I’m always looking for inventive ways to use fabrics and make exciting details on my quilt tops. If you are too, this class is for you! In this class I’ll show you a flexible, creative approach to the usual technique of appliqué, using fabric scraps to construct bold shapes and motifs. By incorporating both hand and machine sewing options, students can explore their preferred techniques while focusing on eco-friendly quilting practices. We’ll experiment at making a variety of shapes, abstract, lines, rings, dots and maybe lettering! This could be the start of a larger quilt project or simply a creative exercise to help open you up to new ideas through making a few smaller samples.
What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-
In this class you will learn how to creatively use fabric scraps and remnants to make expressive appliqué designs for quilt tops. This class teaches an alternative version of traditional appliqué using secondhand fabrics, where you will press fabric scraps with an iron to create unique, somewhat unexpected shapes and motifs. I will show you examples I’ve made and give you insight into my process in choosing, arranging, and manipulating fabrics to find a satisfying composition. You will learn hand sewing with simple stitches and machine sewing with options to either leave the edges raw or turn them under for a clean finish. This class encourages sustainable art-making through recycling fabrics while exploring expressive design.
Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
You should have basic sewing skills for this class – be comfortable hand sewing and/or using a machine. You are free to use any hand embroidery skills you may have to embellish the appliqué too!
