Online Interactive Workshop: Faux Ruched Flowers!

We're delighted to be hosting this Faux Ruched Flowers workshop with the wonderful & hugely talented Karen Miller from Redbird Quilt Co! This class will see participants learn all the steps necessary to prepare both basic & modified decorative treats. Here's Karen to tell us more!...

Introduction by Karen:-

Are you ready to add stunning dimensional fabric flowers to your quilt projects? Join me for this Faux Ruched Flowers technique-based workshop – it’ really is as simple as A... B... C!

Many years ago I attended a retreat with an amazingly skilled artist who specialised in hand appliqué. She taught needle turn appliqué, reverse appliqué, bias stems and these delightful faux ruched flowers. I was enthralled with their beauty so I happily added them to a few of my quilts including Chevron with a Twist for the Moda Bake Shop, A Quilters Doodles Quilt for Aurifil and my Redbird Garden Block for Aurifil’s 2019 Block of the Month Quilt.  They’re easily prepared  - you just need a square of fabric, background fabric, needle, thread and a few carefully placed stitches! I assure you, you will LOVE the interest it adds to your quilt projects! I’m excited to share the process with you - it’s straight forward and simple - let’s do this together!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this three- hour workshop we’ll learn the steps necessary to prepare both basic and modified Faux Ruched Flowers. We’ll work together to size and trim our square of fabric, secure the edge stitching, attach it to the background fabric and sculpt the flower centre. We’ll cover the use of a quilter’s knot and discuss Karen's favourite needle and thread choices. Once our first flower is in place we’ll switch it up a bit - Karen will share the steps necessary to change the shape, size, petal count and flower density. To wrap it up we’ll take another look at the variety of ruched flowers included in the 'A Quilter’s Doodles Quilt' and discuss other ways to use them. Before you know it you’ll be digging through your work-in-progress quilts to see how you can enhance them by adding a Faux Ruched Flower; you'll maybe want to create two, three or more!...

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is geared toward anyone willing to work with needle and thread! No experience is required. We’ll have you adding these lovely dimensional flowers to your fabric  projects in no time!

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A printed template PDF will be sent to all class participants a few days prior to the workshop. Please print this out and have it available for the beginning of the session!
  • Air or Water Soluble Fabric Marking Pen – Necessary to mark flower diameter and stitching points. For our learning adventure a #2 lead pencil or fine tip marker will work too.
  • Hand Sewing Needle – Karen's favourite is a Milliner or Straw Needle - Size 11
  • Thread – Any general purpose thread in a colour that will complement your flower fabric. Karen prefers to use Aurifil 40wt thread. She likes the heavier weight and added strength of 40wt (over 50wt).
  • Sharp Scissors – Karen will be using her favourite Elan 4” Embroidery Scissors that have a serrated edge on one side. The serrated edge  helps “grip” the fabric while cutting.
  • Sharp Pins and/or Glue Baste – Karen generally pins her flower to the background fabric before securing it with thread, but you may choose to glue it in place. She recommends using water soluble glue. In the USA Roxanne Glue Baste It would be her first choice (please Google Search for similar products if living outside the USA).

OPTIONAL: Qulting or Embroidery Hoop – Some may prefer to 'hoop' their background fabric while attaching the flowers to it. Karen generally works without a hoop!

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

For the first flower you’ll use a 5” square of fabric. Karen loves to use colourful prints or grunge solids. You’ll also need a piece of background fabric 8” x 10” or larger. The background fabric can be plain (muslin) or a colourful solid that contrasts the flower fabric. You’ll be mounting the ruched flower to the background fabric.

Be prepared to make more than one flower by having additional 5” flower squares and 8” x 10” background fabrics available at your workspace.

Other requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Good lighting is always helpful while doing handwork.

OPTIONAL: A Lightbox or Window & Tape  – Some may like to transfer the markings from the template to their flower fabric by using the backlighting of a lightbox or taping the template and the fabric to a window. Karen generally just “wings it” with her markings but for this first time around you may choose to use precise markings!
