Improv Stacks & Drunken Tiles!

SOLD OUT!

Regrettably, this class is now Sold Out - full details of the class for all who have been lucky enough to secure their place are listed below!

Improv Stacks & Drunken Tiles is a workshop first run by improv-guru Nicholas Ball over a year ago, back in October 2020, but demand for us to run this class again has been really high and we're only too happy to oblige! Take it away Nicholas!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

Some years ago, longer now than I care to remember, I was so excited to have one of my quilts featured in an online e-zine. My FIRST publication! The quilt, titled Drunken Tiles, featured a technique I now call 'Stacks'. Fast-forward some seven years or so and I’m still using the same technique to make visually interesting and unique quilts. I’ve re-made the quilt many times since, even featuring it in my book Inspiring Improv, and each one has been truly unique. That’s the beauty of this technique; it’s versatile, meaning you can use it for all sorts of projects. It’s also super-speedy, perfect for that last-minute gift. It really is a great addition to your improv arsenal!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop, you will learn to take simple squares and rectangles, layer them and slice into them. You’ll learn how to put a spin on traditional four and nine patch blocks, arming you with a technique that is fast and fun, whilst stretching those improv muscles. We will start by looking at the basics of the stacks technique, before moving on to more advanced units, adding contrast and secondary areas of interest with triangles scraps, perfect for using up those leftovers from my Trio of Triangles workshop! We will explore the idea of creating a colour gradient using the technique and experiment with the way the units are arranged to add as much or as little randomness as you like.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is perfect for all skill levels. What I love most about this technique is its adaptability. From one simple technique, so many different quilts can be created. A beginner can start by making the simpler four patch units, adding more layers and cuts as they get more comfortable with the method.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for this workshop, Nicholas' book Inspiring Improv (published by Lucky Spool, 2019) will give you excellent background insight into his approach and variety of work, which you can use in your onward crafting journey.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide. Decide if you’d like to make scrappy units, or experiment with solids to create a colour gradient. Or simply bring lots of squares and try both!

For a scrappy version:

  • 48 squares, approximately 6-8”, in various prints/solids of one colour way.

  • 16 squares, approximately 6-8”, in another colour way.

  • Odd scraps of contrasting colours.

  • Extra squares of any colour or print for experimentation and spontaneity.

  • For a colour gradient:

  • 64 squares, cut from 10-12 different shades of one colour. You’ll be looking to create an ombre effect, so solids would work best.

  • The squares don’t have to be perfectly square, as long as they are all of a similar size. A layer cake or charm pack would be perfect.

Please don’t stress about these requirements! They are simply a guide and I’ve yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me. As mentioned, they don’t need to be perfectly square, so feel free to use scissors!

This is very much a 'technique-based' workshop. We will be exploring the stack technique and won’t have a finished project in mind. Feel free to make as many or as few of the units as you like. You can combine them into a sampler or continue to work on the project after the workshop by adding more units to it. Don’t feel any pressure to cut up all your precious fabric!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A sewing machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

  • Rotary cutter with a new blade

  • Cutting mat

  • Patchwork ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric scissors

  • A willingness to explore your own creativity!

Chipolata Draft Excluder!

The wonderfully talented, creative & inspiring Gary Mills returns with another fabulous workshop to get you in the festive swing! Hot off the back of his Stretch Jersey Lounge Pants class in November, Gary will WOW you with this superb Chipolata Draft Excluder workshop - an absolute 'must-have' for all homes where the winter chill creeps in under the doorframe: the ideal gift - for you or a friend/loved one!...

Introduction by Gary:-

I've really had fun coming up with this adorable little sausage dog Chipolata Draft Excluder which will put a smile on anyone’s face. 'Chippie', is completely based around my very own Sausage Dog called Chipolata; (Chippie for short, as she is a mini-Dachshund and therefore in the UK a small pork sausage is usually called a Chipolata!) What will you call yours?

In this class I will guide you through the processes from start to finish during the Zoom session, and alongside I've also produced a clear PDF pattern and instruction booklet for you to download. Once complete, you will have to find a place for Chipolata/Chipolina to sit or rest up against that draft whistling under the door; your 'Chippie', would even make a fabulous gift for someone special - did someone mention that CHRISTMAS will soon be here?!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This three-hour session is divided into two halves with a short comfort break for 10 minutes in the middle. To begin, you will be introduced to the project, and then Gary will guide you through each of the skills processes:

You will learn how to work through assembling the draft excluder, with all the relevant pattern pieces. Taking care to keep your seam allowances consistent and then trimming back to avoid any bulk. Once you have turned the figure through you will learn the best way to stuff your figure with toy stuffing, and to avoid a lumpy uneven outcome. You will be hand stitching his articulated legs and adding his facial details.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Gary has many years’ experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of textiles; his workshops are so enjoyable, fun, and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance. This workshop is suitable for the beginner, Intermediate & Advanced sewer. For those more experienced and advanced you can further hone your skills by working on improved accuracy and stitch ability to achieve a first-class professional finish.

