Lucy Brennan - Friday 18 September 2020 - 6.00pm - 9.00pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop: English Paper Piecing

Create an English Paper Pieced Embellished Pouch using Lucy Brennan’s ‘A Piece of Me Pouch’ pattern, with the easiest way to sew a zip and neatly finished binding. Lucy will show you all the steps to create a beautiful EPP geometric panel, how to add an EPP Dresden flower appliqué motif, and a demonstration full of tips on how to turn it into a super cute quilted pouch!

This project is suitable for EVERYONE: from beginners, those with a fear of sewing zips, and anyone that loves quick, fun makes! This pouch pattern was born from a classic ‘measure twice and cut once’ mistake whilst making a bag. Not wanting the gorgeous fabric and her quilting to go to waste, Lucy decided to use as much of the panel as she could and ended up discovering a simple way to sew a zip, making two zipper pouches from her ‘mistake’ and creating a pattern!

The ‘A Piece of Me Pouch' name came to be after finding it makes such a difference to use prints, things that bring a smile and mean something in her work. Lucy made another version of the pouch by embroidering lyrics onto it, in remembrance of a friend. When she sees the words it brings back great memories. We encourage you to do the same, whether it be for yourself or for a gift; make the pouch personal by using fabric you especially like and shapes or flowers that have a special meaning for you.

The pattern is adaptable, you can create different sized versions easily using the same steps, just start with smaller or larger panels. Perfect as a make-up bag, stationery case or handbag catch all. Choose different epp shapes or the ones listed below, Lucy will cover everything you need to get perfect points and neat curves! If you are new to EPP don’t worry, all the basics will be covered and the class is packed full of tips so you will be confidently stitching shapes and making your own zip pouch.

For this Online Interactive Workshop you will need the following:-

  • EPP paper shapes - 1” inch hexies or similar. You can use any connecting geometric shape, such as triangles or diamonds.

  • Dresden Flower papers - Lucy used 5” Dresden 8 petal papers from Sew & Quilt

  • Recommended suppliers of English Paper Pieces: Sew & Quilt (UK), Paper Pieces (USA), Tales of Cloth (Australia)

  • Fine hand sewing needle - Lucy uses a size 11 Milliners/Straw needle.

  • Cotton thread - a fine thread works best, such as Aurifil 50 weight, but use what you have.

  • Scissors

  • Pins

  • Fabric Glue Pen (optional)

To complete the pouch on this online interactive workshop you will need *:-

  • 1 fat quarter for outer fabric (or a selection of fabrics for EPP, see below)

  • 1 fat quarter for lining fabric

  • 1 fat quarter of fusible foam (alternatively use fusible fleece or wadding)

  • 25” of bias binding (2.25” wide)

  • Zip at least 11” long

  • Sewing Machine with a Walking Foot (if you have one).

  • Finished size of pouch approximately 10.5" x 7"

The dimensions can be altered to make different sized pouches, you may need slightly less fabric and shorter length zip and binding depending on the size you wish to make. This will be covered in the class.

* IMPORTANT

You will be supplied with the pattern to make the pouch; as the class involves hand sewing you will probably NOT complete the whole project in the three hours and that is fine. Slow sewing is encouraged! You will be given all the instructions you need to finish the pouch, should you choose to ultimately make something else with the EPP you create, that is totally fine as well!

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern, or other information, relevant to this workshop will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

The ticket price of £25.00 is based on ONE person attending this workshop.

Online Interactive Workshop: Scrappy Elephant Fun Cushion

This striking Scrappy Elephant Fun Cushion is one of Sarah Payne's most recognisable cushion designs and she is delighted to be sharing it with the CraftyMonkies. This fun cushion is a great stash-buster and you can go as wacky as you like with your fabric choices. You can choose to embellish your elephant with embroidery stitches included on your sewing machine to truly create a unique character.

This cute little cushion can be as scrappy as you like and makes a great gift. The design uses 2 ½ inch strips, but you can make the strips narrower if that is what you have! Just have fun playing!

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop are as follows:-

  • This toy can be made from scraps or from left over bits of jelly roll (10 strips will be plenty) and 4 fat quarters will give you a nice selection, or a carrier bag of scraps.

