Introduction by Sarah:-
Hand quilting as a traditional quilt finishing technique which has been around as long as quilts have. It is a beautiful way to complete a project and is perfect for those occasions when your quilt just screams out for that authentic finishing touch. You can keep it simple with straight lines or really go to town with the design and make it a feature of your project.
In this class we will talk about various types of hand quilting and good practice, but the sample you will be making will be a real feature. I am supplying a template for you to use to create a detailed symmetrical design for a 10 inch finished block. You can make it into a placemat or a cushion if you like – but in this case the stitching is going to be the star.
This class is perfect for beginners and assumes no previous knowledge at all.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
This class is perfect for beginners and assumes no previous knowledge at all.
Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
Sewing needle – you have choices when it comes to needles, but don’t worry too much about the exact ones you use for the class. The bigger the number on a needle, the finer or smaller it is!
All of the following will be fine:-
“Betweens” – these are hand quilting needles and you can use a size 8 or 9 needle and when comfortable with that size try a smaller size.
Embroidery needles – I like these because the eyes tend to be a little larger so you can use a thicker thread for your hand quilting. Again a size 8 or 9 will be fine. Pony and Clover both do great examples.
Sharps – they have a pointy tip and are a little longer than Betweens. Again an 8 or a 9 will be fine.
Embroidery or small snip scissors.
Paper scissors.
Marking tool – water erasable is best. Just check it does erase from your chosen fabric before using in class.
We wont be using a frame or hoop for this class so don’t panic about getting one.
Basting method – safety pins or 505 fabric spray glue. You can also stitch baste the layers together as well. All methods will be discussed during the class.
Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
12 inch square of plain or lightly patterned fabric for the front and back of your piece.
14 inch square of wadding or batting.
Thread - Sarah suggests a stranded cotton for this project. You can use a perle 8 (assuming that the eye of the needle will allow you to use thread that thick). We want the quilting to be the star, so using a thicker thread is a great option!
