.

In the morning we will be working on Manx Patchwork quilt blocks. You should complete more than one block in the class so prepare 2 – 3 blocks. Requirements for this online interactive workshop are as follows:-

  • Plain fabric – 10-inch square per block. Calico is a good option because it is cheap and will never be seen.

  • Wadding and backing fabric – 10-inch square per block.

  • Fabric for binding – the amount is dependent on how many blocks you wish to make. 2 blocks will need less than a fat ¼ of fabric. Do not pre-cut.

  • Sewing machine with a standard sewing machine foot and a walking foot.

  • Ruler, rotary cutter and mat.

Fabric choices for this online interactive workshop are as follows:-

  • You can be scrappy or simply use two fabrics for your block. However, you do need a contrast and the best way to ensure that is to separate your fabrics into light and dark ones.

Pre-cutting ahead of this online interactive workshop will allow you to make a couple of blocks for this class. For each block you will need:-

  • A total of eight strips from your fat 1/4s measuring 2 inches wide. Cut the strips from selvedge to selvedge (along the long edge) so you should end up with a pile of strips measuring about 20inches by 2 inches. You can also use shorter strips from your stash if you have any. You will need a selection of light and dark so cut 4 from the light pile and 4 from the dark. You can also save time in the class by folding the strips in half lengthwise with the right side of the fabric facing out and press. This will give you a pile of folded strips 1 inch wide.

  • You will need at least two sets of the above.

In the afternoon we will continue making a few more blocks and then will put them together using the Quilt-As-You-Go technique. Once everyone has at least two blocks completed we will discuss quilting, and then start to construct the table runner! You can of course choose to stick with one block and make a cushion – the choice is yours!

Tickets for this Online Interactive Course (via the Zoom platform) will be limited & available on a first-come/first-served basis.

Nicholas Ball - Wednesday 05 August 2020 - 6.00pm-9.00pm  (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop: Improvised Quilting

We're absolutely delighted that Nicholas Ball has agreed to join the CraftyMonkies and have no doubt that you'll absolutely love his Improvised Quilting workshop!

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide:-

For the basic triangles, large scraps of solid and print fabric in square-ish and rectangle-ish pieces work well for the background, whilst smaller scraps are perfect for the triangles. Feel free to cut your pieces from yardage. The background pieces shouldn’t be smaller than approximately 4” for your first attempt at this technique.

For the insert triangles, the same sized background pieces as the basic triangles can be used. For the triangles, strips of approximately 1.5” - 2.5”. These need not be full width of fabric, so feel free to use what you have.

Finally, for the stacked triangles, an assortment of squares and triangles, anything from 5” to as large as you want! As the name suggests, we will be cutting through stacks of fabric, so as long as your prices are all roughly the same size, anything will work. A layer cake or charm pack would be perfect.

Please don’t stress about these requirements! They are simply a guide and Nicholas has yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using these techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with Nicholas. They also needn’t be perfectly square or straight, so feel free to use scissors!

This is a technique-based workshop. We will be exploring triangles and won’t have a finished project in mind. Feel free to make as many or as few of the units as you like. You can combine them into a sampler or continue to work on the project after the workshop by adding more units to it. Don’t feel any pressure to cut up all your precious fabric!!!

For this Online Interactive Workshop you will also need -

  • Sewing-machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (Nicholas recommends Aurifil)

  • Rotary cutter - with a new blade

  • Cutting mat

  • Patchwork ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric scissors

  • Most important of all - a willingness to explore your own creativity! It's going to be FUN!!!...

Welcome aboard the good ship CraftyMonkies to one of our most versatile & talented crafters, Kerry Green!

Make a stack of foundation paper-pieced mug rugs with Kerry’s first class for CraftyMonkies. Whether you are new to Foundation Paper-Piecing or have already tried this method, there’s so much to learn in this small project. Kerry will guide you through FPP techniques so you’ll have accurate seam points & super-sharp seam lines, as well as teaching you how to machine and hand finish a super-neat single-fold binding with easy mitred corners to ‘frame’ your project so it’s ready for a mug of your favourite hot drink!  Pattern templates are included in the class fee.

  • (Mug rug finished size 6 3/4” x 8 1/2”)

In this class you will sew more than one of each mug and at least one word, TEA or HOT! The aim is to have a finished mug-rug top ready to quilt and bind!

For this online interactive workshop you will need:-

  • Fat quarter of background fabric.  Plain fabric that is identical on each side is easiest to work with and uses less fabric.  If you want to use a print, choose something small and multidirectional.

  • 4 1/2” x 6” rectangle in light colour fabric rectangle for mug in for stripe mug

  • 4 1/2” x 6” rectangle dark colour for stripe mug

  • 4 1/2” x 5 1/2 for plain mug

  • 4” x 4” fabric scrap for each mug handle

  • 1 1/2” by 22” rectangle and 1 1/2” x 12”rectangle fabric for TEA

  • 1 1/2” by 22” rectangle and 1 1/2” x 12”rectangle fabric for HOT!

  • Sewing machine with a machine foot with a gap which gives you a good view of your stitches - this could be the standard foot on your machine, or a clear foot, or quarter inch foot, it depends on your machine.

