The Art of Tessellation:

Einstein Tiles & English Paper Piecing

If you were lucky enough to get a place on our inaugural class with the wonderfully talented tutor, Michael Eason, you would know that he is an awesome teacher, so patient and kind, but also really really GOOD! The way he brings EPP to life is something to behold, and we are so glad we have grabbed him before he becomes huge and in too much demand!!! He's coming back with something new, something that made our students go 'Oooh' and 'Aaaah' when he mentioned it in class! So here's Michael to tell you more!...

Introduction to Michael:-

Michael Eason is an English Paper Piecing (EPP) artist, designer, and educator known for exploring the creative possibilities of hand stitching through unexpected shapes and modern design concepts. While many quilters begin their EPP journey with traditional hexagons, Michael is passionate about pushing beyond familiar forms to discover how geometry, color, and repetition can create entirely new visual experiences.

His teaching focuses on making EPP accessible, approachable, and enjoyable for everyone. By breaking complex-looking designs into simple, repeatable steps, Michael helps students build confidence while developing both technical skills and creative curiosity. His workshops blend traditional handwork with contemporary design ideas, encouraging students to slow down, enjoy the process, and discover that even the most intricate quilts begin with a single stitch.

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

What happens when mathematics meets fabric? In 2023, a newly discovered shape known as the Einstein Tile captured the attention of mathematicians, artists, and quilters around the world. This remarkable shape can tile a surface without gaps or repeating patterns, creating fascinating and unexpected designs. In this three-hour online workshop, students will explore the beauty of tessellation through the lens of English Paper Piecing. Beginning with a brief introduction to the history of EPP and the story behind the Einstein Tile, participants will learn how complex geometric designs can be built from simple kite-shaped units. Through guided demonstrations and hands-on stitching, students will learn the fundamentals of English Paper Piecing while creating their own Einstein Tile-inspired design. Along the way, we'll explore fabric selection, fussy cutting, secondary pattern development, and the meditative rhythm that makes EPP such a rewarding technique.

By the end of the workshop students will:-

• Understand the basic principles of tessellation and the Einstein Tile.

• Learn the history and methodology of English Paper Piecing.

• Gain confidence preparing and basting paper templates.

• Learn how to accurately stitch kite-shaped EPP units together.

• Explore fabric selection strategies that enhance tessellation designs.

• Use fussy cutting techniques to create secondary patterns and visual movement.

• Understand how color, value, and repetition influence the overall design.

• Leave with the skills needed to continue building Einstein Tile compositions independently.
