Introduction by Carolina:-

Hello, I am Carolina. I’m the mother of three wonderful children; two girls and one boy, and wife of a wonderful husband. I was born in Chile in the picturesque village of Valparaíso and I've travelled and lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina (where I had the incredible opportunity of learning patchwork with Teresita Leal and Cecilia Koppman, known Argentinian quilters) and I currently live in São Paulo, Brazil, where I have my own studio, from where I am continuously creating and developing my art and teaching that WE ARE ALL CREATIVE!!! I have always liked constantly learning and perfecting myself, every February I travel to the Quiltcon where I go to different classes, workshops and talks with known international quilters. I also studied Color Interaction with Professor and artist Eduardo Vilches in the Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile. My quilts have been exhibited in many Quilt Festivals around the world,  such as Quilt Week (Paducah, Lancaster, Des Moines, Daytona Beach, Grand Rapids, Virginia Beach), Quiltcon, Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, European Carrefour do Patchwork, Fiberart International, Festival do Patchwork Gramado and Floripa Quilt Festival (both in Brazil) and my work has been featured at art centers and galleries in Europe, USA and Chile. I love to teach online quilting and design classes and I can't wait to meet you!

What you will learn in this in-person Workshop:-

Join Carolina as she teaches you her very clever process of how to create a “Watercolor Quilt”. What is the one thing many people struggle with? Colour! So let's begin there. First you will start learning about Colour Theory, the chromatic circle and the 3 variables of colour. This could be a whole workshop in itself! Carolina will then guide you throughout the process of choosing fabrics to create a beautiful transition with colours (like when we paint with watercolors!) How o we translate this to a quilt? How do we create a watercolour effect? Carolina will teach you the process, step by step. You can be sure that this complete one-day course will provide you with many new techniques and colour theory knowledge that will allow you to feel confident designing, cutting and sewing in an improvisational way, but with some rules to create beautiful movement in your quilts. A truly unique and wonderful opportunity..

Join us on Sunday 5th May 2024 in London for a truly fabulous One-Day, live, In-Person workshop with Sarah Hibbert and her wonderful 'Freestyle Piecing' workshop!

Introduction by Sarah:-

I owe huge thanks to Rod Stewart for my interest in collage! Why? Well, as a teenager I used to cover my walls with cutting and posters of Rod. Unfortunately, one term I came home from school with a bad report and my Father decided it was my interest in Rod that was hindering my school work and promptly tore down all my posters and banned me from putting anymore up. So I changed over to adding photos, tickets and odd pages from my Mother’s Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue to my walls. Needless to say Rod was still there in scrap books under my bed! So my love of collage, cutting and sticking began and I love nothing more that sharing my passion for collage with others and now with you dear CraftyMonkie! I must stress that although this is an art based class, it's still very much with the sewist in mind. Its what I do; collage and then quilt, I hope to inspire you in the same way...

What you will learn in this in-person Workshop:-

Now come on lovely quilters...do you have scraps of fabric which you are not sure how to use and really do not want to throw away? The answer is surely a resounding YES! Well, why not put them all together in a freeform piece of patchwork, using what you have in your fabric stash together with unused blocks to make a unique ‘you’ piece. Free style patchwork is a form of improvisational piecing allowing your fabrics to decide where they should be pieced to make the best of them. It takes out the guessing game of choosing the right fabrics to go together. It is a perfect way of using up scraps from other projects or using those extra special pieces you have been saving for just the right project.

In this class you'll be matching your piecing up by size and not colour, building on each block as it grows, rather than colour combinations. The key to bringing the colours into a perfect balance is choosing the fabrics itself with a highlight accent to make that spark. Trusts your instincts, this piece is designed for you so if you are happy with the colour palette than your job is done. We will cut pieces into a wide range of rectangles and squares, including some very small pieces, long strips, and large chunks. This class is such fun, we could even swap pieces with each other. It's about using your intuition, learning about colour and texture, in a way I guess it's very much like collaging. Going with the flow and playing with fabrics, what better way to spend a day out? I do hope you will join me.

Join us on Monday 6th May 2024 in London for a truly fabulous One-Day, live, In-Person workshop with Nicholas Ball and her wonderful 'Welsh Flannel Quilt' workshop!