  • See machine feet photo (below, left)

  • Fabric glue stick (eg Sewline). You could also use a Pritt stick style glue stick.

  • A postcard

  • Rotary cutter

  • Add-a-quarter-ruler (optional) or small standard quilt ruler

  • Iron

  • Seam roller or finger press (optional but handy!)

  • Pins

  • Two Templates of your choice printed 100% on to lightweight printer paper or Foundation Paper Piecing Paper,  the plain mug is the easiest option, although the stripe mug is straightforward too. TEA is the easiest word option.  When printed, each template measures 4 1/4” x 8 3/8” around the solid outer edge.

  • 8” x 10” quilt wadding

Janet Clare - Wednesday 12 August 2020 - 6.00pm-9.00pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop: 'The Wordsmith' - Quilting Memories To Treasure

The lovely Janet Clare has often wished she'd kept a diary or an art journal but after many attempts had to admit that she was just not that sort. And yet, she still really wanted to remember and record our ordinary days. After all, what you do every day is more important than what you do once in a blue moon!

One day Janet realised that she could simply stitch her stories and so here we are: a 'Wordsmith' Memory Quilt workshop! This workshop is about noticing and cherishing the simple things in life. It’s about love letters, little notes and finding pressed flowers in favourite books.

So, gather your memories and slowly piece them together with beautiful fabrics to create a lasting cloth to be treasured by generations to come!

The structure of this online interactive workshop is as follows:-

During our time together, Janet will tell you the inspiration behind her work and share some of the stories in her memory quilt, hopefully inspiring you to start creating one of your own. Every 'wordsmith' needs an alphabet or two! During this workshop we will focus on ways to transfer lettering and text to fabric and methods to stitch them such as free motion stitching, appliqué and embroidery. We will also practise Janet's ‘Quilt-As-You-Go’ method.

You will see how Janet layers techniques such as fusible appliqué, free-motion stitching, hand quilting, embroidery and quilt-as-you-go so you can begin to create unique pieces inspired by your favourite words, sayings, adages, poems or stories.

For this online interactive workshop you will need the following:-

  • A place to start - a favourite word, quote, adage or short story

  • Print out the worksheet (supplied upon signing-up for the course)

  • Sewing machine, set up for free-motion quilting (darning foot and feed dogs down)

  • A selection of sewing threads (preferably polyester for machine drawing)

  • Basic sewing kit

  • Embroidery thread

  • Free motion practice- calico and wadding pieces A4ish

  • Fusible web

  • Pencil and paper

  • Carbon paper (if you have it - you can just watch the short demo if not)

  • Stitch ‘n’ tear (if you have it - you can just watch the short demo if not)

  • Washable/removable fabric marker

  • ‘Quilt as you go’ - four x 9 inch fabric squares, two x 8 inch wadding squares

Tickets for this Online Interactive Course (via the Zoom platform) will be limited & available on a first-come/first-served basis.

Gary Mills - Friday 14 August 2020 - 6.00pm-9.00pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop: Lounge Pants For All

Since we're all tending to spend a tad more time at home these days, it has become so popular dressing in Lounge Pants for just chilling around the house or going to exercise class. Let's face it: “Lounge pants are the new pyjamas!!!”

Just by taking some simple body measurements you will learn how to draft your very own easy to wear lounge pants. With some simple math calculation, you can create your pattern to fit from tint tots to adults. Ability level is perfect for the beginner who would like to have a go at sewing a simple to garment and the lovely Gary Mills will lead you every step of the way!

In this online interactive workshop we will cover the following:-

  • No pattern to download (none of that sticking together pages of printouts)

  • Draft directly onto your fabric

  • Size your trousers to fit any size from teeny weeny to adults

  • Simple construction skills using a sewing machine

Skills covered in this online interactive workshop include:-

  • Taking measurements

  • Making simple calculations

  • Drafting a simple pattern with fabric maker or chalk

  • Cutting out

  • Construction and pressing (including straight and curved seams, finishing and hems and elasticated waistband)

Fabric requirements for this project - for an Adult size:-

Note on Fabric:-

Suitable fabrics would be a woven printed or plain cotton or Polyester cotton. You can also use brushed cotton (DO NOT choose a knitted or a stretch fabric for this project)! If you wish to choose a printed pattern fabric, preferably this should be a multi-directional print rather than something that has to be pattern-matched when cutting and constructing. Choose something bright, bold, and fun!

Amount of fabric required for this online interactive workshop:-

Fabric widths come in varying sizes, but you will need a width which is wide enough to go around your hips (allowing for gathering, ease and seam allowance) which is then folded lengthwise to draft your pattern in two halves. The length will be the required length of the trouser leg plus waist band plus the hem.

To calculate your fabric, use this calculation:-

  • For width - Full hip measurement + 1” total seam allowance / 4 x 5.5 = Width of fabric required

  • For Length - Measurement from waist to finish of trouser + 4” waist band + 2” Hem = Total length

  • Example:-

  • Hip 42” + 1” / 4 x 5.5 = 59.125” wide (so 60” wide fabric is enough)

  • For the Length (waist to floor measurement) 41” + 4” + 2” = 47” length required

If the width of the fabric is too narrow to be folded lengthwise then buy double the length which then can be folded widthways and still accommodate the width of the hips plus the required length.