  • 40cms of light or medium weight sew-in interface

  • Matching buttons for eyes

  • Bag of toy stuffing

  • No pre-cutting required!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop are as follows:-

  • Sewing threads in neutral colours (Cream, Ecru, Greys – bring what you have!) and coloured swing machine threads for embroidery stitches.

  • Rotary Cutter (45mm rotary cutter is the best size) and mat (18” x 24 approx so a fat ¼ fits on it easily) – please check that the cutting blade is sharp.

  • Optional – Craft Iron and Ironing Mat

Janet Clare - Friday 25 September 2020 - 6.00pm - 9.00pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop: Penguin Appliqué Picture

The lovely Janet Clare returns once again to deliver another wondrously cute creation - her Penguin Appliqué Picture (perfect and in plenty of time for you to get started with a Christmas-themed creation don't you think?!)

Janet says she just looooooves Winter! Crisp frosty mornings and clear star-filled nights. Cosy woolly jumpers, hot chocolate by open fires and long evenings just made for sewing, help to make this her favourite season of all. With this Penguin Appliqué Picture Worskhop, you can create and arrange your own cheerful 'penguin-huddle' on a quick and simple appliqué picture!

We’ll start by learning how to draw with our Sewing-Machines; if you’ve done it before then more practice is always a good idea! After that we’ll learn or practice how to do Fusible Appliqué before piecing a simple landscape for our penguins to live in.

We’ll then appliqué and stitch our huddles, add hand-quilting details and discuss picture finishing techniques.

Preparation for this Online Interactive Workshop is as follows:-

  • As well as having a basic sewing kit to hand, set up your sewing-machine for free-motion stitching. Check your instruction booklet but for most machines you will need to lower the feed dogs and add a darning foot. Your machine will be happier free-motion stitching if it has a new needle. Did you know you are supposed to replace the needle after every five hours of sewing? Load with a dark thread, preferably polyester as it is stronger and more forgiving when doing free-motion. Janet typically uses grey Gutermann polyester sew-all thread, colour code 702.

  • Have an iron nearby, you will need this during the workshop!

  • Gather your fabrics and supplies – see 'Material requirements' below – and print the Templates (these will be supplied via email shortly after people have booked their place).

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop are as follows:-

  • Plain fabric and wadding (about A4 size) plus fabric scraps to practice fusible appliqué and free-motion stitching

  • For the picture background, two different pieces of 10 ½” x 3”fabric – Janet chose a striped and patterned pale grey.

  • For the penguins:

    • 5”x 3” piece of cream/white fabric for the tummies and 9”x 3”piece of black fabric for the bodies

    • 10”x 5”piece of wadding

  • 36”x 2 ½”piece of co-ordinating fabric for binding

  • Fusible web for appliqué

  • Neutral and black sewing thread

  • White quilting thread

  • A4 mount board, glue lines and frame (optional - this is how Janet mounted it!)

Janet Clare - Saturday 26 September 2020 - 10.00am - 1.00pm & 2.00pm - 5.00pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop: Artisan Apron

The lovely Janet Clare joins us once again with another inspiring (and wonderfully practical!) project for you set a whole day aside for!

Teaching Points covered in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Basic Dressmaking - straight seams, curved seams, darts, lined pockets, setting pockets into side seams, clipping curves, bagging out (adding a lining), pressing, topstitching and finishing.

Janet's Artisan Apron: The Story Behind This Project

When she had two small(ish) boys and worked from home, Janet often found herself getting distracted by all the chores and housework and not really getting much work (designing and sewing) done. After much thinking she realised that if she had a uniform to wear she would feel and look like I was actually at work and not at home! Great thinking, Janet!

Hence, the Artisan Apron was born and it is so lovely and pale and special that I’m not tempted to clean the house, cook or brush the dog instead of working because I don't want to spoil my pinny! As time has gone on Janet has added embroidered sayings and motto's such as 'She believed she could and so she did', badges and bits of lace and buttons and now when she puts on her apron in the morning she feels creative, inspired and ready for work! Janet's apron also gives her courage when she has daunting things to do, such as monthly live TV shows or standing up to talk to a huge group (like you CraftyMonkies!).

