Use Your Intuition!

A New Year and a wonderful opportunity to welcome another NEW TUTOR into our fabulous crafting experience!!! We trust you'll extend a warm welcome to the lovely Victoria van der Laan, all the way from New York state in grand old U S of A - to kick off what we hope will be a series of exciting classes with CraftyMonkies going forward, Victoria strives to get us to throw off the shackles and trust our intuitive feelings to what we set out to create: here's the lady herself to tell us all about her inaugural class with us!...

Introduction by Victoria:-

Hi, folks! I'm Victoria van der Laan, a textile artist and quilter living and working in Albany, NY!

After attending an artist residency deep in the Catskill Mountains I was inspired to begin making nature-inspired work, including a piece that represented blades of grass. From there I developed my intuitive stacked forms technique and people have been asking me to offer a workshop on it ever since. The time is finally here! These are my favourite pieces to make and I'm so excited to be teaming up with CraftyMonkies to teach a class on all of the techniques involved.

As quilters we can sometimes get a bit too hung up on the rules and be obsessive about precision - I know I can! Those things absolutely have their place but it can be a great practice to take a deep breath and lead with your intuition. That's what this workshop is all about! I know this can be a bit scary but I'll be there to guide you and I am certain you will learn something new about your creative self in the process.

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop I'll bring you into my studio to share how I create my intuitive stacked forms quilts in the moment with no planning or pattern, and I'll show you how you can do the same! You can stow your rulers for this class; we'll be relying on our intuition to make the cuts required to sew curved forms that will stack up to create a beautiful, organic work of art. We'll begin the workshop with some very rough sketching to get our creative intuition flowing and to give us some ideas for what we might like to create. From there we will get to work cutting and sewing, building methodically from the bottom up to add to our stacks of pointed, curved forms that almost-but-not-quite touch, creating that lovely vibrational space between.

Though I will guide you in the creation of a small wall-hanging, this is really more of a techniques class in which you will learn the skillset required to incorporate organic, curved design elements into your own quilts. I'll share some of the ways you might expand on this technique as well as talk about quilting and finishing options. I really hope to empower you to trust your intuition and see what beauty comes of it both in your creative pursuits and beyond. Once you get the hang of it you'll see that this is a simple technique that, once you're comfortable with it, will allow you to make many more similar quilts (every one unique!) and can open up lots of new design possibilities for your quilts.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is appropriate for the confident beginner and up. The adaptable nature of the technique allows for curves to be kept gentle if desired, making it a wonderful introduction to curved piecing.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

It's not imperative to have these exact lengths of fabric but around a half yard/metre for the background and 16 inches/41cms for the forms is a good size to work with when learning. The key is that you want the piece of fabric you're using for the forms to be less wide than the piece of fabric you're using for the background. I prefer solids but prints are fine, too! I will go over fabric/color choice in the workshop so feel free to bring some options. Please make sure your fabrics are fully pressed and ready to go--it will make the process much easier!

  • One half yard/half metre length (width of the bolt) of quilting cotton for the background

  • One 16 inch/41cm length (width of the bolt) of quilting cotton for the forms

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing Machine

  • Rotary Cutter (with a sharp blade!)

  • Cutting Mat: at least 20 inches/51cm wide (or at least as wide as your background fabric)

  • Sewing Gauge with sliding marker or small clear Acrylic Ruler (a regular school ruler can work, too)

  • Fabric Marking Pen or Tailor's Chalk (if you're using very dark fabric be sure you have something that will show up)

  • Straight Pins

  • Thread to match the background fabric

  • Iron

  • Paper and Pencil

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Optional - Starch alternative spray, like Flatter or Best Press

Online Interactive Workshop

Mr Fox Appliqué!

Introduction by Gary:-

In 2020 my first workshop with CraftyMonkies was an extremely popular & successful session entitled ‘Waggle Tails’ the Hound appliqué! Now in 2023 I'm introducing the adorable ‘Mr Fox Appliqué design in this TWO-hour workshop!

This workshop is very much a ‘skills-bomb’ of processes for you to learn! I've tailored this project for all to enjoy learning a mixture of creative textile skills. You will begin the session firstly by transferring the supplied image onto cloth, next how to use heat bonded adhesive for securing the appliqué pieces; I will then guide you through using free motion embroidery to add an artistic sketched stitched line to bring your appliqué to life. The workshop is a great start to get to grips with these addictive skilled processes; you will even learn some hand-tinting with colour to finish off your outcome!

This class is full of little cheats and 'how-to' tips to get the best results from both yourself and your sewing-machine. Your 'Mr Fox’ creation could simply be framed, but would make a great panel for a quilt or even a cushion centre - I will happily discuss with you any ideas that come up through this workshop!...

