Nicholas Ball - Tuesday 19 January 2021 - 6.00pm to 9.00pm (GMT)

Online Interactive Workshop - Improv Quilting Shoal Sewalong

Following on from his hugely successful #improvtrianglesewalong, broadcast via Instagram in early 2020, the marvellous Nicholas Ball has teamed up with CraftyMonkies to deliver an Improv Quilting Shoal Sewalong workshop which will complement Nicholas' next sewalong, namely the: #shoalsewalong which will be airing via his Instagram channel (@quiltsfromtheattic) from early January 2021 - needless to say, we're all absolutely delighted at this collaboration!

Introduction by Nicholas:-

Since the #improvtrianglesewalong I hosted in early 2020, countless people have asked when the next one would be.

The Shoal quilt from my 2019 book Inspiring Improv (published by Lucky Spool) remains one of the most popular projects and I’ve seen some awesome versions, made in all manner of fabrics. When it came to deciding upon the theme for a second Sewalong, it was a no-brainer! I’m so excited to host the #shoalsewalong in January and banish what can often be the 'dreary grey' of the New Year with colourful fabric fish. I’m thrilled to offer this special CraftyMonkies workshop alongside the Sewalong, timed perfectly to give you all the hints and tips you need to sew your improv shoal!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

During the workshop, you take the fabric you have chosen during week one of the Sewalong and learn how to sew the fish units. I will expand upon the instructions given in both my book and the Sewalong. I’ll start by showing you the basics of my triangle and freehand curve techniques, before combining them to create unique and varied fish units. As a bonus, I’ll share how to add even more individuality to your fish, with extra fins, gills and patterned bodies. They’ll even be some seaweed!  After making the units, you’ll learn my top tips for joining them together using my jigsaw method, getting a heads-up before that part of the Sewalong. Plus, I’ll be on hand to answer any questions you may have about quilting and finishing your #shoalsewalong quilt top.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels. The triangle technique is a great introduction to sewing in a more liberated way and is sure to fuel your creativity The freehand curves will provide the beginner with a firm foundation to cutting without rulers, upon which they can expand the technique. More experienced sewers can challenge themselves with more daring curves and different shaped fish.

Material Requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for either the workshop of the Sewalong, my book Inspiring Improv (published in 2019 by Lucky Spool, available to buy via Amazon) will expand upon the techniques learnt and provide many more improv tips and tricks. My original Shoal quilt is also one of the 12 projects.

Fabric Requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide. There will be lots more information about choosing fabrics for the Sewalong when it starts in January, with videos and Instagram posts. For those of you that like to plan ahead, use the following as a guide.

FOR THE FISH - an assortment of large scraps in your chosen colours. This fabric will be used for the fish bodies and tails, so a healthy assortment of different sized rectangles and squares will work best.

FOR THE BACKGROUND - an assortment of large scraps in your chosen sea/water colours. This can either be one fabric, for a more cohesive look, or a variety for a scrappy version.

Additional scraps from your stash in coordinating colours for gills, fins and seaweed.

The more fish you make, the bigger the quilt will be. There is no right or wrong size. Remember, this is your Sewalong quilt, so make it how you want to!

Please don’t stress about any of these requirements! They are simply a GUIDE and I’ve yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me. As mentioned, they don’t need to be perfectly square, so feel free to use scissors!

This is a technique-based workshop. We will be making fish units which you will then piece into your finished #shoalsewalong quilt in your own time. Feel free to make as many or as few of the fish units as you like. Don’t feel any pressure to cut up all your precious fabric!

Equipment Requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A sewing machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

  • Rotary cutter with a new blade (especially important for the curve technique)

  • Cutting mat

  • Patchwork ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric scissors

  • A willingness to explore your own creativity

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Nicholas is truly so excited to offer this workshop as an add-on to his 2021 #shoalsewalong. He says it’s a great way to sew with like-minded people, inspire one another and see how all the fabric fish are progressing! As a thank you for booking, you’ll be offered a Discount Code which you can use to purchase one of the fabric bundles Nicholas has curated in collaboration with Crimson Tate in the USA.

Have a great festive season - we look forward to you joining us in the New Year!

