Memory Quilt!

The wonderful, warm & engaging Janet Clare has often wished she'd kept a diary or an art journal but after many attempts had to admit that she was just not that sort! And yet, she still really wanted to remember and record our ordinary days. After all, what you do every day is more important than what you do once in a blue moon!

One day Janet realised that she could simply stitch her stories and so here we are: a 'Wordsmith' Memory Quilt workshop! This workshop (a repeat of the class first run by Janet in August 2020) is about noticing and cherishing the simple things in life. It’s about love letters, little notes and finding pressed flowers in favourite books. So, gather your memories and slowly piece them together with beautiful fabrics to create a lasting cloth to be treasured by generations to come!

The structure of this online interactive workshop is as follows:-

During our time together, Janet will tell you the inspiration behind her work and share some of the stories in her memory quilt, hopefully inspiring you to start creating one of your own. Every 'wordsmith' needs an alphabet or two! During this workshop we will focus on ways to transfer lettering and text to fabric and methods to stitch them such as free motion stitching, appliqué and embroidery. We will also practise Janet's ‘Quilt-As-You-Go’ method.

You will see how Janet layers techniques such as fusible appliqué, free-motion stitching, hand quilting, embroidery and quilt-as-you-go so you can begin to create unique pieces inspired by your favourite words, sayings, adages, poems or stories.

For this online interactive workshop you will need the following:-

  • A place to start - a favourite word, quote, adage or short story

  • Print out the worksheet (supplied upon signing-up for the course)

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing machine, set up for free-motion quilting (darning foot and feed dogs down)

  • A selection of sewing threads (preferably polyester for machine drawing)

  • Basic sewing kit

  • Embroidery thread

  • Free motion practice- calico and wadding pieces A4ish

  • Fusible web

  • Pencil and paper

  • Carbon paper (if you have it - you can just watch the short demo if not)

  • Stitch ‘n’ tear (if you have it - you can just watch the short demo if not)

  • Washable/removable fabric marker

  • ‘Quilt as you go’ - four x 9 inch fabric squares, two x 8 inch wadding squares

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

Stitched Doodles Journal!

We're delighted to announce that our multi-talented craft/design guru Gary Mills is returning early in the New Year with another trio of connected, 90-minute, workshops! In line with his previous Creative Sketchbook Series of classes that proved so popular in 2021, but putting our pens, pencils & crayons aside for the time being, Gary's three-part Stitched Doodles Journal project embraces Sewing & Mixed-Media and will run from 7.00-8.30pm (GMT) on Wednesday 26 January, Wednesday 16 February and Wednesday 16 March 2022 - participants can book via just one ticket which encompasses all 3 x classes, which should make it much easier to book. Anyone not able to attend one or more of the classes will receive a link to the video recording soon after the class has first aired. This promises to be another treat series of classes and a 'must' for all who've previously enjoyed Gary's past Creative Sketchbook series - we can't wait to welcome you aboard for this trio!...

Introduction by Gary:-

Have you always wanted to feel more confident and freer to play with exploring simple stitches and imagery within a journal format? This is a project in three consecutive workshop sessions designed by me, Gary Mills, that can help develop creative ability in anyone. In this latest edition to my hugely successful and popular “Creative Sketch Book” series of workshops, the natural progression had to lead to this; doodle and “draw” with just stitches. I have created a journal of explorations and responses with only a needle, thread, and some fabric.

Within this workshop you will not only practically make this beautiful cloth journal but, guided over the next three sessions, you will discover that hand-stitching is becoming one of the new key meditative and relaxing pastimes to calm our minds in a world which, at times, can seem really unsettling and stressful.

It is amazing how much pleasure can be had from slowing down, picking up a needle and thread and simply sewing, be that just taking a simple running stitch on a journey across some cloth, or playing with one shape and seeing how many combinations you can create on a theme. Try mixing media with additions of found papers and some paint upon the cloth you sew.

This will become a lovely past time of mindful stitching, the practice has connections to sustainability, simplicity, preserving memories and reflection.

