Stitching Stories
I'm so excited to introduce a brand new artist to the CraftyMonkies family: Jamie Rawlings! If you haven't come across Jamie on Instagram yet, you will soon. His following is growing fast, and it's easy to see why.
Jamie takes vintage postcards, treasured family portraits and landscape photographs and brings them to life with embroidery. It sounds simple. A few lines of coloured thread across a mountain? We could all do that! But that's not the point. When you see Jamie's work, it moves you. Every stitch is placed with intention, and somehow it changes the whole story the picture tells. Sometimes it's tender, sometimes it's playful, sometimes it's quietly haunting, but it always makes you stop and look again.

Not every project needs to be a gigantic quilt! Mindful, slow hand stitching is making a wonderful comeback, and this is exactly where Jamie's work fits. Imagine yourself on a train, a postcard in your lap and a needle in your hand. Or picture your next trip away, browsing for the perfect postcard and already knowing what you're going to do with it. This class isn't only about embroidery. It's about opening your mind to a meditative practice you can create for yourself, whether that's every day, once a week, in your favourite coffee shop or on your next train journey. It's about expanding your horizons.
There's something else too. In our VIP Club, one of the things our members love most is jumping inside an artist's mind: discovering what makes them tick and how they approach a design. Jamie is utterly fascinating, and this class is your chance to do just that. You'll see how he looks at an image, what he feels, and how he decides where that very first stitch should go. This is what Jamie will be sharing with you. Not just stitches on a postcard, but a whole new way of seeing.
INTRODUCTION BY JAMIE RAWLINGS
I'm Jamie Rawlings, a self-taught embroidery artist who works with found photographs and vintage postcards. I love giving old images a new life with hand stitching, colour and texture, creating little pieces that sit somewhere between memory, storytelling and playful reinvention. People sometimes look at my work and think, "It's only a few straight stitches." And technically, they're right! But the magic isn't in how difficult the stitch is. It's in where you put it and why. A single line of thread can draw your eye to something you'd never noticed, hide something that needs to be hidden, bring a faded fashion right up to date, or add a feeling the original photograph never had. I want to show you how to find that.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS ONLINE INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP
This workshop is about learning to look at an image, feel something, and then let your stitches say it.
Together we'll explore:
-
Choosing your image: what makes a photograph or postcard work beautifully with stitch, whether it's a portrait of someone you love, a favourite landscape or a vintage find
-
Reading the picture: finding the mood, the story and the details worth highlighting (or hiding!)
-
Placement: how where you stitch changes everything about how the image feels
-
Stitch choices: a selection of embroidery stitches and how each one can create a different effect, from bold and graphic to soft and delicate
-
Colour and thread: choosing colours that work with your image, or deliberately against it
-
The practical bits: preparing a sturdy card surface, making evenly spaced holes and stitching carefully through card

You'll leave with your own embroidered postcard, plus the confidence to look at any photograph and see its stitching potential. No two will ever look alike, and that's exactly the point.
SKILL LEVEL FOR THIS ONLINE INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP
Beginner-friendly. No previous embroidery experience is necessary, as Jamie will cover the basics and you can work at your own pace. Experienced stitchers will love it too, as this class is as much about creative vision as technique. A little patience and some careful preparation will be helpful.
