Online Interactive Workshop: Artisan Apron

Janet Clare joins us once again with another inspiring (and wonderfully practical!) project for you set a whole day aside for!

The Story Behind This Project

When she had two small(ish) boys and worked from home, Janet often found herself getting distracted by all the chores and housework and not really getting much work (designing and sewing) done. After much thinking she realised that if she had a uniform to wear she would feel and look like I was actually at work and not at home! Great thinking, Janet!

Hence, the Artisan Apron was born and it is so lovely and pale and special that I’m not tempted to clean the house, cook or brush the dog instead of working because I don't want to spoil my pinny! As time has gone on Janet has added embroidered sayings and motto's such as 'She believed she could and so she did', badges and bits of lace and buttons and now when she puts on her apron in the morning she feels creative, inspired and ready for work! Janet's apron also gives her courage when she has daunting things to do, such as monthly live TV shows or standing up to talk to a huge group (like you CraftyMonkies!).

Janet's apron has become more than a uniform for her: it is her signature garment, a comfort. She feels like her whenever she wears it. Putting her apron on helps Janet begin her creative process. And when she takes it off, she knows her work is done for the day and it's time to relax.

Janet's Artisan Apron: Teaching Points covered in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Basic Dressmaking - straight seams, curved seams, darts, lined pockets, setting pockets into side seams, clipping curves, bagging out (adding a lining), pressing, topstitching and finishing.

Janet's Artisan Apron: Pattern

Is inspired by a vintage pinny and has curved seams, big pockets and a cross-over back. The pattern includes seven sizes ranging from small to 4XL and its loose fit makes it comfortable to wear. And it’s not that tricky to make either.

  • Small - UK dress measurements - Size 10
  • 4XL - UK dress measurements - Size 32

Participants who don’t already have Janet's pattern - the cost is £11.99, excluding P&P - MUST BUY IT IN ADVANCE of the workshop from Janet's online Etsy shop (please ensure you allow enough time for delivery ahead of the class!) via the following link: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/184039707/artisan-apron-pattern-make-and-embellish

See the PDF (within Janet's information section for this workshop on the website) for Janet's supplied Requirements for this class - please note that fabric is required for the Apron Outer AND also the Apron Lining, so the fabric requirements have to be effectively doubled,  as can be seen by the example given for the 3XL size at the bottom of the table on Janet's Requirements PDF.

Janet's Artisan Apron: The Fit

The fit is always hard to advise people on. Janet's is a medium but the Small and Large fit her too because the shape is so forgiving. Janet says the neckline gets too wide for her in the larger sizes and slips off her shoulders and of course there is too much fabric everywhere but, somehow, it ‘fits’. The main fit issue is the length of the shoulder straps/ how high the neckline sits on those who are well endowed. This is an easy fix and Janet will discuss it in the briefing video (which we'll add to the website when it's filmed).

Janet's Artisan Apron: Skill Level Required

Janet feels her Artisan Apron project is suitable for all, but people must be comfortable with a sewing machine and have cut all their fabric pieces (fronts, linings and pockets, etc) out BEFORE the workshop!

Further details of Materials/Equipment required for this Online Interactive Workshop will be updated on here once we have them and shared with all those who sign up for Janet's course in advance of that upload.

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited & allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Ticket price is based on ONE person attending this workshop.
