Introduction to Michael:-

For more than 20 years, Michael Eason has been exploring the art of quilting, with a special passion for English Paper Piecing (EPP). What began with his first quilt on his mother’s old Singer sewing machine has grown into a love for blending tradition with innovation. Inspired by Modern Quilting and QuiltCon 2024, Michael began designing his own unique EPP shapes, breaking free from standard patterns to create fresh, artistic pieces. Through his workshops, he invites quilters to unleash their creativity - experimenting with shape, scale, and fabric choices - to design one-of-a-kind projects that reflect their own artistic voice.

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Discover the freedom of improv design through English Paper Piecing! In this workshop, you’ll learn how to transform a simple sheet of 8.5" x 11" card stock into your own original pattern - sketching, cutting, and preparing paper pieces with accuracy and ease. Along the way, we’ll cover essential skills like adding seam allowances, labelling pieces for correct fabric placement, and aligning shapes as you sew.

 

You’ll also explore both glue and thread basting methods, giving you the flexibility to find what works best for your style. Finally, we’ll dive into creative approaches for scaling your design and using fabric choices to add depth, movement, and personality to your work. By the end of the class, you’ll walk away with the confidence and tools to design unique improv EPP projects - merging traditional techniques with modern artistry to create something that’s entirely your own.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Suitable for beginners, but some knowledge of EPP or hand stitching is helpful!

 

Material/Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-​

Required Items:

• 8.5 x 11 inch card stock (Paper should be thicker than printer paper, eg 250/300gsm in weight)

• Fabric – A variety of print or colour. Large scraps are perfect!

• Pencil

• Ruler - (I use a 3 x 18 but smaller works as well)

• Paper Sscissors

• Fabric Scissors

• Glue Stick

• Needle - (I prefer a size 9 or 10 Milliners needle)

• Thread - (Wonderfil Decobob 80wt, or a brand of your choosing as long as the weight is higher)

• Thimble

• Ability to take a photo

 

Optional Items:

• Sewtites Magnets or clips to hold pieces together while sewing

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-​

• Large scraps or orphan blocks can be used, or Fat Eighths will work well. A variety of colours and or patterns will be needed.
