Online Interactive Workshop Mini-Series x 3 Classes

Rainbow Wave Crochet Blanket!

We're delighted to be hosting this mini-series of THREE x 90-minute workshops over consecutive Saturdays in February 2022 (Please don't worry if you cant attend all three classes or something pops up. They will be recorded so you will be sent the recording automatically a few days after the class. If you sign up as if you are attending live you will receive the patterns as part of your class fee.) These classes are with the wonderful & hugely talented Rachel Hill, aka The Barefoot Crafter! Participants who sign up for these 3 x workshops on Saturday 5th, Saturday 12th and Saturday 19th February 2022 (all will take place between 10.00-11.30am, GMT) will crochet along with Rachel, using her supplied pattern, the end result being that you will make a Rainbow Wave Crochet Blanket - this really is a marvellous mini-series of classes, full of colour & cheer, to blow away the winter gloom and they fit in perfectly with our theme of mindfulness running throughout February. We really hope you'll join us!...

Introduction by Rachel:-

In 2015, my two crafty 'besties' and I wanted to start a new crochet blanket, but couldn’t find a pattern we all liked – so we made our own! It remains one of my most popular projects on Instagram, and is a great pattern to really build and hone your crochet skills: I really hope you'll join me over the 3 x Saturday mornings (morning in the UK, that is!) in February 2022!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Using the pattern I developed with my friends (this pattern provided as part of the £50.00 mini-series class fee), we will go through each step of making a crochet blanket. We’ll chat about choosing yarn, both type and colour, and then look at different methods of starting. From there, we will learn a mix of different crochet stitches, and how to increase and decrease. With these skills under your belt, you’ll be able to tackle more complex projects in the future with confidence!

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This blanket is best suited to the adventurous beginner and upwards. It helps if you can at least chain and DC, but it’s not required - with three separate sessions, I will be able to help you with all your crochet questions! We will have plenty of time to answer questions and crochet along together, with lots of chat in-between!

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Preferred yarn (I used Stylecraft Special DK for the sample blanket)

  • Crochet hook to suit your chosen yarn (I used a 4.5mm clover soft touch hook)

  • Project journal (if you are a note-taker)!

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The pattern for this class is a self-developed pattern, and will be provided to all participants via email in the week before the first class.

IMPORTANT:-

Anyone not able to attend all three workshops in the series 'live' will be provided with a recording of that particular class, so if you do have to miss one or more for some unforeseen reason, worry not - we've got you covered!

Tickets for this Mini-Series of 3 x Online Interactive Workshops (via the Zoom platform) on consecutive Saturdays (5th, 12th & 19th) in February 2022 will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

The ticket price of £50.00 is based on ONE person attending all 3 x crafting classes.

This CraftyMonkies online interactive workshop is being broadcast from the United Kingdom and the class time given is based on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). We advise you check via Google Search (or similar) to see corresponding start-time in YOUR location!

Zoom-Link for these 3 x Workshops

As one purchased Ticket is valid for all three of these Crochet Blanket classes, an individual Zoom-link will be emailed to each participant approximately three days before each class takes place.

Colourful Courthouse Steps!

It's always wonderful to welcome new talent to the CraftyMonkies team so it goes without saying that we're chuffed to bits to lay down the coir "Welcome" mat to another top US-based crafter, Kim Niedzwiecki, who will be delivering a fabulous workshop entitled Colourful Courthouse Steps!...

Introduction by Kim:-

Hi there! My name is Kim and I'm a self-taught sewing enthusiast who started to sew when my fourth child was born, almost 14 years ago. Pregnancy caused my brain to dump all information ever learned about crochet (never to return!) and when looking for baby clothes, I was not happy with either the price nor the juvenile look of baby boy items. Armed with a 1980’s Kenmore machine and no knowledge, I started sewing!

First up was re-upholstering furniture, wet bags for nappies, and then to bibs. The next realm to my thrill-sewing-adventure was quilting! The Go-Go Kim blog was started and with it were tutorials, giveaways and all kinds of sewing adventures! Next, I added garment sewing to my thrill-sewing-adventures, with a few bags thrown in too! On top of this, I have worked in the sewing industry behind the scenes as a social media manager for major brands for nearly ten years. I've taught on Sewing Retreats - both online and in-person. Showing people how much fun it can be to sew is one of my biggest joys! I very much hope you'll join me in February!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Let’s get scrappy! Be prepared for a little mess and... Oh, so much fun!!! In the Colourful Courthouse Steps workshop, you will learn the joys of building the Log Cabin Courthouse Steps Quilt Block while making use of your scraps to create a beautiful quilt that will be loved dearly for many years to come! You will also learn how to create fun fussy cuts for the centre of the blocks. Once you learn how to make fussy cuts, you will want to find even more ways to add them to your quilts!

