Online Interactive Workshop: Warholian Cabbages!

We're really excited to once again welcome back Nicholas Ball for more improvtastic quilting! In May 2021, Nicholas will be with us for TWO dates - Saturday 22/5 and Sunday 23/5 - running his Warholian Cabbages workshop on BOTH dates! We very much hope you'll be able to join us for either of these FOUR-hour classes!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

I sewed my first improv cabbage in 2014 as part of my Vegetable Patch quilt. At that time, it was the hardest thing I had ever made! The sewing room was a complete mess as I struggled with seams and ironed the life out of tiny pieces of fabric. I persevered and now that quilt has become one of my favourite makes and the reason why I’m an improv quilter. Since then, I’ve reinterpreted the cabbage many times and included a larger version in my book Inspiring Improv. From fabric selection to piecing the jigsaw together, making a cabbage quilt is sure to fuel your creativity and expand your improv skills!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop we’ll first take a close-up look at the vegetable itself. Remember, the aim of a cabbage quilt is not to be a photorealistic representation, but to evoke the lines, textures and colours found within. We will begin constructing the individual elements that make up the shape, using my improv triangle and slab techniques. Once we have the main parts made, we will begin piecing these shapes together. The cabbage will be shaped using background fabric and my ring technique, leaving the edges untrimmed ready for quilting.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Intermediate - Advanced:

Making a cabbage quilt provides a natural progression from some of my simpler workshops. The cabbage features three main techniques; triangles, slabs and rings. If you’ve already taken a class with me, then this workshop will help you put into practice what you have previously learnt.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for the workshop, my book Inspiring Improv (Lucky Spool 2019) will expand upon the techniques learnt and provide many more improv tips and tricks. Warholian Cabbage is one of the twelve quilt projects featured and the instructions provided will allow you to work on the quilt in your own time.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide:-

  • An assortment of fat eighths in you chosen cabbage colour, approximately 1 - 1.5m total. Look for tone-on-tone prints or anything with texture.
  • An assortment of cream/white fat eighths, approximately 1m total. Use several shades to add variation to the quilt.
  • Larger scraps in your chosen cabbage colour
  • Larger cream/white scraps
  • Background fabric - approximately 1 - 1.5m. This should be simple and not distracting. Solids work well.

Please don’t stress about these requirements!!! They are simply a guide and I’ve yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me. They don’t need to be perfectly square, so feel free to use scissors!

Using the amounts above should allow you to create a cabbage quilt approximately 40” square. Of course, each quilt will be different. As a general rule of thumb, if you want to make a larger quilt, you’ll need to make larger starter units, so this will require more fabric. If you are purchasing fabric specifically for this workshop, then my advise is to err on the side of caution and purchase a little extra. Please note however that a scrappy look works just as well, so feel free to use what you have. Remember too that these are Warholian cabbages, so you’re not limited to purple and green!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A sewing machine
  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)
  • Rotary cutter with a new blade
  • Cutting mat
  • Patchwork ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.
  • Fabric scissors
  • Fabric marker or pencil
  • Flatter spray or spray starch (optional but very useful)
  • A willingness to explore your own creativity!
