EPP: Dream It, Piece It!

Let us tell you about our previous collaboration with Ms Hibbert! It all began quite a long time ago with CraftyMonkies owner Rachel gently - and then not so gently! - trying to persuade Sarah that she simply had to teach with us online. Rachel was absolutely convinced that if she did, Sarah's class would be incredibly popular. Not only would she enjoy the experience (with us there to guide her through it), but it would also give people around the world the chance to learn from this in-demand artist - something that is usually only possible in person. Sarah very rarely teaches online, so it took a while. In fact, it took rather a long time. But then, rather like buses, two classes appeared at once (see the listing for Sarah's From Story To Stitch class below) and... Voilà! Rachel was proved right: both classes sold out within days!

It was wonderful to see makers from across the world so excited to learn with Sarah, and it confirmed what we already knew - her knowledge, warmth, and teaching style are something truly special. Which brings us to the next chapter. We have decided to go one step further and offer another class - but this one is a little different. This time it’s English Paper Piecing with a twist. Not only will Sarah guide you through the technique itself, but she will also show you how to design your own EPP patterns. It’s the kind of creative insight that opens up endless possibilities and gives you the confidence to move beyond simply following patterns and start creating your own.

Introduction by Sarah:-

“Life is like a 10-speed bike. Most of us have gears we never use.” – Charlie Brown

So why not spend a few hours playing with papers and some gorgeous fabrics? Whether you’re learning the skill of English Paper Piecing for the first time, or revisiting a technique you already know and love, this workshop invites you to explore it in a new way. Within The Quilters’ Guild collection there is the earliest known EPP coverlet still bearing its original paper templates, dating back to 1718. It’s a wonderful reminder of just how long makers have been enjoying this beautifully mindful technique. Now I can’t promise anything quite that historic! But we will certainly have fun experimenting with creating your own designs to make a unique EPP piece.

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

We will be covering drafting a pattern on to template card, colour choices to highlight the shapes, basting, and finally joining the pieces together.  I will show you some pre-drawn designs on camera as well to get your taste buds flowing.  Also, I will be showing you techniques on how to finish your work by binding or mounting onto a frame. A joyful few hours of slow hand stitching, chatting over stories, what could be better?

From Story To Stitch!

Regrettably, BOTH of Sarah's From Story To Stitch classes are now SOLD OUT - the information below is relevant to all those fortunate enough to secure their place on this workshop on the two dates!

Get ready for a BRAND NEW (for us) class with the ever popular Sarah Hibbert and her beautiful display of hand quilting techniques and the wonderful 'mindful' properties they offer. Sarah very rarely teaches online - which makes this class something truly special. Despite our close friendship and five years of running workshops together, it has taken a long time (and a lot of persuading!) to convince Sarah to offer a full-length online class with us!

She has joined our online programme once before in a short, breakout-style format, but this time is completely different. Sarah will be with us for a full three hours, generously sharing her exceptional knowledge in her much-loved Hand Quilting class - a workshop that is requested worldwide and always sells out.

We are absolutely thrilled to be able to offer makers from across the globe this rare opportunity to learn directly from Sarah on our platform. Read on to discover why this class is so sought after - and what this special experience could offer you.

Introduction by Sarah:-

Hand quilting and piecing definitely makes for a joyful day for me. Create your own unique table mat or decorative quilted square, working freestyle in a log cabin inspired layout.  I'm going to teach you how to play with colour, texture and scale using linen and cotton, and learn how different stitches, knots and quilting techniques can add depth and character to your work. I will be going quite in-depth in our three hours together, but my aim, which is always the same in this class, is to provide you with a restful restorative three hour experience where we cannot only learn, but also come together and sew as a community.

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

From the layout of your fabric choices I will talk you through colour balance, and what would add a spark to your unique pieces and I will be talking through the different quilting styles or knots, covering colour and thread choices to marry well with your own fabrics, together with the best choice of wadding and backing fabric. Lot's to take on board and think about!

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This is a great starter lesson into hand quilting but I feel that anyone who enjoys fabric and thread, whatever level, you can always enjoy a session in hand quilting and picking up an odd tip or two.  What is there not to enjoy than sitting back with thread in hand and listening to stories being told?  A sort of ‘Jackanory’ with fabric!

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The materials needed are as follows:-

  • a variety of plain or pattern cotton or linen fabrics.  Cut into stips of roughly 3” wide and 12” long.  The ideal number of pieces would 10 to give a variety of choice.

  • Wadding and cotton backing fabric roughly 14” square.

  • A sewing needle and cotton thread for piecing.

  • A variety of quilting threads, various weights that we can talk about in the session.  Perle thread, 8wt and 12wt threads are a good starting point.

  • Various quilting needles, again this will be discussed in the session.  But you need to be able to have a needle eye that will fit you thread.

  • Lastly a piece of binding 4” wide by 52” long.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

As above.
