Colourful Pineapples!

The hugely talented Lucy Engels joins us once again in early April! Hot off the back of her excellent Modern Appliqué Techniques workshop at the end of March, this time Lucy has another hugely engaging project, one which helps explode the myth that FPP is absolutely essential for creating pineapple blocks - find out how Lucy does it via her wonderful Colourful Pineapples workshop!

Introduction by Lucy:-

Pineapple Blocks are one of those quilting blocks that people feel they need to work up to and that they need to be Foundation Paper Pieced. Well, you don’t and they don’t!!!

Pineapple blocks are intense yes, but have so much potential for colour play and placement that you will wonder why you waited so long to make one! They have to be one of the most satisfying quilt blocks to make. I really hope you'll join me for this three-hour class and see for yourselves!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This is a machine-sewing class. Using a controlled improv approach we will be constructing pineapple blocks WITHOUT using paper piecing! You will learn not only how to construct this block but how colour placement within the block can change the overall appearance. During the class you will be encouraged to experiment, play with colour and learn how to take a more relaxed approach to constructing the traditional Pineapple block.

Sardines In A Tin!

We're really excited to be hosting this wonderful Sardines In A Tin workshop with the hugely talented/engaging designer/tutor, Gary Mills! This class is quite a departure from most we've run recently, but we're absolutely convinced you're going to love all it brings to your sense of joy & creativity!...

Introduction by Gary:-

I have really had fun coming up with this adorable idea which will put a smile on anyone’s face! These playful sardines tucked up in their little bed, all squashed in, reminds me of my childhood with my siblings all jumping into one bed with our array of teddies, plus the family dog wanting to join us to. The idea came from the initial empty sardine tin and what could I use it for? So of course, it had to become a bed; I have considered a mattress, a miniature stuffed pillow, an embroidered blanket and three very cute little sardines with little happy faces and fishy tails!

I will guide you through the processes from start to finish during the zoom session, and alongside I have also produced a clear PDF pattern for you to download, included in the cost of this workshop.

Once complete you will have to find a place for your gorgeous sardines to sit and be viewed; maybe that's on your desk at home or work or on a windowsill, he/they would even make a fabulous gift for someone special!

Please note: The outcome is a Decorative Model or Set of Figures, rather than a toy.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This three-hour session is divided into two halves with a short comfort break for 10 minutes in the middle. To begin you will be introduced to the project, and then Gary will guide you through each of the skills processes:

You will learn how to work through assembling the bed mattress, the pillow and blanket with all the relevant pattern pieces. Taking care to keep your machine stitched seam allowances consistent and then trimming back to avoid any bulk. Once you have made the bed you can start making the little sardines which are each turned through, carefully stuffed and hand stitched closed. You will be hand stitching the eyes and decorating the boarder of the blanket along with suggest phrases and words you may wish to accompany the outcome.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Gary has many years’ experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of textiles; his workshops are so enjoyable, fun, and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance. This workshop is suitable for the beginner, Intermediate & Advanced sewer. For those more experienced and advanced you can further hone your skills by working on improved accuracy and stitch ability to achieve a first-class professional finish.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

1 x clean empty sardine tin with the lid removed. Measures inches 4 ¼ long x 2 ½ wide x 1 ¼ deep (or cm 10.5 x 6 x 3) try to keep near to this size for the pattern to fit although different brands of sardine tins may vary slightly.

VERY IMPORTANT!: All surrounding sharp edges where the lid has been pulled off should be lightly sanded with some glass paper or a nail emery-board.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The fabrics I have used for this workshop have come from my scrap bin and fabric stash; it really does not take much fabric to complete this project. Below is a suggestion of fabrics that can be used if similar weights and weave are kept to you can adjust to what ever you have.

  • 4oz 50g of polyester stuffing (toy or pillow stuffing is fine)

  • For 3 sardines bodies cotton in grey, silver or blue 5” x 12” (13cm x 30cm)

  • Sardine tails I’ve used some coloured organizer but felt will also work very well

  • Mattress I have used a red and cream printed cotton (anything similar) 10” x 3” (8cm x 25cm)

  • Blanket is in beige linen 3” x 8” (8cm x 20cm)

  • Pillow white cotton 6” x 4” (15cm x 8cm)

  • Sewing machine threads to match fabrics to be stitched.

