Improv Triangles!

Regrettably, the TWO June dates for this workshop are now SOLD OUT!

Below is the class information relevant to all those who have secured their place on the Improv Triangles workshop, taking place on Friday 25 June 2021 (6.00-9.00pm, BST):-

We're absolutely delighted to welcome Nicholas Ball into the CraftyMonkies spotlight once again and have no doubt that you'll absolutely love his Improv Triangles workshop, a class we first ran back in August 2020!

Introduction by Nicholas:-

What I love most about my Triangle technique is the versatility of the units created. This simple shape has so many uses in improvised patchwork and is a great skill to add to your improv arsenal. Where some people see trees, others see gnome hats! You can use the familiarity of triangles to suggest all sorts things in your compositions. After you make a few you’ll soon find the only limit is your imagination!...

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You'll learn how to throw off the dreaded 'shackles of constraint' and let your inner-creative run wild with this fabulous technique-based improv-quilting class! In the workshop you will first learn Nicholas' basic method for creating improv triangle units. We’ll then look at adding variation to these units using inserts. Finally, a quick and easy stacked triangle method will be explored, giving you three different way to use triangles. We will also discuss fabric choice and the different ways to arrange your sewn units into a finished composition.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Beginner to Intermediate - This workshop is suitable for anybody interested in learning about improv quilting. The sewing This class is suitable for all skill levels. It’s perfect for competent sewers who want to explore more liberated piecing, perhaps as a change from traditional quilting, but it’s also a perfect improv introduction for quilters who are just starting out and have little quilting experience.

Material/Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide:-

For the basic triangles, large scraps of solid and print fabric in square-ish and rectangle-ish pieces work well for the background, whilst smaller scraps are perfect for the triangles. Feel free to cut your pieces from yardage. The background pieces shouldn’t be smaller than approximately 4” for your first attempt at this technique.

For the insert triangles, the same sized background pieces as the basic triangles can be used. For the triangles, strips of approximately 1.5” - 2.5”. These need not be full width of fabric, so feel free to use what you have.

Finally, for the stacked triangles, an assortment of squares and triangles, anything from 5” to as large as you want! As the name suggests, we will be cutting through stacks of fabric, so as long as your prices are all roughly the same size, anything will work. A layer cake or charm pack would be perfect.

Please don’t stress about these requirements!!! They are simply a guide and Nicholas has yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using these techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with Nicholas. They also needn’t be perfectly square or straight, so feel free to use scissors!

This is very much a Technique-based workshop. We will be exploring triangles and won’t have a finished project in mind. Feel free to make as many or as few of the units as you like. You can combine them into a sampler or continue to work on the project after the workshop by adding more units to it. Don’t feel any pressure to cut up all your precious fabric!!!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing-Machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (Nicholas recommends Aurifil)

  • Rotary Cutter - with a new blade!

  • Cutting Mat

  • Patchwork Ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Most important of all - a willingness to explore your own creativity! It's going to be FUN!!!...

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

The ticket price of £30.00 is based on ONE person attending this crafting class.

Birds On Stilts

Renowned as a truly multi-talented crafter, we're delighted Gary Mills will be joining us in mid-summer for another of his fabulous decorative model projects, namely his Birds On Stilts workshop!...

Introduction by Gary:-

I have really had fun coming up with this adorable idea for a decorative model which will put a smile on anyone’s face! Imagine these playful birds could be fishing along the tideline or just standing around and having a good old gossip with one another. I will guide you through the processes from start to finish during the Zoom session, and alongside I have also produced a clear PDF pattern for you to download included in the cost of this workshop. Once complete you will have to find a place for them to sit and be viewed; maybe that is on your desk at home or work or on a windowsill or would even make for a fabulous gift for someone special.

IMPORTANT: The outcome is a decorative model or set of bird figures, rather than a toy!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This three-hour session is divided into two halves with a short comfort break for 10 minutes in the middle. To begin you will be introduced to the project, and then Gary will guide you through each of the skills processes: You will learn how to work through assembling the birds, cutting out from the supplied pattern, and then constructing through simple machine stitch with stage-by-stage instruction taking care to keep your machine stitched seam allowances consistent. Then turning through and stuffing your bird and then trimming back to avoid any bulk. finally adding the details to give him or her character through stitch and decoration.

This finished bird is approx 16” (40cm) in height.

  • OPTIONAL: Gary has painted his kabab sticks with acrylic paint to match with the contrast colours in each bird.