Fabric & Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

FABRICS:

Choose your fabrics to either work with your interior of the room that Chipolata will be guarding or add a bold splash of colour, it is entirely up to you!

  • For the main body you will need 34” x 30” (87cm x 77cm) of fabric suitable fabrics are wool tweeds and similar fabrics, you can choose upholstery fabrics, cotton drill and cotton twill, canvas type fabrics and denim. You can choose a good quality cotton, it is up to you.

  • For the ears, tail, and legs 41” x 18” (104cm x 46cm) fabric as above fabrics, but you could choose more bright printed cottons to add further colour and pattern to your hound.

NOTE: Depending on your width of fabric you can always fold and turn your fabric lengthways rather than working widthways

HABERDASHERY:

Matching thread for machine and hand sewing

NOTE: You can add a coloured contrast embroidery thread to stitch the buttons on the legs to add further detail

  • For the eyes I have used 2x large 1” (2.5cm) brown buttons and 2x smaller ½” (1cm) black buttons.

  • For the legs will need 4 x 1” (2.5cm) buttons which either contrast or work with the fabric

  • For the nose I have used a small black pompom, but you can use a button or a large black bead.

  • For the collar 36” (92cm) length of 1” (2.5cm) wide ribbon

  • You will need 16oz or 500 grams of polyester toy stuffing or alternatively I have used a cheap pillow filling which works well.

NOTE: If you wish for a softer contour hugging ‘bean bag’ style draught excluder, you can substitute the body stuffing with cat litter or similar, although still use polyester stuffing for the nose and the head up to the neck.

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing-Machine straight stitches used (you can hand sew if you wish but will take you a little longer to make)

  • A general sewing box: scissors, needles, pins, tape measure

  • (Optional) Ruler or quilting square to help with marking your seam allowances

  • Tailor’s chalk or fabric marker pen

  • (Useful) Iron for pressing

  • Chopstick or similar blunt stick for stuffing

  • As mentioned above paper scissors, sticky tape, or glue stick to join pattern

Photography Skills-Boost for Social Media!

We're absolutely delighted to welcome a NEW guest tutor to the CraftyMonkies stable of talent: Australian Rachel Hill (AKA The Barefoot Crafter) joins us with a fabulous first class to kickstart her time in the spotlight - Photography Skills-Boost for Social Media, a class aimed at helping you produce great photographs of your wondrous crafting makes!...

Introduction by Rachel The Barefoot Crafter:-

Hi everyone! I’m Rachel, a crafter & photographer, and I simply love taking pretty photos of my cute makes! Instagram is a fabulous way to share our crafting adventures, but for many of us, finding a balance between spending time crafting and spending time setting up the photos to share our projects can sometimes feel like a step too far - that is, until now!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Simple Social Storytelling is all about helping to find that balance. We will look at how to set up, style, shoot and edit photos to showcase your projects and the stories behind them. Props and equipment are fun, but they not only cost money, but take up storage space – and need time to set up. It can sometimes feel like we need all the “stuff” to get good photos. In this class, I will share how you can still create great photos with limited equipment, and even less space! We will focus on using elements of your project to set up the styling, and photograph it using natural light, with the help of a couple of basic items you may have laying around the house. We will also look at editing our photos to make them pop, using free apps. There will be an opportunity to share your set up for feedback and tweaking, as well as the option to share your photo for me to edit live in class.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This class is best suited to beginners, and those who love sharing on Instagram and would like to add a little razzle-dazzle to improve their photos!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

While there are no materials needed for this class, you may like to have a project on hand to play with styling and photographing during the class. Other items you may like to have on hand:-

  • Offcuts, materials & tools from the project you are styling.

  • White cardboard for lighting practice

  • Charged mobile phone

  • Snapseed app downloaded

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

One day Janet realised that she could simply stitch her stories and so here we are: a 'Wordsmith' Memory Quilt workshop! This workshop (a repeat of the class first run by Janet in August 2020) is about noticing and cherishing the simple things in life. It’s about love letters, little notes and finding pressed flowers in favourite books. So, gather your memories and slowly piece them together with beautiful fabrics to create a lasting cloth to be treasured by generations to come!

The structure of this online interactive workshop is as follows:-

During our time together, Janet will tell you the inspiration behind her work and share some of the stories in her memory quilt, hopefully inspiring you to start creating one of your own. Every 'wordsmith' needs an alphabet or two! During this workshop we will focus on ways to transfer lettering and text to fabric and methods to stitch them such as free motion stitching, appliqué and embroidery. We will also practise Janet's ‘Quilt-As-You-Go’ method.