  • For decorative stitches I have used a pink Perle thread for the blanket boarder and black French knots for the sardine’s eyes. DCM thread can be used also.

  • Optional: You may also wish to add some words to the blanket. I have used a child’s simple printing set to print on calico and then cut and stitched to the blanket. Phrases to consider:

  • “3 in a bed”, “Squashed in like sardines”, “Roll-over”.

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Print off pattern (A4 to fit no boarders). Please cut out all pattern pieces prior to the start of the workshop.

  • Seam allowance will be ¼” or ½ cm.

  • Straight Stitch size 2 – 2.5

  • Needle size 12

  • Please have filled bobbins and threads ready for the start of the session.

  • NOTE: Please check that your sewing machine is working well; therefore, do run off some stitches on a scrap of fabric prior to the start of the session.

More Walking Foot Quilting!

We're really excited to be hosting this skills-based workshop with the wonderful & hugely talented Lucy Brennan! This Saturday afternoon class will see participants engage in really getting to grips with their Walking Foot techniques, hence the name: More Walking Foot Quilting!

Introduction by Lucy:-

Walking Foot quilting is very straightforward (pun intended!), but you can also create more complex designs with lines, curves and templates! In this class you will learn how to build on simple patterns, explore various ways of marking/using a guide and even have a go at quilting your own designs. I will lead you through each step to create samplers of different designs and achieve the confidence and understanding to tackle an all too common question: "How should I quilt this?!"...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • How to prepare and mark designs

  • More advanced walking foot quilt patterns

  • Explore all over quilting designs as well as individual/block designs

  • How to securely start and finish your stitching

  • Tips for perfect stitches

  • As well as what to avoid!

  • Build your own designs

  • How to create visual interest and texture.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Suitable for those with previous walking foot quilting experience.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Eight 16” x 16” wadding squares (preferably low loft quilt wadding)

If you have any quilt projects or blocks that you would like to quilt please bring them to class and we can look at how you could quilt them!

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Eight 16” x 16” fabric squares - we will be quilting on this fabric so ideally a solid colour or simple pattern would work best.

  • Eight 16” x 16”backing fabric squares

These will be used to make square quilt ‘sandwiches’ for quilting the patterns on (backing fabric, wadding, quilt top fabric).

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • General sewing kit

  • Quilt Ruler for marking - ideally with 45 and 60 degree angles marked on it.

  • A4 (or letter size) piece of thin card or paper, pencil and paper scissors

  • Machine needle suitable for quilting

  • Water soluble marking pen or quilting pencil or chalk

  • Hera marker (optional)

  • A selection of quilting threads, in your choice of colours (you can also use different weights of cotton thread for some designs)

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

N/A

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In preparation for the class please baste the 8 squares, I recommend spray basting with 505 spray, but please use your preferred method!

Then quilt the following using 4 of the quilt squares in preparation for adding more quilting to them in class:-

  • On one quilt square quilt a diamond cross hatch with straight lines 1 ½” apart (use the 60 degree line on your ruler)

  • On two of the quilt squares quilt a diamond cross hatch with straight lines 2” apart

  • On one quilt square quilt a grid with straight lines 2 ½” apart

I will briefly cover this in class but if you can have the squares partially quilted it will save time and means you can quilt the full designs with me. The remaining squares we will quilt in class and if for any reason you are unable to quilt those squares before the class do not worry, you can still join in!

Should you have any questions please email us via hello@craftymonkies.com.

The lovely Trudi Wood joins us once again and in this workshop you will mix a variety of stitches to create a unique & frankly quite marvellous Lavender Girl Notebook Cover!