NOTE: Once you have been shown how to make one bird you should have time to make more so have additional fabrics and materials to use.

The bird/s can be displayed on several surfaces such as a piece of found wood, a branch or drift work; it will even look good fixed into a potted house plant! You may wish to have this with you in the session or you can display later once you have made all the birds you wish to display.

Flying Geese

In this class, the second of her two Speedy Technique skill-building workshops running in June & July, the multi-talented Sarah Payne will be teaching you a fabulous quilt block technique: Flying Geese!

Introduction to Flying Geese by Sarah:-

I am a big fan of Speedy Patchwork Techniques. If you have a pattern that requires a lot of a particular blocks then the quicker you can make them the better. For this skills-building class I will be introducing you to a number of different ways to create Flying Geese – one of the most used & popular blocks in patchwork!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Sarah will show you several different ways of making Flying Geese and a few design variations. She will demonstrate each method and then show you how to change the sizes of block that you need to make. She will outline the strengths and weaknesses of each method, and help you choose which method suits your needs for a given project. Sarah will also cover design options for Flying Geese projects including how to use them for borders.

This is a technique class rather than a project class, so you will mostly be watching the class rather than sewing so bring along a notebook and pen. You can choose to make one of the sets of Flying Geese, or just watch. Sarah will supply you with a 'cheat sheet' with the measurements after the class!

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Beginners and those looking to improve.

We're absolutely thrilled to welcome a NEW guest tutor to the CraftyMonkies family - the absolutely wonderful Melissa Averinos will be joining us all the way from the USA to host this workshop entitled Making Faces!

Melissa is an artist and quilter. She is the maker of My Brother’s Jeans (Best In Show at QuiltCon 2016) and Face #1 (Judge’s Choice QuiltCon 2015) and has designed fabric for Free Spirit, Andover, Hoffman and Wilmington Prints. Melissa is the author of several craft books, her most recent on the face collage technique you’ll learn in this class (Making Faces In Fabric, C&T Publishing/Stash Books, 2018). We extend a warm welcome to Melissa and will let her tell you all about her inaugural workshop with us - take it away, Melissa!...

IMPORTANT:

This class is the first of TWO Making Faces workshops (the content in both classes is identical) Melissa is hosting

on Saturday 17 July and Sunday 18 July 2021 (3.00-7.00pm, BST)

Introduction by Melissa-

I can’t wait to hang out with you all! Do you have any cats? I love cats!...

I’m a quilter and I love to sew, but I think of myself primarily as a painter. I’ve been actively making work since my early teens and had always focused on faces. As I progressed in my quilting life, it was only natural that I get into making faces in fabric. Join me - I guarantee, you can totally do it!

My teaching approach is lighthearted, fun and inclusive. I create a nurturing environment for people to let go of their preconceived ideas about whether they are artists or not, to create with a childlike joy and release any need to do things ‘perfectly’. Also I will probably ask you to show your cats in our Zoom!...

Join me in this fun and liberating class and we’ll make some great faces - together!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You will be thrilled with finally learning how to draw a decent face! That’s right, we start with drawing, but don’t panic - I make it EASY! You can totally do it, you probably have just never learned the simple things you need to get right. In our class you will learn this first thing! Here’s how it will go down:-

  • First up, a drawing lesson with a simple formula on the proportions of the face

  • Next, an EASY-to-understand lesson on drawing facial features!

  • Then we move on to play time with fabric, where I cover:

  • Fabric selection

  • Adhesive options

  • Laying out the “markers of the face” so you get the proportions right (now that you know them from the drawing lesson!)

  • Variations of easy shapes to create facial features and hair

  • Troubleshooting

  • The benefits of working in multiples

  • Then I will talk about next steps for you to take with your work after class. (There is no sewing in this class because our time together is much better spent helping you get the faces down!). I will cover:-

  • Benefits and drawbacks of different stabilizers

  • Basic tips for how to stitch your collage, including thread color choice

  • Examples/inspiration of different ways/styles of stitching a collage and how they change the look of the piece

  • Show and tell of examples of face collages to inspire you and show a range of takes on the technique

  • Examples and suggestions for ways to use your collage panel after it’s stitched

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Beginner to Experienced quilters who are interested in exploring an art quilting technique presented in a modern way

Beginner to Experienced art quilters looking to take on faces!

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Background and Collage fabrics can be in any colors you like - they do not need to be realistic, portrait-type colors!