IMPORTANT: You do not have had to have taken part in any previous Creative Sketchbook series, to enjoy and get something form this set of new workshops! This new, exciting and engaging project has been specifically designed to be accessed by everyone and it's for all abilities: for all of you who admire stitch, who would like to learn and have a go, and those who enjoy stitch but would like to become a little 'freer' and more open to some new ideas!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Session ONE - Wednesday 26 January 2022:

To begin you will make a decorative cloth journal cover, which is easily made through bonding, layering, and securing found fabrics with some simple hand stitches. Here memories can be laid down as you could use pieces from past garments and snippets of previously worked fabrics; even papers in combination to form a simple patchwork outer cover.

After this first session you have a month to continue to stitch and work into your journal cover as you then prepare for the second session.

Session TWO - Wednesday 16 February 2022:

In this second session you will progress the project through exercises to add pages of hand stitch skills through the exploration of ideas and engaging playful creative tasks. Taking the simple running stitch, you will be going on a guided “walk” across your first page of the journal. A session of playful doodles is explored through threading, interweaving, and trapping down stitches. Consider negative space and doodled spirals in contrast to thickness of threads. Then as your imagination expands consider creating simple drawn forms in stitches upon prepared painted and collaged cloth for a mixed media concept. This session will leave you with a plentiful menu of easy to expand upon ideas to fill another month of playful stitching until we meet again for the third session of the project.

Session THREE - Wednesday 16 March 2022:

In this final session of the current series, you will explore just one simple shape, the square, and apply playful creative stitched ideas to that. You will mask and paint and stich on cloth, you will bond fabric and stitch across blocks, you will tumble and topple squares and stitch upon them. You will even join, splice, and frame your square. At the end of this session, you will have several pages of creative ideas to add to your journal to inspire and continue your creative journey in stitched doodles.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Gary has many years’ experience as a professional practitioner and teacher of art & textiles. His workshops are so enjoyable, rewarding, fun, and very well organised with his clear and patient guidance. This workshop is suitable for all; if you are a beginner this is a great way to learn and explore the rudiments of stitch within art-based textiles and design processes and for those with some confidence and experience you could further diversify your approaches to hand sewing through your artistic ability and imagination.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

All the materials are easily accessible. Such as found and recycled fabrics, papers and paints which can be sourced from your own scrap and stash collection or local shops or online and most other materials can be found around your sewing box. You will need for these workshops:-

Session ONE - The Journal Cover

  • For the outer cover you will need 1x 12 ½ “x 9 ½” (32cm x 24cm) of interlining batting / bumph. I use a synthetic one, but you can use cotton or wool

  • I x sheet of fabric heat transfer adhesive (Bonda web or similar) 12 ½ “x 9 ½” (32cm x 24cm)

  • A selection of square and rectangle pieces from past garments and snippets of previously worked fabrics, even papers. Sizes can vary as these will be layered upon the adhesive and fixed onto the interlining, but approx. 5” x 3” (13cm x 8cm) and smaller

  • Important: For the top layer of your journal to initially trap down all your layered pieces and then hand stitch into, you will need some cream or white fine nylon tulle net, or you can use synthetic organza or silk organza. Size 13 ½ “x 10 ½” (34cm x 24cm)

  • For the inner cover 1 x rectangle measuring 12 ½ “x 9 ½” (32cm x 27cm) of neutral medium weight fabric such as a biscuit / beige colour linen for the inner. You can also use cottons and other found or recycled fabrics which can be joined to create the desired rectangle measurements.

  • For the ties of the journal 32” of cotton tape or ribbon ¼ “wide (consider the colour with your chosen outer fabric)

  • Threads: for construction a matching or natural tone colour hand or machine sewing thread

  • For decorative stitches DCM embroidery thread or cotton Perle thread a couple of colours (think about a good contrast colour which will stand out or compliment your chosen cover fabrics and papers.)