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

Janet Clare - Friday 22 January 2021 - 6.00pm to 9.00pm (GMT)

Online Interactive Workshop - Delectable Mountain Blocks

We're delighted to welcome back the lovely & hugely talented Janet Clare for her first CraftyMonkies class of the New Year! On this workshop, you get to grips with an excellent technique which Janet has entitled: Delectable Mountain Blocks!

Introduction by Janet:-

A few years ago my eldest son Joe asked me to make him a quilt. This was music to my ears until he began explaining what he did and didn’t want - NO flowers, NO detailed blocks, NOTHING pretty, NO pictures (appliqué) and NO fabric prints with recognisable things on them!?! Long story short (and many conversations over quilt books later!) he eventually allowed me to make him a zig-zag quilt and the agreed upon Delectable Mountain block was interesting and fun for me to make whilst still meeting my client's exacting criteria! The finished zig-zag quilt is now at university with him which as every quilter knows is pretty much the ultimate compliment.

I have re-visited the Delectable Mountain block a few times since then. You can see examples of my ‘Up Hill, Down Dale’ quilt which was designed for use with 10 inch layer cakes. Or my ‘Rhythm’ quilt which uses a very tight colour palette.

Join me on Friday 22nd January (6.00-9.00pm, GMT) and learn how to create fun and lively ‘Delectable Mountain’ blocks! Use scraps or a tight colour palette to make your delectable mountain blocks and then you can arrange them in a zig-zag or diamond shapes to create your own unique quilt!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

During the workshop we will cover making half square triangles, sub-dividing half square triangles into the mountain strips and strip management!

Stitching the mountain strips together and finally designing your own block layout. Delectable Mountain blocks are super versatile and interesting to make!

We’ll be stitching together in real time and sharing what we’re creating as we go along.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Confident beginner - you need to be comfortable with your sewing-machine and rotary-cutting fabrics.

Material/Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Eight x ‘pale’ 7 inch squares

  • Eight x ‘dark’ 7 inch squares

Any colours or prints will do just fine but you need to create pairs of squares with contrast. The fabric requirements above are sufficient for our evening together but obviously are not enough to create a quilt (you can crack on with that task after the class, using the skills you will have learned!).

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing machine with a quarter inch sewing foot

  • Rotary cutter and mat

  • Ruler for cutting strips and trimming half square triangles

  • Iron and ironing board

  • 8 bags/ wallets for storing your strips in, you need to be able to number them (I use freezer bags)

  • Pencil and paper for note taking. You don’t need a pattern for this workshop but you will want to take notes.

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

No pattern is required for this workshop!

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

The £25.00 ticket for this class, is based on ONE person attending this Online Interactive Workshop.

CraftyMonkies Sarah Payne Online Interactive Zoom Workshop Crazy Patchwork Memory Heart

Sarah Payne - Saturday 23 January 2021 - 4.00pm to 7.00pm (GMT)

Online Interactive Workshop - Crazy Patchwork Memory Heart

It's great to welcome Sarah Payne back for 2021 and in this class you get to exercise your hand-sewing skills via her fabulous Crazy Patchwork Memory Heart workshop!

Introduction by Sarah:-

Crazy patchwork was popular in Victorian times when 'well-bred' ladies would piece together random fabrics and then embroider over them. This technique has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years as we appreciate slow-sewing and the importance of re-using and recycling supplies. You can make this into a Memory Heart by making use of scraps of fabric that have personal memories for you. You can keep it simple with your stitches or go full embroidery diva and cover every available space!

So learn a little crazy patchwork and make a romantic heart at the same time. It can be used as a large pin cushion or a small cushion. Add a ribbon and hang it from your wardrobe door or include a scent and pop it in you knicker drawer! How you use it is up to you.

You do not need any specialist equipment or fancy fabrics – simply bash that stash. You just need a pile of pretty fabrics and some threads to have fun. An A4 sized piece of calico will do as a backing fabric. You can mix velvets, silks, cottons, buttons, and lace if you like – there are no rules. You can make your piece into a heart cushion or work it as a square piece. Sarah will show you several different hand stitches that you can use to embellish your piece.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You will learn how to cut and layer your pieces, how to tack them down and then how to embellish them. Sarah will talk through a variety of different hand stitches that you can try, as well as the use of buttons, beads, ribbon, and lace to embellish your piece. You will also receive a template to create your heart if that is what you choose to do.

