Behind The Judging Room Curtain!
Award-winning quilter and certified quilt judge, Vendulka Battais, is ready to lift the curtain on the world of quilt judging! How do you qualify? What makes a great judge? How do you score a quilt - and keep emotion out of it? And while we’re at it… what does it really feel like to win?!...
Introduction by Vendulka:-
As a frequent attendee of quilt shows and competitions, I truly enjoy seeing the creativity of others and appreciating the diverse colours, techniques, and styles they employ to express themselves. However, it also brings me sadness when I encounter individuals who believe they must possess a specific skill level to participate in competitions or lack the courage to have their work exhibited . Since winning the Best in Show Award at the Festival of Quilts in 2021, I have completed my qualifications with the Quilter’s Guild and have been fortunate enough to win several awards at various quilt competitions.
This experience provides me with a unique perspective on the subject, both as a judge and as a successful participant in quilt competitions. I would also like to demystify the word judge - as we usually connect it with critique and it makes us cringe. I didn’t become judge to have the 'right' to criticize other peoples work but rather to have the ability to see the quality and recognize what they did well, because people are more likely to see their mistakes than their achievements.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Zoom Talk:-
In this talk, I aim to clarify what judges are seeking, dispel common myths surrounding judging, and provide insights into the process. Additionally, I will emphasize the significance of competition and hopefully inspire more individuals to participate in the future. We will also explore my own award- winning quilts and discuss the qualities that make a quilt stand out as a contender for victory. You will have the ability to ask questions during the talk, and there will also be an opportunity for discussion at the end.

Who Should Attend This Online Interactive Zoom Talk?:-
This talk is designed for individuals of all skill levels who are curious about the process of judging a quilt show and also for those interested in entering a competition but are in need of some encouragement.

Intricate Curves!
We're really excited to be hosting this Intricate Curves workshop with the wonderful & hugely talented Guest Tutor, Vendulka Battais! This class will see participants tap into their creative spirit and learn how fun & creative working with curves can be!…
Introduction by Vendulka:-
In 2021 I saw the work of Sheila Frampton-Cooper at the Festival of Quilts and I fell in love with her vibrant colours and perfectly pieced curves, that seemed impossible with the methods I knew until then. And so I embarked on one of her classes to learn how to piece these intricate curves with ease and precision on small or large scale. This method was originally developed in the 90's by Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry, whose work was ground-breaking at that time.
What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-
In this workshop I will demonstrate the method how to take your own sketch with as many curves and twisted lines and how to prepare it and work with it for your textile interpretation. I’ll teach you how to make it whatever scale you would like. On my own small design I will then demonstrate and you will have the opportunity to follow me at the same time in preparing the fabrics and making those intricate curved seams.

All together, 5 fabrics - the piece we will create will be A4 size, so what you want are remnants that are min A4 size. If your fabric is larger, keep it that size, we will just use little bit in the corner. As for texture we want to work with plain or colour on colour prints, you might need one busy print for your border to bring it all together, but we will not need it on the day.