Session TWO:

  • 1x 5 ½” x 8 ¼“(14cm x 21cm) white or cream felt or boiled wool / wool flannel

  • 2x 5 ½” x 8 ¼“(14cm x 21cm) white or cream calico or linen pre painted and dried with some cream acrylic paint or house hold emulsion

  • Scraps of printed newspaper or old book papers

  • Black DCM embroidery thread or cotton Perle thread

  • Black fine hand sewing thread or even machine thread

  • Masking tape

  • A little blue acrylic paint small brush or sponge applicator

  • 3-4 x 5 ½” x 8 ¼ “(14cm x 21cm) biscuit or beige colour calico or linen

  • A selection of square and rectangle pieces from past garments 2” x 2” (5cm x 5cm)

  • Blue DCM embroidery thread or cotton Perle thread

  • Orange DCM embroidery thread or cotton Perle thread

  • A selection of square and rectangle pieces from past garments

  • Blue fine hand sewing thread or even machine thread

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Items, that can usually be found in your general sewing-box, are as follows:-

  • Pins

  • Fabric Shears or Rotary-Cutting Blade

  • Cutting Mat

  • A selection of different sized Hand Needles from fine to those with a larger eye for threading thicker thread.

  • A Ruler or Grading Ruler for squaring up and cutting squares.

  • An Iron, Ironing Mat or Board and baking parchment to protect your work when you press.

  • A Fabric Pen/Marker (I use one which disappears with heat, but any similar will do)

  • A Hairdryer to hand when speed-drying is required

  • PVA Fabric Glue (I do also use an ordinary glue stick such as Pritt Stick as well)

Optional: You can use a sewing machine for making the journal cover if you wish but hand stitches work just as well.

Quilted Postcards!

We're delighted to announce a first class of 2022 for another of our 'improv-gurus', Chris English, who'll be guiding you through a fabulously uplifting & inspirational workshop entitled Quilted Postcards - tell us more Chris!...

Introduction by Chris:-

Who doesn’t love getting exciting mail in the post?! Surprise your friends by posting them a quilted postcard. Bust your scraps and make a series of quilted postcards that you can send to your 'quilty' friends across the world! We’ll learn a couple of different piecing techniques and quilting ideas before creating several beautiful postcards ready to send.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop we’ll explore a mix of improv piecing and cutting techniques. We’ll start by creating a traditional patchwork but then ‘hack’ into it to create visual interest and movement. Quilting wise we’ll explore some machine-quilting & hand-quilting techniques and I’ll share my approach to quilting; this is the class to try out all those different threads you have but have never been sure where to use them, this is that time!

We’ll see how the two different techniques can work together and create beautiful 'quilty' textures. We’ll then look at how we make the card, how to best prep it for its journey and also consider different shapes and size cards. Finally by combining all of these techniques we’ll produce a set of quilted postcards, that are ready for you to send and connect with fellow 'quilty' folks around the world.

The class is designed to let you experiment and maybe take your first steps in improv in a super fun and informal environment. Also, this class is perfect if you want to try out some different quilting techniques on some smaller scale pieces. I’d love it if you could join us to learn how to create these cards and to make some new global quilt pals!

Curled Feather Quilting!

A New Year, another NEW Tutor! To say we're absolutely thrilled to welcome the wonderfully talented & delightful Karen Miller of Redbird Quilt Co fame into the CraftyMonkies fold is an understatement! In this, Karen's first-ever class with 'the Monkies', you'll be focused on quilting motifs with her excellent free-motion Curled Feather Quilting class - take it away, Karen!...

Introduction by Karen:-

Are you comfortable with meandering or looping around your quilt top, but find yourself intimidated when it comes to stitching out more advanced quilting motifs? When I began free-motion quilting with my home sewing-machine, my goal was to have my completed quilts appear as though they had been finished by a longarm quilter. In my mind that meant I MUST LEARN to quilt feathers!! My first full feather quilt was both a challenge and a joy as I used 3 borders to practice my feathers and grow my skills. Once comfortable with stitching feathers along a wavy spine I was ready to add more interest to my feathers – Voila! – the curled feather! I’m excited to share the process with you – it’s straight forward and simple – believe me when I say: "We can do this together!"...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this 3 hour workshop we’ll learn the skills necessary to stitch a free motion curled feather. We’ll begin by reviewing a few basics of home machine quilting and quickly dive into the fun of feathers. We’ll learn feather structure and I’ll share a few simple guidelines for positioning feather plumes along a spine. Before you know it we’ll be applying all we’ve learned to stitching a delightful curled feather. To wrap it up we’ll review a variety of ways to apply the curled feather to your quilt tops.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is applicable to a beginner that is comfortable with dropping the feed dogs and stitching out simple designs. We’ll have you stitching a curled feather in no time!! I encourage you to learn and practice your curled feathers on large fabric scraps - the learning process is less stressful this way.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Paper & Pencil - To practice drawing feathers before we stitch them

  • Air or Water Soluble Fabric Marking Pen - Since we’re working on practice pieces a #2 lead pencil will work too.

