A few years ago my eldest son asked me to make him a quilt. This was music to my ears until he began explaining what he did and didn’t want - NO flowers, NO detailed blocks, NOTHING pretty, NO pictures (appliqué) and NO fabric prints with recognisable things on them!?!
Long story short (and many conversations over quilt books later!) he eventually allowed me to make him a zig-zag quilt and the agreed upon Delectable Mountain Block was interesting and fun for me to make whilst still meeting my client's exacting criteria!! The finished zig-zag quilt is now at university with him which as every quilter knows is pretty much the ultimate compliment. I have re-visited the Delectable Mountain block a few times since then.
You can see examples of my ‘Up Hill, Down Dale’ quilt which was designed for use with 10 inch layer cakes. Or my ‘Rhythm’ quilt which uses a very tight colour palette. Use scraps or a tight colour palette to make your delectable mountain blocks and then you can arrange them in a zig-zag or diamond shapes to create your own unique quilt!
