Online Interactive Workshop: Improv Quilting

We're absolutely delighted to welcome another NEW guest tutor under the CraftyMonkies creative umbrella: the wonderful & hugely talented Lisa Hofmann-Maurer is joining us to teach her fabulous Improv Curves class - and we can't wait! Here's Lisa to tell you all about it!...

Introduction by Lisa:-

Improv and curves are both something really close to my heart. I’m an all-in person and like to jump into challenges. So I have never been afraid of those curves. But I do understand those of you, that are. Sometimes it is just because you want it to be perfect. And guess what? Those improv curves will look perfect no matter what -  just pretend every single one of them was what you were going for!!! It’s fun, freeing and just something you’ll be proud of. Join me for some tips and tricks and also for some laughter - who doesn't love laughter?!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop we’ll explore the improv curves. In my teaching journey I noticed that a lot of you quilters are afraid of “the curve” and won’t even try piecing one. Or, if you ever trie, you’re not doing it again because it didn’t turn out as 'perfect' as you are used to or you would have loved it to be. In this class, we’ll approach the curves from an improv side.

You’ll learn how to piece those “imperfect” curves, you’ll get a lot of practice doing so and later on – if you desire so – you might even be able to sew a “perfect” curve, just because you had fun sewing those “imperfect” ones. And if you’re a seasoned curve piecer you’ll learn my technique on how to approach the improv curves without the use of templates or a lot of planning. We will also talk a little bit about color, fabric and value of colors, to be able to make the right choices for an impressive quilt. We will aim to make a smaller project or the beginning of a larger piece. It's going to be a lot of fun and I really hope you'll be able to join me!...

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Confident Beginners and everyone interested in Improv Curves - the class will help you get confident with those curves and will add a great new technique to your improv tool box.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

It’s very difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing improv curves. A good selection of different fabrics is very helpful, you might want to use a mix of prints and solids. You can use scraps or fat quarters from your stash in coordinating colors for accents and contrast. We will only use a small amount of fabric in the class and the final amount needed will depend on the number of blocks you want to make. The background fabric is the biggest piece you’ll need and should measure at least 21 x 21 cm.

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing-Machine
  • Chalk Marker or Water Soluble Pen for Fabric
  • Good quality Thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)
  • Rotary Cutter - with a new blade (a small blade is not a must but very helpful)
  • Cutting-Mat
  • Patchwork Ruler
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Thread cutter
  • Most important! A positive mindset towards improv and letting go of the concept of 'perfection'!