You will see how Janet layers techniques such as fusible appliqué, free-motion stitching, hand quilting, embroidery and quilt-as-you-go so you can begin to create unique pieces inspired by your favourite words, sayings, adages, poems or stories.

For this online interactive workshop you will need the following:-

  • A place to start - a favourite word, quote, adage or short story

  • Print out the worksheet (supplied upon signing-up for the course)

  • Sewing machine, set up for free-motion quilting (darning foot and feed dogs down)

Improv Borders!

We're delighted to welcome back improv-guru-extraordinaire Nicholas Ball in early 2022 for another of his unique improv-flavoured workshops, namely: Improv Borders! This is the first time Nicholas has hosted this class with CraftyMonkies and, based on what we know of past workshops hosted by our Welsh Wizard, tickets are bound to sell-out FAST so please don't wait until after 'mince-pie season' - if you want to be a part of the Improv Borders fun, be sure to book today!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

I’ve always loved the look of medallion quilts! I remember being awestruck when I saw an exhibition of antique Welsh flannel quilts a few years back. These nineteenth century quilts were obviously made in a time before rotary-cutters and rulers and the handwork of their construction was evident in the wonky borders and 'not-quite-matching' points. After the exhibition, I was inspired to create my own medallion quilt and used improvised piecing to create a series of borders to surround a central shape. I was inspired too by Seminole patchwork and the use of strip sets, adapting the technique to better-fit my liberated style of sewing.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop we’ll explore several different border options. The aim of the class is to see how these improvised borders can be sewn with little measuring and can easily be made longer or wider by the addition of extra fabric. We will begin by looking at simple Strip Sets and how varying the components of these sets can create a multitude of different border options. We will then look at Herringbone and Curved Borders, introducing variation through fabric selection and sashing. The class is designed to free you from precision and allow for a more organic quilt as a result. We will aim to make samples of each of the border types, which you can then add to a central unit to make a medallion quilt, or join the borders together to make a smaller project. It's going to be a lot of fun and I really hope you'll be able to join us!...

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Beginner - These techniques are a useful additional to the improv tool box and are great for adding liberated interest to your quilts. The use of strips sets and smaller scraps, without any precise cutting, makes the techniques perfect for quilters of all abilities, whether you have done improv piecing before or not.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for the workshop, my book Inspiring Improv (published by Lucky Spool, 2019) provides six improv piecing techniques which you can use to make a centre unit for your medallion project or incorporate into some of your borders.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Rather than making a finished quilt, we will be looking at the techniques used to make the borders. You may wish to use scrap fabric to practice before committing to your stash’s best.

For the Strip Set borders:-

Long strips in various widths, ranging from 1” to 4” approximately. There is no one correct size. Since it is these widths that will add the most variation to your borders, ensure you have a variety. You can use oddments from a jelly roll, or cut WOF strips from yardage or fat quarters.

For the Herringbones:-

Scraps! The width of the herringbone border is determined by the first scrap we sew, so bring along a variety. You’ll also need some narrow 3/4” strips in a contrasting or complimentary sold.

For the second herringbone technique, bring along some thinner strips, 1” to 2” wide.

There is no right or wrong size!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Sewing-Machine

Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

Rotary-Cutter (with a new blade!)

Cutting-Mat

Patchwork Ruler (we can make any size work, but a 6” x 24” and a smaller 1” x 12” are handy sizes for this class)

Fabric Scissors

Juniper Basket!

Gracing the CraftyMonkies brand once again, her first Workshop of 2022, is firm fan-favourite Svetlana Sotak, who returns to teach a class she first ran with us back in September 2020, shortly after we began our Online Interactive Workshops on Zoom - introducing once again: Juniper Basket!

On this occasion we also have a BONUS offer with this workshop, as Svetlana has kindly agreed to supply all participants with an additional FQ (fat quarter) friendly XS size as a bonus. The XS bonus pattern is FQ friendly meaning you can use FQs of fabric (as opposed to needing larger cuts) from your stash to make it!

Make a super-handy fabric basket featuring a unique, Japanese inspired drawstring closure using easily accessible sewing supplies and materials. In this class we'll learn how to add structure and stability to your basket as well as how to install and neatly finish a welted zipper pocket (either metal or nylon zipper will both work well). This basket makes a wonderful project bag, storage basket, or even a gift bag!

Subject to which size bag you are interested in making, the following materials are required for this Online Interactive Workshop with Svetlana, which will see you the proud owner of a Small or Large Juniper Basket!
