Illusions In The 3D!
We're super excited about discovering Andrea Alonge and her incredible talent on Instagram and then persuading her to teach a class for us: Illusions In The 3D! This class will see participants engage in some really clever techniques that we haven't seen before to create some very interesting visual effects. A really great opportunity to experience something very unique! Here's Andrea to tell you more...
Introduction by Andrea:-
I grew up surrounded by textiles, as my mother and grandmother were both avid quilters (and weavers, crafters, knitters- everything textile!) and I learned to sew early on in my childhood. I ended up going to art school, and while I began my art career in ceramics, I couldn’t leave textiles alone, eventually getting my Master of Fine Arts degree in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art. One of my signature techniques is drawing with pattern and stripes, and making quilted works that “break the square”. I love to use textiles with pre-printed patterns as a mark-making tool. And now I’d love to share that with you!
What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-
Have you ever looked at a design and thought, "How do they do that?!" It might be a 3D effect or a seemingly continuous curve - an interesting illusion upon the eye that is visually pleasing! Well, in this 3 hour workshop we’ll learn the steps necessary to do just that with fabric and clever placing! We’ll learn to “draw” with striped fabric, including curves and making spirals. You will learn how to cut stripes at angles that allow you to make curved and angled shapes like you see in the photos and how to use Dresden plate techniques to create spirals. It’s such fun and looks clever, but when I’ve shown you how it’s also not that difficult and you can use it anywhere no matter what type of ‘quilter’ you are! In this 3 hour workshop we’ll learn the steps necessary to “draw” with striped fabric, including curves and making spirals. You will learn how to cut stripes at angles that allow you to make curved and angled shapes and how to use Dresden plate techniques to create spirals.
Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
This workshop is geared toward those who are familiar with a sewing-machine!
Material & Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
Striped fabric (this can be pre-printed fabric or you may choose to pre-assemble a striped quilted base of your choice to work with)
Andrea would suggest at least two yards depending on the width of your stripe. The content of this workshop can be adapted to almost any stripe width, and curves and angles are very adaptable, but it is best to have around two yards depending on the stripe width and whether your fabric has more than one colour of stripe. Multi-stripe fabrics that include many different stripes are also adaptable, but for ease, it is best if the repeat of the stripe is less than 10” (inches).
Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
Good lighting is always helpful!...
Sewing-Machine - any machine will do, this is just for ease of sewing while in class
Quilting Ruler - necessary to measure for spirals. The most useful ruler will have some angles, but there will be a pre-printable Dresden plate pattern attached.
Rotary Cuttter - Useful for precision cutting of stripes for curves
Thread - any general purpose thread in a colour that will complement your fabric!
Sharp Scissors - We will use these for spiral creation!
Water-soluble Marking Pen - this will be used for spiral patterns!
Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-
An adaptable Dresden plate pattern will be sent to al those who book their place on this class, with a few different versions depending on number of petals. It will be sent a few days before the workshop.