Introduction by Trudi-

With Spring in the air and the sunshine peaking out more, let's take time to mix a little slow stitching with a speedy Notebook Cover. We will cover a few basic embroidery stitches, on top of fusible appliqué to make our Lavender Girl. Then using that piece of work, we will earn how to measure any book or diary and make a bespoke cover for it. Once you know the technique you can embellish to suit both its purpose or make it for a friend, colleague or family member as a personalised gift. Make your diary or notebook reflect you or the person it is for so it brings joy every time it is used.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Sewing & Quilting:
Improv Rings

Learn Improv Quilting Rings technique with master improv-guru, Nicholas Ball!

Saturday 24 April 2021

4.00pm - 7.00pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop

Improv Quilting Rings

Regrettably, tickets for this three-hour class (and the repeated class on Sunday 25 April) have now SOLD OUT!

Below is the course info, video and photo reference for those who have secured a place on either date:-

We're delighted to welcome back a veritable Jedi-Master of improv-quilting, Nicholas Ball, for the first of TWO repeated classes this weekend! We kick-off Nicholas' two day improv-fest on Saturday 24th April (4.00-7.00pm, BST) and, for those who can't make Saturday's class for whatever reason, the class is REPEATED on Sunday 25th April, also between 4.00-7.00pm, BST! The class Nicholas will repeat on these two days? His renowned Improv Rings Technique!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

I was first inspired to use this technique when I made my Vegetable Patch quilt, specifically the leek block! I wanted a way to show the concentric lines found within leeks without using curved piecing or appliqué. After much trial and error, I learnt that this 'ring' technique is extremely versatile and a useful improv tool. It can add real dynamism to your patchwork and is perfectly suited to the organic subject matter I find so inspiring: I very much hope you'll join me once again!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Nicholas' Ring technique gives the illusion of curves using straight seams. During this workshop you will learn the fundamentals of the technique. We’ll first look at how to prepare and cut your fabric ready for piecing. Next, we’ll explore some of the many ways this technique can be used. Nicholas will show you how to start simple, with wide, angular rings, before moving on to demonstrate how to scale down the pieces, increase the angles and multiple the cuts to create near-perfect circles. You’ll be shown how this technique works brilliantly to add shape to other piecing techniques and how it can be used to edge or frame patchwork. The best way to stitch, press and trim the patchwork will be explored in detail. Like all Nicholas' techniques, once you’ve grasped the basics, the only limit is your imagination!

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is ideal for sewists who have some experience of Nicholas' style of piecing and perhaps have taken one of his simpler classes. Whilst not difficult, the ring technique evolves to use small pieces, with lots of trimming and pressing, and is not a technique suited for a fast finish.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for the workshop, Nicholas' book Inspiring Improv (Published by Lucky Spool, 2019) will expand upon the techniques learnt and provide many more improv tips and tricks.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide:-

  • An assortment of square and rectangular scraps in your chosen colours for “starters”. These can be any size, though avoid anything smaller than 3” square.

  • An assortment of various width strips for the rings, though nothing narrower than 1”. These can either be cut from yardage or you can use more scraps! WOF strips or jelly roll leftovers work well.

Please don’t stress about these requirements! They are simply a guide and Nicholas has yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me. They don’t need to be perfectly square, so feel free to use scissors!

This is very much a TECHNIQUE-based workshop, with no finished project in mind. We will be making units which you will then piece into a finished quilt/project in your own time or use as a sample of the technique. Feel free to make as many or as few blocks as you like. You can also make a single, larger unit and turn it into a cushion cover, pouch or bag. There is no right or wrong size!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A sewing machine

  • A walking foot (optional)

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

  • Rotary cutter with a new blade

  • Cutting mat

  • Patchwork ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric scissors

  • Fabric marker or pencil

  • A willingness to explore your own creativity!

Whilst a new sewing-machine needle is always a good idea, consider using a topstitch or microtex needle for this technique. As we explore narrower rings, the seams allowances overlap, so a sharper needle type will help to pierce these layers more easily.

Improv Quilting Rings

Regrettably, tickets for this three-hour class (and the repeated class on Saturday 24 April) have now SOLD OUT!