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Fear not! This brightly-coloured project is practically perfect in every way because it is for all levels of quilters! This is not for experts only! This is a workshop that will introduce you to the wonderful world of log cabin blocks

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The goal of this project is to use fabrics you have on hand! Dive deep into your scrap bins to use a variety of prints. If solids are your jam, you will be able to use almost every colour on any colour card!

The Colourful Courthouse Quilt is intended to be a scrappy quilt meaning many different fabrics to create the blocks, please keep this in mind when choosing fabrics. Fabric requirements for this quilt are as follows - a variety of printed or coloured solid fabric is needed:-

  • 1/4 yard (this is an estimate) for each of the following colours:

  • Pink

  • Red

  • Orange

  • Yellow

  • Green

  • Blue

  • Purple

  • Black/Grey

  • Background Fabric - Solid (White or Ivory) - 1 5/8 yards

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

To make these Blocks you will need the following key equipment:-

  • Sewing-Machine

  • Thread (preferably 50wt)

  • Quilting Grid Ruler

  • Rotary Cutter

Nine Of Hearts!

Monkies fan-fave Gary Mills joins us once again early in the New Year, with a wonderful Nine Of Hearts love-flavoured class which you can create and use to adorn such as cushion fronts, quilts, tote bags, keepsakes - the possibilities are endless. Designer and textiles teacher Gary will take you on a relaxing mindful stitch journey with this lovely machine and hand stitched heart-themed workshop - Nine Hearts to be exact! Do tell us more Gary...

Introduction by Gary:-

Within this workshop you will explore variations of embellishment processes and skills on the theme of hearts to later stitch together to make either a pretty cushion front, or a simple tote bag front or even could multiply into quilt design.

In this workshop I will demonstrate and discuss how much pleasure can be had from slowing down, picking up a needle and thread and simply sewing, be that a repetitive decorative embroidery stitch, or needle turned applique.

Best of all, this project is a scrap-buster and encourages you to reuse repurpose textiles having connections to sustainability, simplicity and preserving memories in all the hearts you stitch.

The project could be a gift to yourself or to a friend, with each square you could capture a beautiful heart felt memory.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This three-hour session is divided into two halves with a short comfort break for 10 minutes in the middle. To begin you will be introduced to the project by Gary who will show you the examples you will be exploring and practicing within the session to give you inspiration and understanding of the possibilities available.

Next Gary will guide you through nine variations he has designed. You will be learning how to cut and assemble each decorated square section, through several textile processes which include bonded applique, reverse applique and cut-away, collaged layers, and printing words from letter stamps. The possibilities are endless and the intention for the workshop is to inspire you.

You will be complimenting your designs with simple hand and machine stitches as you work into each design to bring out each individually.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Gary has many years’ experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of textiles; his workshops are so enjoyable, fun and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance. This workshop is suitable for all; if you are a beginner this is a great project to learn and understand the processes of decorating and assembling simple squares of fabric with hand and machine stitch, to explore some simple embroidery stitches with his easy-to-follow embroidery stitch handout. For those more experienced and advanced you can build your confidence further by honing your creative mind and project skills by working on improved artistic ability to achieve a considered and exciting outcome.

Improv Borders!

We're delighted to welcome back improv-guru-extraordinaire Nicholas Ball in early 2022 for another of his unique improv-flavoured workshops, namely: Improv Borders! This is the first time Nicholas has hosted this class with CraftyMonkies and, based on what we know of past workshops hosted by our Welsh Wizard, tickets are bound to sell-out FAST so please don't wait until after 'mince-pie season' - if you want to be a part of the Improv Borders fun, be sure to book today!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

I’ve always loved the look of medallion quilts! I remember being awestruck when I saw an exhibition of antique Welsh flannel quilts a few years back. These nineteenth century quilts were obviously made in a time before rotary-cutters and rulers and the handwork of their construction was evident in the wonky borders and 'not-quite-matching' points. After the exhibition, I was inspired to create my own medallion quilt and used improvised piecing to create a series of borders to surround a central shape. I was inspired too by Seminole patchwork and the use of strip sets, adapting the technique to better-fit my liberated style of sewing.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop we’ll explore several different border options. The aim of the class is to see how these improvised borders can be sewn with little measuring and can easily be made longer or wider by the addition of extra fabric. We will begin by looking at simple Strip Sets and how varying the components of these sets can create a multitude of different border options. We will then look at Herringbone and Curved Borders, introducing variation through fabric selection and sashing. The class is designed to free you from precision and allow for a more organic quilt as a result. We will aim to make samples of each of the border types, which you can then add to a central unit to make a medallion quilt, or join the borders together to make a smaller project. It's going to be a lot of fun and I really hope you'll be able to join us!...

