Gary Mills - Saturday 21 November 2020 - 5.00pm to 9.00pm (GMT)

Online Interactive Workshop - Rudolph Advent Calendar

Top craft talent Gary Mills has proven to be a huge hit since joining the CraftyMonkies team and his latest offering is wonderfully festive Rudolph Advent Calendar, something that's bound to brighten up your pre-Christmas celebrations and be the talk of all who come into contact with it and the copious goodies that will doubtless lurk in each of the 25 pockets!

Introduction by Gary:

This Rudolph reindeer inspired advent calendar has been specially designed by me Gary Mills for a Crafty Monkies Christmas themed workshop. I have thoroughly enjoyed gathering some of the best ideas out there in the crafting world and incorporating them into this festive outcome. I wanted to create a project that started in our zoom workshop session, with me demonstrating and guiding you through the elements to build this calendar, to become something you would finish off in the following days leading up to December.

The main motif had to be Rudolph, of course, as it follows on with my previous Scandinavian style Christmas inspiration. A simple yet effective appliqué reindeer design using bonded fabric appliqué, with a simple zigzag stitch to achieve the centre piece of this calendar. I also have incorporated the idea of different style pockets and bags to hide little sweets and gifts, as you count your way through from the 1st of December right up to Christmas Day where you get to open your own little red Santa sack with a special treat! Little touches such as the red buttons to hold the bags from antlers and ears, a bell for his neck and some hand stitching details give this calendar a sophisticated and skilled finish anyone would be pleased to have hanging amongst their festive decorations this Christmas. You will love making it, putting all the elements together as you get into the spirit of the season.

We will take a mini rest break halfway through the session for 10 minutes to ‘pop the kettle on’ or even pour a festive glass of mulled wine. And as always, the session will be fun and relaxed and plenty of chatting with Rachel and myself. I really look forward to having you along for the session.!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The calendar to complete will take longer than the time of the workshop as the session is designed and planned to teach you how to make the outcome. The session will be divided up into the specific elements to inform and practice those which are incorporated in the design of the calendar. You will be sent the template for the design and some home work to prepare for the workshop; such as downloading the pattern and cutting out the appliqué motif, gathering your materials and cutting your background to size, cutting your pocket bags squares to size and gathering all the necessary materials and equipment ready to get started for this workshop.

The elements to achieve in the workshop are firstly position and bond the main appliqué motif and to start some of the zig zag edge stitching. Next is planning and making an example of each type of pocket; firstly, the numbers, will you hand stitch or will you cheat with pre purchased numbers? it is up to you, but we only need a few of the numbers to get started for the examples we will be making. Then you will work on a row of simple patch square pockets, then the bunting pockets and then the mini Santa sacks. I will get you to practice with me some hand stitches for your finishing.

Finally, I will talk you through the final finishing touches such as the binding and how to create the hanging rod channels on the reverse.

Advent calendar outcome measures 17” x 28”

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is for an intermediate or practiced beginner (all the skill elements are broken down into stages and Gary is a very experienced teacher who will give clear guidance or further links to help support your learning requirements). There will be Guidance Notes to support the session and aid in the finishing of the actual advent calendar after the session has ended.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Base background fabrics:

  • Either medium weight calico or similar weight cotton or linen in cream, ivory or white 17” x 28”

  • Batting / interlining 17” x 28”

  • Backing cloth cotton colour neutral 17” x 28”

For the Reindeer Appliqué:

  • Bonda-web or similar iron on fusible fabric adhesive 14” x 19”

For the Reindeer itself, you will need squares of coloured cottons measuring 12” x 12”

  • Head: Brown 12” x 12”

  • Head & Antlers: Mid brown 12” x 12”

  • Head: Christmas themed print 12” x 12”

  • Nose: Red small scrap

  • Eyes: Light fawn / cream scrap

  • Eyes and mouth: Black small scrap

  • Optional: small bell for around his neck

  • 4x red 1/8th” buttons

For the Bags, Bunting and Sacks:

Select your fabric to create the ‘Scandinavian style’, I have chosen a selection of red and white prints, block colours and ditzy dots to work together. Have a look what you have in your stash to use.

  • You will need a selection of 7 minimum size 12” x 12” minimum or you can use fat quarters

For the numbers: 1-25

In my example I have hand sewn mine with Perle thread or similar embroidery thread on to some white cotton backing which I have then cut up and stitched, alternatively you may wish to print them or even purchase small felt numbers to glue on. This needs to be decided prior to the session as you will be fixing the numbers while you make up the bags, bunting and sacks.

Haberdashery:

  • 1/8th” red ribbon x 60”

  • Machine thread: ivory / cream / brown/ black & red

  • Red coloured embroidery thread (I have used red cotton Perle thread or you can use DCM thread or similar)

For the binding and hanging channels:

Keep to a plain red if possible, so not to detract from the main design

  • Binding cut and joined on the straight grain measuring in total Length 134” x 2 ½ “wide

For hanging:

  • 2x split bamboo canes 1/8th “thick 17” long

  • Ribbon for handing 24” long

Online Monkie-Trunk Show - Quilting & Improvised Quilting

Introduction:-

Since meeting some seven-odd years ago, quilters Nicholas Ball and Trudi Wood have remained firm friends.