This is a hand sewn project so you will be unlikely to finish it in the class, but Sarah will give you details of how to turn your piece into a heart cushion (template supplied).

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

No experience of any kind is needed – jut as long as you can thread a needle!

Material/Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Scraps of fabrics – any size and shape will work. You can use leftovers from other projects or recycle pieces that have personal meaning for you.

  • A4 piece of scrap calico for the heart foundation.

  • A4 piece of fabric for the back of your heart.

  • Embroidery threads – stranded cotton is the best choice.

  • Any embellishments you fancy using including buttons, beads, lace and ribbon.

  • Toy stuffing.

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Selection of needles & thread!

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

A Heart template will be supplied once you have signed up for this course

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

The lovely Lucy Brennan joins us once again to deliver a really great project that, once made, will be the envy of all your crafting chums - unless of course you make one for them too! Introducing Lucy's Stitchy-Pie Needle Case, workshop!...

Introduction by Lucy:-

This is my perfect needle case! It is a nice size and folds up so you can easily store it; the construction and snap fastener make your needles secure so they won't fall out; the arrangement means you are less likely to get pricked by the needles and the whole thing looks adorable.

Stitchy-Pie is completely customisable and I will share ideas to make it totally unique. Once you have made one or two for yourself, you can make some for your friends - a Stitchy Pie case is the perfect extra item to include for online swaps - and purchasing the pattern then allows you to make them to sell on a small, handmade scale.

Key Features:-

  • Arrange your hand sewing or machine needles according to type, with defined sections you can quickly find your favourite needles!

  • Compact case folds up neatly

  • Safely store your needles and avoid pricks

  • Felt pockets allow you to keep clips handy or store small notions

  • Snap closure

The wonderful Gary Mills steps into the spotlight once again and teaches you all about Visible Mending, a fantastic method which helps you revive or rescue bygone loved garments & give them an excitingly fresh lease of life!...

Introduction by Gary:-

It used to be called 'Invisible Mending', but today the new “make do and mend” trend is truly visible, which can be seen, stand out and enhance the look of the garment. The finished outcome gives a once pre-loved every day manufactured piece of clothing a unique, home-spun, hand worked new lease of life, which will make you love all over again!

What makes this workshop so neat, is that you do not need any special equipment, no expensive materials and you do not even necessarily need clothes in need of repair as you can re-imagine or pretend where a repair is required and get to work on creating this customised look. Once you get hooked on playing and experimenting with visible repairs it is the take anywhere craft-stitch project; get creative in your armchair, take it on a journey or sit on your porch; you do not need workspace to achieve these outcomes.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Experienced and talented tutor Gary Mills, with his background in fashion design, imparts his knowledge on how to create a balanced and a visually enhanced look to your repairs.

During this 3-hour workshop he will cover, stabilising a hole in a garment for repair, patching from behind and patching on top; using turned or raw edges, a simple yet effective darning technique, decorative Boro stitching to use for strengthening the repair but also for decoration and a small portfolio of hand stitches that you can draw upon to enhance and decorate a garment. Gary has chosen a knitted jumper, a cotton jersey t shirt, a woven cotton shirt and cotton drill trousers to visibly repair in his examples.

Your outcome for this workshop can be examples on all 4 types of garments or you may wish to just concentrate upon and choose one woven and one knitted garment.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The skill level for this project would suit all, from the beginner who would like to learn with simple, clear, achievable instruction, to those who are more experienced who will quickly grasp the process and perhaps wish for more guidance in design choices which Gary can advise upon.

You need suitable garments or clothes.

Note: These do not necessarily have to need repair as you can use this process on new garment also.

It is suggested that you have a knitted garment (exampled for darning jumper or similar not too fine a knit) to decorate and a woven garment such as simple cotton shirt or a pair of trousers such as Jeans or cotton drill cargo pants or similar.

Fabric & Haberdashery requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop: -

A SELECTION of FABRICS for REPAIRS and PATCHES

You only need ridiculously small scraps of cotton fabrics in prints, checks and block colours. But do consider in conjunction with the original colours of the garments you are working on. You may wish to go tonal or you may wish to go contrast against a plan colour. See how Gary has worked colours in his photographed examples.

THREADS & YARNS

Gary has used cotton Perle embroidery thread and DCM embroidery thread for his decorative stitches and darning details. You can also use fine wools and any other decorative or repair threads you have at hand.