Below is the course info, video and photo reference for those who have secured a place on either date:-

We're delighted to welcome back a veritable Jedi-Master of improv-quilting, Nicholas Ball, for the second of TWO repeated classes this weekend! The first of Nicholas' two day improv-fest started on Saturday 24th April (4.00-7.00pm, BST) and, for those who couldn't make Saturday's class for whatever reason, the class is REPEATED today, Sunday 25th April, also between 4.00-7.00pm, BST!

Triaxial Weaving

The wonderful Judith Hollies will be joining us once again at the end of April; in this three-hour workshop Judith will help you get to grips with Weaving Fabric Strips (Triaxial Weaving)showcasing this excellent skill via no fewer than three examples!

Introduction by Judith:-

There are many ways to weave fabric strips together to create a range of designs, from the humble basket weave (weaving on 2 axis) to the more complex triaxial weave (weaving on 3 axis). By varying the widths of the strips and order of the weave, you can achieve a variety of striking woven designs which can then be made into beautiful handbags, cushions, baskets, purses and more! This is a really fun technique with dramatic results! The main part of this workshop will be concentrating on the Triaxal Weave which has an amazing three dimensional effect. Your completed panel is just the right size to make a Just Jude Designs Woven Basket so after your workshop you can use the bonus FREE pattern, included with your booking! The Wefty Needle is not essential for this class (a large safety pin works too) but it does make life a lot easier, especially for your hands. These are now in stock in my online shop (www.justjude-designs.com)!

I first designed my Triaxial Woven Basket as a class sample when I introduced weaving to my students 2 years ago. Of course I had to learn how to do it myself first! That took a lot of practice, and I focussed first on the Tumbling Blocks Pattern, but it was so exciting seeing the secondary patterns appear with each layer of strips. We started with the simpler Basket Weave (2 axis) before progressing to the more advanced Triaxial Weave (3 axis). My students were awestruck at their amazing results!

Concentration is needed each step of the way, but it really is a fun technique with dramatic and satisfying results! Choosing 3 fabrics that will contrast well with each other is key to achieving the Tumbling Blocks effect that we will be learning on the workshop!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

At this workshop you will:

  • Watch a demo on the simple basket and houndstooth weaves

  • Learn how to prep your foam foundation for weaving

  • Learn how to make a Triaxial woven panel

  • Learn how to ready your woven panel for use in another project

Intermediate/Advanced - you will have a good understanding of fabric contrasts, cutting and prepping fabric. You will also be able to accurately follow pattern steps, counting and sequencing.

Icons In Stitch!

We're delighted to welcome back the wonderful & hugely talented Gary Mills once again! Not wanting to mention any names (see if you can spot the cultural icon in the pics accompanying this class!), this evening workshop session will see participants engage in needlework & appliqué to create a historic figure and a veritable Icon In Stitch!...

Introduction by Gary:-

Meet my film icon in stitch! This appliqué, designed by me, introduces this recognised iconic female actress and performer of the 'silver screen', captured in this on-trend appliqué and stitched 2D textile in a three-hour workshop.

This workshop is very much a ‘skills bomb’ of processes for you to learn. I have tailored this project for all to enjoy learning a mixture of creative textile skills. You will begin the session firstly by transferring the supplied image onto cloth, next how to use heat bonded adhesive for securing the appliqué pieces; I will then guide you through using both straight and free motion embroidery to add an artistic sketched stitched line to bring your appliqué to life. The workshop is a great start to get to grips with these addictive skilled processes; you will even learn some hand-tinting with colour to finish off your outcome! This class is full of little cheats and 'how-to' tips to get the best results from both yourself and your sewing-machine.

Your finished outcome could be simply framed but would make a great panel for a quilt or even a cushion or bag front - I will discuss with you any ideas that come up through this workshop!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This three-hour session is divided into two halves with a short comfort break for 10 minutes in the middle. To begin you will be introduced to the project, and then I will guide you through each of the skills processes:-

You will learn how to transfer the image, firstly work upon the face, which is hand tinted with water colour paints, then how to cut and then bond onto fabric with additional small pattern pieces to build the image. Prepare the fabric for straight and free-motion embroidery and apply stitches to further secure but also add a unique hand-crafted finish to your work.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Gary has many years’ experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of textiles; his workshops are so enjoyable, fun, and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance. This workshop is suitable for all; if you are a beginner this is a great project to learn and understand the processes of bonded appliqué with addition of free motion stitching for decoration. For those more experienced and advanced you can further hone your skills by working on improved accuracy and artistic ability to achieve a first-class professional finish.