From the first quilt Trudi ever long-armed for Nicholas, to the stunning cover star of his book, their quilting relationship has produced some truly magical quilts. Whilst Nicholas prefers a dense, organic quilting treatment, Trudi’s own quilting style is quite different, with stunning feathers and swirls. Join us for an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at a selection of quilts from these two quilting connoisseurs. You’ll get to see never-before-seen images of some of the quilts from Nicholas’s book Inspiring Improv as he shares the stories behind their inspiration and construction. Learn how Trudi collaborated with Nicholas to quilt the quilts as she talks about the secrets behind the stitches. Be inspired as Trudi explains how to get the most from your quilting and shares some of her spectacular work. This first ever Monkie-Trunk Show promises to be a real eye-opener and will reveal a side of these quilters’ quilts that is rarely seen.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The inaugural Monkie-Trunk Show will tell you the backstory behind some of the quilts produced by Nicholas Ball and Trudi Wood. Whilst you’ll learn lots about how each one was made and quilted, as well as learning about the relationship between quilt-piecer and quilter, there isn’t a specific teaching element to the show and you won’t be expected to do any sewing yourself. This is very much a 'settle-in-with-a-nice-drink-and-listen' type of evening; a front row seat to the Monkie-Trunk Show from the comfort of your very own home thanks to the wonders of modern technology and the Zoom platform - we very much hope we'll be able to welcome you along!...

A percentage of profits from this inaugural Trunk Show will be donated to a charity chosen jointly by Trudi & Nicholas, namely The Rainbow Trust a charity that helps families with terminally ill children:-

“Never alone. We provide bespoke support for families who have a child with a serious illness. We offer the whole family support, regardless of diagnosis and are there for as long as a family needs us.”

Tickets for this Online Monkie-Trunk Show (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! The ticket price of £15.00 is based on ONE person attending this broadcast.

Gary Mills - Saturday 05 December 2020 - 10.00am-1.00pm (GMT)

Online Interactive Workshop - Christmas Wreath

This is part of a restructured two-class offering (you only have to sign up for one class, but of course we all hope you do the morning Christmas Wreath & afternoon Christmas Snowman sessions with the lovely Gary Mills!) which replaces Gary's original plan of hosting an All-Day event on this day, which would have seen participants baking a Christmas Yule Log halfway through - sadly the cakey bit is now off the menu!

Introduction by Gary:-

This wreath workshop has been specially designed by me for an incredibly special CraftyMonkies Christmas themed workshop!

For this workshop you will be expertly guided through the making of a contemporary fabric Christmas Wreath, which utilizes all those scraps of fabrics you’ve squirrelled away for a useful project….this is now that project! You will select a range of festive coloured fabrics, (I've used a mix of reds, greens, candy stripes, tartans and plaids) and I will show you how to make some large felt pom-poms and some Christmas roses from felt to add in amongst your decorative wreath, then finish with a large bow to hang the wreath either inside or out for all to admire; it is something you will want to display each year, I'm sure!

This is a workshop FULL of FESTIVE FUN for all you CraftyMonkies crafters and as always, the session will be relaxed with plenty of conversational chatter from Rachel and myself; we look forward to having you along for this creative session!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In the session you will be sent any pattern elements and asked to pre-cut the set number of squares to fill the wreath. You will be shown how to equally divide your combination of colours and consider their distribution around the wreath. Outcome measures approx. diameter 18” (46cm)

Online Interactive Trunk Show - Antique & Vintage Quilts

Following on from our first-ever Trunk Show in late November, long-time Monkie contributor Sarah Payne hosts our second such evening of chat & enlightenment with this fabulous Trunk Show, where our hugely engaging host conveys her absolute passion for quilting, especially Vintage & Antique Quilts!...

Introduction by Sarah:-

I love to travel – and I love to quilt! So I am lucky enough to be able to combine the two and visit some amazing places around the world, bringing back quilts from far flung places. This talk will give you the opportunity to take a closer look at my collection of quilts from around the world purchased on trips to India, Nepal, Canada and the USA. We will look at how they have been created, the techniques used, how the techniques have travelled from place to place, and how quilting can be a record of our own social history. We will talk about how a fabric from India was banned in the 17thbut not until after it had changed the way we dressed and decorated our homes. We will look at how traditional techniques are still used in some areas of the world to great effect and how the art of quilting is changing lives for the better. I will have my collection of modern and vintage Indian quilts as well some real antiques that I have collected on the way. The oldest one I care for at the moment has been dated to the American Civil war. With the magic to cameras I will be able to bring you closer to my quilts than you would ever get in a real trunk show because some of these objects are simply too delicate to handle. But you will get up close and personal to the quilts and their stories. You will never look at a quilt in the same way again.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Trunk Show:-

This is a talk so you will simply get to sit and enjoy the talk and view the lovely quilts while you enjoy snacks and nibbles in the comfort of your own home.