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

To begin you will be introduced to the project, and then Gary will guide you through each of the skills processes. You will learn how to transfer the image, how to cut and then bond onto fabric small pattern pieces to build the image. Prepare the fabric for free-motion embroidery and apply stitches to further secure but also add a defining line to the image which is then tinted with hand paints to add a unique hand-crafted finish to your work.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Gary has many years’ experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of textiles; his workshops are so enjoyable, fun and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance. This workshop is suitable for all; if you are a beginner this is a great project to learn and understand the processes of bonded appliqué with addition of free motion stitching for decoration. For those more experienced and advanced you can further hone your skills by working on improved accuracy and artistic ability to achieve a first-class professional finish.

Log Cabin Blocks!

Our first listing for a class in 2023! We're delighted to be kicking off our 2023 offer with this Log Cabin Block workshop with the wonderfully effervescent, engaging & hugely talented Nicholas Ball! This class will see participants embrace their 'inner-improv' creativity and work towards producing some visually stunning & mentally therapeutic results: be sure to join us & Nicholas - you'll be amazed at what you create!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

The Log Cabin is instantly recognisable as one of the most classic and ubiquitous patchwork blocks. When I started quilting way back when, I always liked the idea of making a traditional version, yet all the cutting and precision put me off! If you feel the same and want to try a quick and fun approach to this most beloved of blocks, then this version is perfect!...

Join me in my liberated log cabin workshop where we’ll use organic piecing to put an improv spin on this versatile block. We’ll look at how to use chain piecing to sped up the process, how to add interest with angular cuts, half square triangle starters and blind bag pulling, as well as a stacked version that’ll give you more blocks in less time, perfect for when you need a quick finish!

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

During our exploration of Log Cabins, we will look at some of the many different ways this sometimes daunting technique can be approached to create unique and exciting blocks.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide.

For the basic log cabin units, a large variety of strips in solid and print fabric, plus an assortment of smaller scraps to add interest. Feel free to cut your pieces from yardage or use jelly roll pre-cuts. If cutting from yardage, use an assortment of widths, from 1” to 3”. For the half square triangle starters, rough squares approximately 3-4” in a variety of fabrics.

For the stacked log cabin starters, approximately 10-12” squares of 6-8 different print or solid fabrics.

Please don’t stress about these requirements. They are simply a guide and I’ve yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me. They also needn’t be perfectly square or straight, so feel free to use scissors!

This is very much a 'technique-based' workshop! We will be exploring log cabins and won’t have finished project in mind.  Feel free to make as many or as few of the units as you like. You can combine them into a sampler or continue to work on the project after the workshop by adding more units to it. Don’t feel any pressure to cut up all your precious fabric

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing-Machine

  • Good quality Thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (Nicholas recommends Aurifil 50wt)

  • Rotary Cutter - with a new Blade!

  • Cutting-Mat

  • Patchwork Ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square).

  • Fabric Scissors

  • A Bag or Small Box

  • A willingness to free your mind & explore your own creativity!

Online Interactive Talk

Feed Sacks!

As well as hosting educational and interactive classes here on our Zoom platform, our desire has always been to provide you with some very interesting Online Talks from some great experts in their crafting fields. The online talks give you a chance to grab a glass of wine or cup of tea, sit back and relax as our experts talk about their areas of expertise or their passions. As always you will be able to ask your questions and be very much involved in the Talks; it's almost as if you were all in one room, but of course the beauty is that you don't have to leave your house or jump on a plane! Simply buy a ticket, press a button, sit back and reeeeeeeelax!...

For our first talk of 2023 we're absolutely thrilled to welcome Linzee McCray author of Feed Sacks: The Colourful History of a Frugal Fabric, to the CraftyMonkies spotlight alongside CraftyMonkies regular and Feed Sack 'afficionado' Chris English for what promises to be an interesting insight into Feed Sacks and their many uses... This 'class' costs only £15 for a couple of hours and we think this will be exceptional value and a thoroughly enjoyable evening!...

Linzee McCray has this to say:-

"Hi CraftyMonkies! I'm so honoured and excited to be working alongside Chris (I've been a fan of his for some time) and have the opportunity to chat to you about Feed Sacks. Some of you may say, "what are they?!" I have talked at length across America on this subject and of course have written the above mentioned book, so I love them! People always find the history of them and their uses fascinating. I'm really hoping to teach you something new and inspire you on the night! Also looking forward to chatting to you too and taking your questions. It will be a wonderful evening!

Here's a brief insight. Long before “sustainability” was a household word, people reused the fabric bags that once held everything from animal feed and seed to sugar and flour to ballots, hams, and even laxatives. Based on my book Feed Sacks: The Colourful History of a Frugal Fabric, I’ll share both the beauty of feed sacks and their importance in the social and economic history of the times in which they were made and used.

The lecture features historic photos, vintage advertising, and fabric patterns, as well as actual sacks and the clothing, quilts, and other items made from them. It is of interest to lovers of fashion, textiles and design, historians, quilters, and those with an interest in sustainability. So please do come along. I'll be teaching too later in the year with CraftyMonkies, so it's a great way for us to get to know each other!"