You will also need sew-all or quilting cotton thread in matching colours to garments and patching fabrics for stabilising and hand turning edges of the patches.

USEFUL

Thin strips of fusible web are useful to adhere small patches before stitching, although some tacking stitches can be just as effective

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Fabric, and embroidery scissors

  • Pins

  • Hand sewing needles varying sizes (a wool darning needle if you wish to work in wool)

  • Tape measure, ruler or small quilters graded square

Online Interactive Workshop - Denim Zippy Pouch

It's great to welcome the multi-talented Judith Hollies back for 2021 and in this class you get to make a most fantabulous (Is that a word? No mince pies for webby-boy today, if not!) Denim Zippy Pouch!

Introduction by Judith:-

I've been teaching patchwork & quilting for over 13 years. Many of my patterns and designs have been featured in quilting publications and I am  particularly passionate about repurposing textiles and working with denim to make quilts, bags, cushions and, as you'll see in this workshop, zippy pouches, which I'm sure you're all going to love making!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

During this workshop you will learn:

  • How to prep and repurpose denim

  • Best interfacings to use

  • How to set up your sewing machine (needles & thread) for sewing denim

  • The ‘Quilt As You Go’ quilting technique

  • Zippy pouch construction, including covered zipper tabs, inserting a metal zipper and pouch lining

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Advanced Beginner – you need to have confident use of your sewing-machine (including attaching walking foot) and how to measure and cut fabric using a rotary cutter & ruler.

Pouch A is easier to make - quilted onto thinner interfacing and less detailed

Pouch B is slightly harder to make – quilted onto thicker foam stabiliser & more detailed with denim characteristics

Material/Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

*Available to purchase at www.justjude-designs.com

  • Several pairs of non-stretch denim items e.g. jeans, skirts, shirts (a variety of colours is best). Pay particular attention to interesting sections of the jeans e.g. seams, pockets, worn sections, feature stitching, labels, tabs & loops etc., especially if making Pouch B

  • 8” metal (or nylon) closed ended zipper*

  • Co-ordinating Polyester thread (standard weight)

  • Button to decorate (optional)

  • Ribbon or fine leather cord – Zipper pull (optional)

  • Embroidery Thread for Boro Stitching (I used Aurifil Wool 12wt) Optional

Online Interactive Workshop - Big-Stitch Hand Quilting & Tying

We're delighted to kickstart February 2021 with the highly engaging & multi-talented Lucy Brennan who will deliver a great skills-based class, namely Big-Stitch Hand Quilting & Tying! Here's what's in store for you all...

Introduction by Lucy:-

Big-stitch hand quilting & tying a quilt are two wonderful techniques to use all over a quilt or to add more texture to projects. I will demonstrate and talk you through both techniques so that you have all the knowledge to create secure, neat and beautifully textured stitches!

This will be a relaxing class though it is jam packed with helpful advice, so you can avoid stressing about ‘rules’ and learn how to achieve gorgeous stitches that can be admired front and back! With a focus on tradition as well as modern interpretations, by the end of the class you’ll be brimming with ideas for quilting designs and have the knowledge to easily add special hand made stitches to your projects.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Big stitch hand quilting technique

  • How to securely start and finish your stitching

  • Create neat even stitches that are unique to you, like a signature!

  • Explore different quilting patterns and help deciding what quilting designs to use on different types of patchwork

  • Using big stitch on smaller projects

  • Hand tying a quilt

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Great news - this class is suitable for ALL skill-levels!

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • 2 x 18” wadding (preferably low loft, polyester/bamboo/wool wadding)

  • Basting pins

  • Needle - I prefer to use a longer needle and it has to have a big eye - sharps, embroidery or milliner (straw) needles work well

  • #8 or #12 perle thread, 12wt cotton thread or Sashiko thread

  • Quilting hoop (optional - I don’t use one but you may prefer to try it with one)

  • Thimble (again optional)

  • Water soluble marking pen or quilting pencil

If you have any quilt projects or blocks that you would like to hand-quilt please bring them to class and we can look at how you could quilt them.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • 2 x 16” square of fabric - we will be creating a sampler on this fabric so ideally a solid or simple pattern would work best!

  • 2 x 16” backing fabric