Online Interactive Workshop - Bunting: The Twelve Days Of Christmas

Introduction by Sarah:-

The Twelve Days Of Christmas has been celebrated in one fashion or another within these shores since Tudor times. The twelve days begin with the birth of Christ on the 25th December and finish with Epiphany, or Twelfth Night, on January 6th, which honors the arrival of the Three Kings or Three Wise Men (Magi) to see the baby Jesus. Advent was seen as a period of fasting – and the real festivities began on Christmas Day with feasting, parties galore and celebrations until the 6th January. This bunting is designed to honor that history – with a small pocket for a treat to mark each day until the 'end' of Christmas. And let’s face it – there's absolutely nothing wrong with another excuse to give ourselves a little more of the festive spirit!

You will learn to make this simple bunting containing pockets – you can adapt them to make advent bunting for next year if you like!

Online Interactive Workshop - Improv Quilting Shoal Sewalong

Following on from his hugely successful #improvtrianglesewalong, broadcast via Instagram in early 2020, the marvellous Nicholas Ball has teamed up with CraftyMonkies to deliver an Improv Quilting Shoal Sewalong workshop which will complement Nicholas' next sewalong, namely the: #shoalsewalong which will be airing via his Instagram channel (@quiltsfromtheattic) from early January 2021 - needless to say, we're all absolutely delighted at this collaboration!

Introduction by Nicholas:-

Since the #improvtrianglesewalong I hosted in early 2020, countless people have asked when the next one would be.

The Shoal quilt from my 2019 book Inspiring Improv (published by Lucky Spool) remains one of the most popular projects and I’ve seen some awesome versions, made in all manner of fabrics. When it came to deciding upon the theme for a second Sewalong, it was a no-brainer! I’m so excited to host the #shoalsewalong in January and banish what can often be the 'dreary grey' of the New Year with colourful fabric fish. I’m thrilled to offer this special CraftyMonkies workshop alongside the Sewalong, timed perfectly to give you all the hints and tips you need to sew your improv shoal!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

During the workshop, you take the fabric you have chosen during week one of the Sewalong and learn how to sew the fish units. I will expand upon the instructions given in both my book and the Sewalong. I’ll start by showing you the basics of my triangle and freehand curve techniques, before combining them to create unique and varied fish units. As a bonus, I’ll share how to add even more individuality to your fish, with extra fins, gills and patterned bodies. They’ll even be some seaweed!  After making the units, you’ll learn my top tips for joining them together using my jigsaw method, getting a heads-up before that part of the Sewalong. Plus, I’ll be on hand to answer any questions you may have about quilting and finishing your #shoalsewalong quilt top.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels. The triangle technique is a great introduction to sewing in a more liberated way and is sure to fuel your creativity The freehand curves will provide the beginner with a firm foundation to cutting without rulers, upon which they can expand the technique. More experienced sewers can challenge themselves with more daring curves and different shaped fish.

Material Requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for either the workshop of the Sewalong, my book Inspiring Improv (published in 2019 by Lucky Spool, available to buy via Amazon) will expand upon the techniques learnt and provide many more improv tips and tricks. My original Shoal quilt is also one of the 12 projects.

Fabric Requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide. There will be lots more information about choosing fabrics for the Sewalong when it starts in January, with videos and Instagram posts. For those of you that like to plan ahead, use the following as a guide.

FOR THE FISH - an assortment of large scraps in your chosen colours. This fabric will be used for the fish bodies and tails, so a healthy assortment of different sized rectangles and squares will work best.

FOR THE BACKGROUND - an assortment of large scraps in your chosen sea/water colours. This can either be one fabric, for a more cohesive look, or a variety for a scrappy version.

Additional scraps from your stash in coordinating colours for gills, fins and seaweed.

The more fish you make, the bigger the quilt will be. There is no right or wrong size. Remember, this is your Sewalong quilt, so make it how you want to!

Please don’t stress about any of these requirements! They are simply a GUIDE and I’ve yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me. As mentioned, they don’t need to be perfectly square, so feel free to use scissors!

This is a technique-based workshop. We will be making fish units which you will then piece into your finished #shoalsewalong quilt in your own time. Feel free to make as many or as few of the fish units as you like. Don’t feel any pressure to cut up all your precious fabric!

Equipment Requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A sewing machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

  • Rotary cutter with a new blade (especially important for the curve technique)

  • Cutting mat

  • Patchwork ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric scissors

  • A willingness to explore your own creativity

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Nicholas is truly so excited to offer this workshop as an add-on to his 2021 #shoalsewalong. He says it’s a great way to sew with like-minded people, inspire one another and see how all the fabric fish are progressing! As a thank you for booking, you’ll be offered a Discount Code which you can use to purchase one of the fabric bundles Nicholas has curated in collaboration with Crimson Tate in the USA.

Have a great festive season - we look forward to you joining us in the New Year!