Introduction by Nicholas about Welsh Quilting history:-

Wales has a rich quilting history that predates the Amish. Once one of the country’s most important exports, flannel has found its way not only into the national costume of Wales, but also into many stunning examples of improvised quilts. Less known than wholecloth examples, Welsh flannel quilts were first created out of necessity, for warmth and comfort. Now, they are works of art which hold their own against more celebrated examples of improvisation, such as the quilts of Gee’s Bend.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

During the workshop, you will learn how to improvisationally piece many of the familiar elements found in Welsh flannel quilts, such as four patch, nine patch, half square triangles, and quarter square triangles. Each student will receive a small piece of traditional Welsh flannel which they will combine with brought fabrics to create a small improvisational study, approximately 18” square.  Students will then learn big-stitch hand quilting using wool thread to add wonderful texture to their quilt in a number of traditional motifs, as well as a more organic, improvised design. Each student will receive a reel of thread for quilting. Finally, the edges of the quilt will be finished using a traditional Welsh butted edge technique.

Skill Level for this Workshop:-

The workshop is suitable for all skill levels.  The traditional blocks will be familiar to new and experienced quilters, whilst the improvisational nature of the piecing will provide a gentle introduction to sewing without patterns or specific measurements.  A small quilt study is also great for learning how best to fit irregular sized pieces together without feeling overwhelmed and provides a firm foundation for lots of other improvised techniques.

Material requirements for this Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for the workshop, my book Use & Ornament (Lucky Spool,2023) will expand upon some of the techniques learnt and provide many more improv tips and tricks.

Equipment requirements for this Workshop:-

  • Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A sewing machine - you could hand piece, yet this will be slower and so you may not achieve as much on the day.

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

  • Sharp fabric scissors

  • A hand needle for quilting - I prefer a long milliner’s needle.  Use whatever length you are comfortable with, though ensure that whatever you choose has a large eye to accommodate the thicker woollen thread.  We will be using a 12wt thread for quilting.

  • A willingness to explore your own creativity!

Fabric Equipment requirements for this Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide.

An assortment (4-6) fat quarters in your chosen colour scheme.  Students may wish to use the traditional colours of Welsh flannel quilts, which are black and red, though any colour scheme will work.  The flannel provided will be a mixture of red, black, and cream.

A piece of wadding approximately 22” square

A piece of backing fabric approximately 22” square

An assortment of small square and rectangular scraps in your chosen colours for added interest.

Please don’t stress about these requirements. They are simply a guide and I’ve yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me.

Questions You May Have!

Do I have to bring my own Sewing Machine?

The short answer is YES! We won't be hiring any machines in, there will be one machine available to use. If you need to hire a machine, please contact us as we may be able to help you, but from all of our previous events it appears that most people like to bring that own machines. With car parking so close by and many of our students choosing to drive we hope that wont be an issue!

Is there a Car Park nearby? I might drive!

Yes! It costs £9.10 for the full day and its literally 20 steps walk from the venue entrance! If you are staying at the Premier Inn there is a also a Car Park attached to their hotel.

Is there a Lift/Elevator on-site - I'm not great on my feet?

Yes! We will be taking your bags for you up to the room, so don't worry. Just wheel your sewing bag into the cafe, we will take over from there. After a coffee you can use the lift to go upstairs and re-meet your bag!

Can I get a train there?

Yes! The very swanky and fairly new Elizabeth Line is a three minute walk from the venue. You literally come out of the train station turn right, take a short stroll down the hill and you are there!

What sort of food are you serving? I have allergies!

The Woolwich Works has a wonderful café: you will simply be ordering whatever food you would like from the café menu (up to a set price), they are fully-able to cater for anyone with allergies, just be sure to let us know BEFORE the event of your individual requirements.

I'm a little nervous about heading to London!

Please don't be nervous! First of all, the venue is really accessible; I'll be writing to all who book nearer the time with full instructions on how to enter the building. Everything will be marked out for you so you will know exactly where you're going on the day. In terms of the sewing, if you are a complete beginner, it doesn't matter. Our teachers are fantastic in their approach. They are there to guide you every step of the way and they & we will be holding your hand all the way through!...

I have other questions you haven't touched upon above!

No problem: just email Rachel via rachel@craftymonkies.com and I'll answer anything you might be concerned about!

In the hope we've whetted your appetite for all we've got lined up for May 2024, we really hope to see you on ONE, TWO or maybe ALL THREE of our London Quilting Days!...