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Beginner - These techniques are a useful additional to the improv tool box and are great for adding liberated interest to your quilts. The use of strips sets and smaller scraps, without any precise cutting, makes the techniques perfect for quilters of all abilities, whether you have done improv piecing before or not.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for the workshop, my book Inspiring Improv (published by Lucky Spool, 2019) provides six improv piecing techniques which you can use to make a centre unit for your medallion project or incorporate into some of your borders.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Rather than making a finished quilt, we will be looking at the techniques used to make the borders. You may wish to use scrap fabric to practice before committing to your stash’s best.

For the Strip Set borders:-

Long strips in various widths, ranging from 1” to 4” approximately. There is no one correct size. Since it is these widths that will add the most variation to your borders, ensure you have a variety. You can use oddments from a jelly roll, or cut WOF strips from yardage or fat quarters.

For the Herringbones:-

Scraps! The width of the herringbone border is determined by the first scrap we sew, so bring along a variety. You’ll also need some narrow 3/4” strips in a contrasting or complimentary sold.

For the second herringbone technique, bring along some thinner strips, 1” to 2” wide.

Please don’t stress about these requirements! They are simply a guide and I’ve yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me. There is no right or wrong size!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Sewing-Machine

Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

Rotary-Cutter (with a new blade!)

Cutting-Mat

Patchwork Ruler (we can make any size work, but a 6” x 24” and a smaller 1” x 12” are handy sizes for this class)

Fabric Scissors

Online Interactive Workshop

Juniper Basket!

Gracing the CraftyMonkies brand once again, her first Workshop of 2022, is firm fan-favourite Svetlana Sotak, who returns to teach a class she first ran with us back in September 2020, shortly after we began our Online Interactive Workshops on Zoom - introducing once again: Juniper Basket!

On this occasion we also have a BONUS offer with this workshop, as Svetlana has kindly agreed to supply all participants with an additional FQ (fat quarter) friendly XS size as a bonus. The XS bonus pattern is FQ friendly meaning you can use FQs of fabric (as opposed to needing larger cuts) from your stash to make it!

Make a super-handy fabric basket featuring a unique, Japanese inspired drawstring closure using easily accessible sewing supplies and materials. In this class we'll learn how to add structure and stability to your basket as well as how to install and neatly finish a welted zipper pocket (either metal or nylon zipper will both work well). This basket makes a wonderful project bag, storage basket, or even a gift bag!

Subject to which size bag you are interested in making, the following materials are required for this Online Interactive Workshop with Svetlana, which will see you the proud owner of a Small or Large Juniper Basket!

Svetlana's pattern (essential for this project) is included in your course fee and will be forwarded to you, shortly after you've signed up for the course!:-

Online Interactive Workshop

Mad March Hare!

Firm CraftyMonkies fan-fave, Gary Mills joins us once again in Spring 2022 with this truly wonderful workshop which will see you engage with appliqué & free-motion embroidery to create Gary's Mad March Hare! Here's the fabulous Gary to tell you more!...

Introduction by Gary:-

Introducing the adorable ‘Mad March Hare’ Appliqué and Free-Motion Embroidery design for this three-hour workshop!

This class is very much a ‘skills bomb’ of processes for you to learn.  I've tailored this project for all to enjoy learning a mixture of creative textile skills. You will begin the session firstly by transferring the supplied image onto cloth, next how to use heat bonded adhesive for securing the appliqué pieces; I will then guide you through using Free-Motion Embroidery to add an artistic sketched stitched line to bring your appliqué to life.

The workshop is a perfect start to get to grips with these addictive, skilled processes - you will even learn some hand-tinting with colour to finish off your outcome! This class is full of little cheats and 'how-to' tips to get the best results from both your sewing-machine and YOU!

The ‘Mad March Hare’ could be simply framed but would make a great panel for a quilt or even a cushion centre - I'll discuss with you any ideas that come up through this workshop!...

What you will learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This three-hour session is divided into two halves with a short comfort break for 10 minutes in the middle. To begin you will be introduced to the project, and then Gary will guide you through each of the skills processes:

You will learn how to transfer the image, how to cut and then bond onto fabric small pattern pieces to build the image.

Prepare the fabric for free-motion embroidery and apply stitches to further secure but also add a defining line to the image which is then tinted with hand paints to add a unique hand-crafted finish to your work.

Skill Level required for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Gary has many years of experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of textiles; his workshops are so enjoyable, fun and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance. This workshop is suitable for all; if you are a beginner this is a great project to learn and understand the processes of bonded appliqué with addition of free motion stitching for decoration. For those more experienced and advanced you can further hone your skills by working on improved accuracy and artistic ability to achieve a first-class professional finish.