  • they should be solids and/or very small scale prints

  • if they are prints, they should be low contrast, subtle tonal prints, or ‘blender’ fabrics*

  • the idea here is that we don‘t want to be distracted by large, busy or contrasting prints

  • if wrinkly fabric is going to annoy you, press in advance or have your iron and pressing surface accessible during class

BACKGROUND Fabric:

  • You will need 4 x Fat-Quarters of quilting cotton

  • This is the fabric we will collage the faces onto (so don’t bring your Precious for this!)

  • Bring 2 light colours: one medium and one dark!

COLLAGE Fabrics:

  • Assorted scraps in a range of sizes (you might use a one-inch piece on an eye or a an 8”x2” piece on the hair)

  • As above, these should be low-contrast, small scale prints or solids

  • Include lights, mediums and darks

  • Include white and black

  • If you aren’t a scrap saver, don’t worry! Just bring some Fat-Quarters that you don't mind cutting into!

* If this is stressing you out and you don’t understand what I mean, please definitely DO NOT FRET over it! Just bring a good variety of solids and all will be well!

Other Supplies/Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Plain White printer paper - at least 20 sheets (yes: printer paper, not a notebook or a sketchbook - trust me!)

  • Regular pencil

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Small Scissors (like embroidery scissors) if you have them

  • Elmer’s Washable glue stick (or similar)

  • Optional: Tweezers

Here is a little pep-talk from me to you!:-

I know faces can be intimidating, but believe me when I say "YOU CAN TOTALLY DO THIS!!!" I show you super simple tricks that anyone can use to make a face in fabric!

I love Raw-Edge Appliqué because it’s fast (compared to piecing) and it’s so forgiving! Don’t like what you did? Add some fabric on top. Like I always say about painting, if you don’t like it you can just put more over it and then you have the extra benefit of all that excellent texture! This class is about making faces the way YOU make faces, which you will discover as you go! I’ll teach you the basic framework and then I will encourage you to let go of expectations and just PLAY (and show me your wonderful cats!)...

Seasonal & Happy Theme Embroidery Hoops!

We're delighted to welcome back Lucy Brennan once again; on this date, Lucy will be running a REPEAT of a workshop first aired on the CraftyMonkies Zoom platform back on Saturday 3rd October 2020, namely her Seasonal & Happy Theme Embroidery Hoops!...

Introduction by Lucy:-

Enjoy this relaxing class, learn a variety of embroidery stitches and create a beautiful sampler! Perfect for a sweet decorative touch to your home or to give as a gift! You will be provided with two of my original designs - Seasonal Leaves and Happy. This class is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some embroidery experience. Inspired by a song, the Seasonal Leaves sampler design is a nice reminder of the changing of seasons - make it your own using different colours or opt for a natural palette, the choice is yours!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A variety of different embroidery stitches

  • How to use stitches for outlining and filling designs

  • Different ways to stitch text neatly and legibly

  • How to finish the hoop ready for hanging

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Suitable for ALL levels!...

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Woven Fusible Stabiliser (optional, same size as cotton fabric)

  • Embroidery Hoop size for Seasonal Leaves - Size 7” hoop

  • Embroidery Hoop size - Size 6” hoop for a large Happy

  • Embroidery Hoop size - Size 4” hoop for a small Happy

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Cotton Fabric - at least a 12” square. A plain, pale fabric will work best as it is easier to trace the design.

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Water soluble pen or pencil

  • Embroidery thread or perle cotton (or a combination) - you will need a selection of colours

  • Embroidery Needle

  • Scissors

  • Thimble (optional)

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The embroidery designs will be emailed out to everyone before the class.

PLEASE NOTE: You could scale the patterns up or down when printing to a size that fits the hoops you have!

Sizing Guide relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

N/A

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

If you have time, please trace the Seasonal Leaves design onto fabric in preparation for the class. Leave plenty of space around the design to fit into the hoop. You can use a lightbox or window to help see the design, use a fine pencil or water soluble pen. Do not worry about tracing all the lines, as long as you have the basic outline shapes of the leaves and the text.

IMPORTANT! If you are fusing woven interfacing to the fabric use a pencil rather than a water soluble pen to trace the design! Once traced you can fuse the interfacing to the back of the fabric.

Should you have any questions, please email the CraftyMonkies team via hello@craftymonkies.com.

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern and other information, relevant to this course will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.