Haberdashery required for this online interactive workshop:-

Good quality sew all machine thread to match your fabric, 1¼” wide elastic by the width of the waist, decorative 2” wide satin ribbon  40” in length.

Equipment required for this online interactive workshop:-

  • Somewhere to draft your pattern and cut out, such as a table, pasting decorating table or long worksurface - it is not ideal to draft and cut your pattern on the floor!...

  • Sewing machine with simple straight stitch used, fabric shears (rather than cutting blade)

  • Pins

  • Small snips

  • Tape measure, something to draw directly onto fabric (fabric-maker or chalk) a yard stick / long metre rule or a long piece of narrow wooden batten to draw long lines against

  • Optional - A pattern-square or quilters-square may be useful but not essential

  • Pen and paper to make notes!

Tickets for this Online Interactive Course (via the Zoom platform) will be limited & available on a first-come/first-served basis.

Sarah Payne - Saturday 15 August 2020 - 10.00am-1.00pm + 2.30pm - 5.30pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop: Rose Quilt

As the lovely Sarah Payne will illustrate, 'Foundation Piecing' using paper takes all the hassle out of cutting and sewing your quilt block! You can even use oddly shaped pieces of fabric scraps without extra cutting, which makes it the ideal technique for using up all those little oddments left over from previous projects. It is so easy to sew with precision that it is virtually 'quilting by numbers'.

This quilt is foundation pieced onto paper. You will be sent a copy of the template prior to the class, which you will want to print out 3 or 4 times for the workshop. You will need to photocopy the supplied template 12 times for the whole quilt but you won’t get that far in this workshop. Don’t worry – you will have full instructions after the class! When printing the temple, use the thinnest/lightest weight paper that will work with your copier for ease in removal. You will need to tape two pieces together to get the 10 inch block.

If you have never done Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) before, do not panic. We will be creating a small warmup block which you will also be sent before the class. This quilt works well with a selection of fabrics giving a lovely scrappy look. Therefore, you can make use of bits of jelly roll or bits of fat quarters you have lying around. However, the following requirements list assumes that you will have a total amount of fabric as stated below.

For this online interactive Rose Block workshop you will need the following to create 12 roses:-

  • A fat quarter of the yellow fabric for the centre of the rose.

  • A total of 2 metres in a selection of pinks, purples and reds (or mix it up and go gothic with reds and black – the choice is yours). This could be a mixture of 8 fat quarters or 4 half metres depending on how scrappy you want the result to look.

  • A total of 1 ½ metres in a selection of greens. This could be a mixture of 6 fat quarters.

  • Sashing requires 80cm of the green and 10cm of the pink.

  • Sewing machine in good working order, feet, power supply, manual and new needles.

  • Rotary cuter, long ruler and mat (a shorter ruler of about 12 inches long and a square ruler measuring at least 10 ½ inches square can also be useful if you have them).

Optional borders – the borders on this quilt requires 25cm of the pink border fabric and 75cm of the red outer border fabric (see photo). You should complete the quilt top before cutting the borders.

This class is suitable for all levels and is ideal for a confident beginner who fancies trying something different. Sarah will assume no previous knowledge of FPP before the class and there will be a warm up exercise before we start on the main block.

No pre-cutting required but you will need to print out the templates that will be emailed to you just before the class.

Sarah Payne - Monday 17 August 2020 - 2.00pm - 6.00pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop: Accurate Cutting Techniques

One of the basic skills that any new sewer needs to master at the beginning of their journey is accurate cutting, and many find this the most difficult step. Many of us are self-taught and we have tended to pick up bad habits so now is the time to get it right. In this class Sarah Payne will talk you through various tools and what they are used for, how to cut safely and how to cut things that are bigger than your ruler. You will also see how to make the most of the rulers you have, as well as take a look at a few you may never have used before. You will have lots of chances to cut, and Sarah will supply you with a pattern for a simple bag that you can make after the class with some of your scraps.

This is a workshop where you will be practicing your cutting!

For this online interactive workshop you will require the following:-

  • Rotary Cutter (with a nice sharp blade), long ruler and cutting mat.

  • Square rulers in various sizes – whatever you have in your collection.

  • This is an opportunity to learn how to cut with other shapes – i.e. hexagons, triangles, diamonds – so bring them along!

  • A selection of fabrics – you will be cutting many pieces, and so will need to bring a selection of fat ¼ and ½ metre pieces, as well as scraps. It is a good idea to bring pieces that go together so that you can use them for future projects.

  • You can make a bag from the pieces that you have cut.

  • You will need ½ metre of fabric for the lining of the bag.

  • ½ metre of medium or heavy weight iron on interface or wadding.

  • Clean sewing-machine with manual, accessories and foot pedal. A Walking Foot will be useful to make the bag.

  • No pre-cutting required

Tickets for this Online Interactive Course (via the Zoom platform) will be limited & available on a first-come/first-served basis.