Chris English has this to say:-

"I first spoke to Rachel about my love of Feed Sacks during the in-person Sewing Retreat at Oulton Hall in Leeds, in September 2022. She had never heard of them and was fascinated the more I told her about them. Janet Clare was also at that dinner and said that she knew a lady, Linzee McCray, quite well and perhaps she could put her in contact with Rachel to organise an online chat. The rest is history as they say and here we are together, and I'm super excited. I actually knew of Linzee as I bought her book some time ago and I absolutely love it, it's a thing of beauty you must have a look at it!

I probably didn’t realise when I first saw a quilt made from feed sack fabric, I think I just saw this amazing fabric and loved it and thought where is this fabric from. As I’ve increased my understanding of feed sacks and what they were and how they are used so has my usage of them in my quilts. I have a couple of super helpful quilt dealers in the US who keep an eye out for me for feed sack orphan blocks and for actual feed sacks. I particularly love the more utilitarian ones with the distinctive branding on and now use these as whole pieces in my quilts.

Using Feed Sacks fabric has also challenged me to use other types of fabric in my quilt and not limit myself to ‘quilting’ fabric, it’s amazing and super forward thinking that these fabrics were designed to be used for something after their initial purpose had been served. And I think is a lesson that we could learn from today, i.e. designing for sustainability. So will you come and join us? We really do hope so!..."

It would be wonderful to have your support: if the talks we are providing prove popular, we here at CraftyMonkies will aim to provide many more for you! We look forward to seeing you on 29 January 2023!...

Tickets for this Online Interactive Talk (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

Improv Triangles!

We're absolutely delighted to welcome Nicholas Ball back under the CraftyMonkies spotlight for a repeat of his Improv Triangles workshop, which last run with CraftyMonkies in May 2022, to coincide with his Improv Triangle Sewalong on Instagram during January and February 2023. If any of you missed this class last time, or indeed are new to CraftyMonkies, please don't wait to book your place - any class taught by Nicholas tends to sell-out rather quickly!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

I’m so pleased to be able to offer a companion workshop to the Improv Triangle Sewalong I’m hosting on Instagram in 2023.  If you’re new to improv piecing, or want a little extra tuition during the sewalong, then this is the class for you.

What I love most about my Improv Triangles technique is the versatility of the units created. This simple shape has so many uses in improvised patchwork and is a great skill to add to your improv arsenal. Where some people see trees, others see gnome hats! You can use the familiarity of triangles to suggest all sorts things in your compositions. After you make a few you’ll soon find the only limit is your imagination!...

What you will learn on this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You'll learn how to throw off the dreaded 'shackles of constraint' and let your inner-creative run wild with this fabulous technique-based improv-quilting class! In the workshop you will first learn Nicholas' basic method for creating improv triangle units. We’ll then look at adding variation to these units using inserts. Finally, a quick and easy stacked triangle method will be explored, giving you three different way to use triangles. We will also discuss fabric choice and the different ways to arrange your sewn units into a finished composition.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This class is suitable for all skill levels. It’s perfect for competent sewers who want to explore more liberated piecing, perhaps as a change from traditional quilting, but it’s also a perfect improv introduction for quilters who are just starting out and have little quilting experience.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for the workshop, Nicholas's book Inspiring Improv (published by Lucky Spool, 2019) will expand upon the techniques learnt and provide many more improv tips and tricks. Improv Triangles is one of the six techniques featured and detailed instructions for piecing irregular shaped units together are also included.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide.  Remember, Nicholas will be discussing fabric requirements in more detail during the first week of the sewalong.

For the basic triangles, large scraps of solid and print fabric in square-ish and rectangle-ish pieces work well for the background, whilst smaller scraps are perfect for the triangles. Feel free to cut your pieces from yardage. The background pieces shouldn’t be smaller than approximately 4” for your first attempt at this technique.

For the insert triangles, the same sized background pieces as the basic triangles can be used. For the triangles, strips of approximately 1.5” - 2.5”. These need not be full width of fabric, so feel free to use what you have.

Finally, for the stacked triangles, an assortment of squares, anything from 5” to as large as you want! As the name suggests we will be cutting through stacks of fabric, so as long as your prices are all roughly the same size, anything will work. A layer cake or charm pack would be perfect.

Please don’t stress about these requirements!!! They are simply a guide and Nicholas has yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using these techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with Nicholas. They also needn’t be perfectly square or straight, so feel free to use scissors!

This is very much a technique-based workshop. We will be exploring triangles and won’t have a finished project in mind. Feel free to make as many or as few of the units as you like. You can combine them into a sampler or continue to work on the project after the workshop by adding more units to it during the sewalong. Don’t feel any pressure to cut up all your precious fabric!!!