  • New Machine Needle - My favorite is the Superior Titanium Coated Topstitch Needle size 90/14

  • Thread - Any general purpose weight like 40wt or 50wt in a color that will complement your fabric. Use the finest thread weight to wind a bobbin. My favorite thread is Aurifil 100% cotton. I’ll be stitching with the heavier 28wt Aurifil - It shows nicely via ZOOM – I’ll have 50wt in the bobbin!

  • Quilting Gloves (optional) - My favourite are Machingers Gloves by Quilters Touch. I purchase them in size X-Small so there is no excess in my fingertips.

  • Teflon Slider for machine bed (optional) - My favorite is the Supreme Slider by LaPierre. This gadget helps your fabric slide across your machine bed with ease.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Light coloured solid fabrics 15 – 20” square. Muslin will work fine. I generally use a print fabric on the back of my quilts but for this workshop you can use the same fabric on top and back.

  • Batting of your choice – my favourite is 100% wool batting. Cotton or cotton blend is fine too. I would avoid using a 100% poly batting during the workshop.

  • Prepare 2 quilt sandwiches roughly 15” to 20” square.

  • Baste using the method of your choice - I prefer to pin baste!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing-Machine with darning, embroidery or free-motion quilting foot. If you have an extension table or cabinet for your machine now is a perfect time to use it!!

  • Ensure you clean & service your machine prior to the workshop – be sure to remove all the dust bunnies in and under the bobbin area. Oil if applicable.

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

A Curled Feather template with instructions AND a free-motion quilting basics handout are provided as a PDF download with purchase of the workshop. Please print-off beforehand and have available during the workshop!

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

If you are a longarm quilter looking to learn to quilt a Curled Feather, this workshop would be beneficial to you as well!

Participants who sign up for these 3 x workshops on Saturday 5th, Saturday 12th and Saturday 19th February 2022 (all will take place between 10.00-11.30am, GMT) will crochet along with Rachel, using her supplied pattern, the end result being that you will make a Rainbow Wave Crochet Blanket - this really is a marvellous mini-series of classes, full of colour & cheer, to blow away the winter gloom and they fit in perfectly with our theme of mindfulness running throughout February. We really hope you'll join us!...

Introduction by Rachel:-

In 2015, my two crafty 'besties' and I wanted to start a new crochet blanket, but couldn’t find a pattern we all liked – so we made our own! It remains one of my most popular projects on Instagram, and is a great pattern to really build and hone your crochet skills: I really hope you'll join me over the 3 x Saturday mornings (morning in the UK, that is!) in February 2022!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Using the pattern I developed with my friends (this pattern provided as part of the £50.00 mini-series class fee), we will go through each step of making a crochet blanket. We’ll chat about choosing yarn, both type and colour, and then look at different methods of starting. From there, we will learn a mix of different crochet stitches, and how to increase and decrease. With these skills under your belt, you’ll be able to tackle more complex projects in the future with confidence!

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This blanket is best suited to the adventurous beginner and upwards. It helps if you can at least chain and DC, but it’s not required - with three separate sessions, I will be able to help you with all your crochet questions! We will have plenty of time to answer questions and crochet along together, with lots of chat in-between!

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Preferred yarn (I used Stylecraft Special DK for the sample blanket)

  • Crochet hook to suit your chosen yarn (I used a 4.5mm clover soft touch hook)

  • Project journal (if you are a note-taker)!

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The pattern for this class is a self-developed pattern, and will be provided to all participants via email in the week before the first class.

IMPORTANT:-

Anyone not able to attend all three workshops in the series 'live' will be provided with a recording of that particular class, so if you do have to miss one or more for some unforeseen reason, worry not - we've got you covered!