Strings is my latest pattern, released in April 2021. Dipping back to the 80’s and 90’s dance scene for inspiration, this quilt represents a pounding base line! Full of clashing colour and striking stripes (Strings) it allows whoever makes it to dance with a bold colour palette. Making a striking mini, wall quilt or if you are brave enough, a throw. This quilt can be made using traditional piecing or foundation paper piecing and I'm sure you're going to love making it!...

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Paper fabric is readily available and there are a number of different brands.

I used and recommend Kraft-tex. This can be found on sites like Amazon or through independent shops. Do look around as prices and sizes vary. Sample packs are available but they are not large enough to make the bags and are not necessarily the best value. Here are some UK online shops selling Kraft-tex or similar products:-

Warholian Cabbages!

We're really excited to once again welcome back Nicholas Ball for more improvtastic quilting! In May 2021, Nicholas will be with us for TWO dates - Saturday 22/5 and Sunday 23/5 - running his Warholian Cabbages workshop on BOTH dates! We very much hope you'll be able to join us for either of these FOUR-hour classes!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

I sewed my first improv cabbage in 2014 as part of my Vegetable Patch quilt. At that time, it was the hardest thing I had ever made! The sewing room was a complete mess as I struggled with seams and ironed the life out of tiny pieces of fabric. I persevered and now that quilt has become one of my favourite makes and the reason why I’m an improv quilter. Since then, I’ve reinterpreted the cabbage many times and included a larger version in my book Inspiring Improv. From fabric selection to piecing the jigsaw together, making a cabbage quilt is sure to fuel your creativity and expand your improv skills!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop we’ll first take a close-up look at the vegetable itself. Remember, the aim of a cabbage quilt is not to be a photorealistic representation, but to evoke the lines, textures and colours found within. We will begin constructing the individual elements that make up the shape, using my improv triangle and slab techniques. Once we have the main parts made, we will begin piecing these shapes together. The cabbage will be shaped using background fabric and my ring technique, leaving the edges untrimmed ready for quilting.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Intermediate - Advanced: Making a cabbage quilt provides a natural progression from some of my simpler workshops. The cabbage features three main techniques; triangles, slabs and rings. If you’ve already taken a class with me, then this workshop will help you put into practice what you have previously learnt.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for the workshop, my book Inspiring Improv (published by Lucky Spool, 2019) will expand upon the techniques learnt and provide many more improv tips and tricks. Warholian Cabbage is one of the twelve quilt projects featured and the instructions provided will allow you to work on the quilt in your own time.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide:-

  • An assortment of fat eighths in you chosen cabbage colour, approximately 1 - 1.5m total. Look for tone-on-tone prints or anything with texture.

  • An assortment of cream/white fat eighths, approximately 1m total. Use several shades to add variation to the quilt.

  • Larger scraps in your chosen cabbage colour

  • Larger cream/white scraps

  • Background fabric - approximately 1 - 1.5m. This should be simple and not distracting. Solids work well.

Please don’t stress about these requirements!!! They are simply a guide and I’ve yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me. They don’t need to be perfectly square, so feel free to use scissors!

Using the amounts above should allow you to create a cabbage quilt approximately 40” square. Of course, each quilt will be different. As a general rule of thumb, if you want to make a larger quilt, you’ll need to make larger starter units, so this will require more fabric. If you are purchasing fabric specifically for this workshop, then my advise is to err on the side of caution and purchase a little extra. Please note however that a scrappy look works just as well, so feel free to use what you have. Remember too that these are Warholian cabbages, so you’re not limited to purple and green!

Equipment requirements relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A sewing machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

  • Rotary cutter with a new blade

  • Cutting mat

  • Patchwork ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric scissors

  • Fabric marker or pencil

  • Flatter spray or spray starch (optional but very useful)

  • A willingness to explore your own creativity!