Janet's apron has become more than a uniform for her: it is her signature garment, a comfort. She feels like her whenever she wears it. Putting her apron on helps Janet begin her creative process. And when she takes it off, she knows her work is done for the day and it's time to relax.

Janet's Artisan Apron: Pattern

Is inspired by a vintage pinny and has curved seams, big pockets and a cross-over back. The pattern includes seven sizes ranging from small to 4XL and its loose fit makes it comfortable to wear. And it’s not that tricky to make either.

  • Small - UK dress measurements - Size 10

  • 4XL - UK dress measurements - Size 32

Participants who don’t already have Janet's pattern - the cost is £11.99, excluding P&P - MUST BUY IT IN ADVANCE of the workshop from Janet's online Etsy shop (please ensure you allow enough time for delivery ahead of the class!) via the following link: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/184039707/artisan-apron-pattern-make-and-embellish

See the PDF (below) for Janet's supplied Requirements for this class - please note that fabric is required for the Apron Outer AND also the Apron Lining, so the fabric requirements have to be effectively double,  as can be seen by the example given for the 3XL size at the bottom of the table.

Janet's Artisan Apron: The Fit

The fit is always hard to advise people on. Janet's is a medium but the Small and Large fit her too because the shape is so forgiving. Janet says the neckline gets too wide for her in the larger sizes and slips off her shoulders and of course there is too much fabric everywhere but, somehow, it ‘fits’. The main fit issue is the length of the shoulder straps/ how high the neckline sits on those who are well endowed. This is an easy fix and Janet will discuss it in the briefing video (which we'll add to the website when it's filmed).

Janet's Artisan Apron: Skill Level Required

Janet feels her Artisan Apron project is suitable for all, but people must be comfortable with a sewing machine and have cut all their fabric pieces (fronts, linings and pockets, etc) out BEFORE the workshop!

Further details of Materials/Equipment required for this Online Interactive Workshop will be updated on here once we have them and shared with all those who sign up for Janet's course in advance of that upload.

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern, or other information, relevant to this workshop will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

The ticket price of £50.00 is based on ONE person attending this workshop.

Lucy Brennan - Saturday 10 October 2020 - 3.00pm to 7.00pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop - Crystal Pattern Mystery Quilt

Time for something completely different! In Lucy Brennan's latest class you will use the Crystal Mystery Pattern to create a Structured Improv quilt or patchwork top for a cushion. Made up of three types of blocks, the pattern is machine pieced to make a striking impact through the use of colour and tone. Create blocks with any combination of colours and let the mystery unfold as you sew them into a unique ‘crystal’ layout.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Every version is an original and no two are alike! Lucy will guide you through an exploration of colour gradients and help you design a stunning layout using the mystery blocks you create. Choose your own colours and freely play with compositions as Lucy offers tips to making a modern striking pattern. With precise piecing instructions, traditional methods are given a twist and the mystery element makes this class so much fun!

You can make this pattern to any size, the smaller version is made up of 2.5” blocks and the larger version is 6.5” blocks. You can use fat quarters or yardage. Lucy recommends choosing at least eight colours, in whatever colour gradient you chose in a mix of light, medium and dark shades. You can also use ombre fabrics for added effect. Solid colours or tone on tone prints work really well too.

Introduction by Trudi

Ever wondered why some people get it and some people don’t, or you’ve tried it and didn’t get on with it? I was making way too many quilt tops back in the day, and never had enough time to hand quilt them. So I taught myself to free motion quilt in order to finish my quilts faster. What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You will learn the basics of how to start free motion quilting. We will look at needles, threads, wadding/batting and your sewing machine before we even start. If you have all the right information and tools, you will have a better experience each time you quilt. We will cover some basic designs to get you going, and look at how to finish. The different ways to tackle a quilt and how to manage a large quilt in your domestic machine.

Online Interactive Workshop - Moon Phase Hand Appliqué

Introduction by Kerry

I just love hand sewn appliqué! It’s brilliant as a portable project and it’s also a great way to embrace, enjoy and appreciate slow sewing. I also love working with bold graphic shapes and the phases of the moon are such a strong image - mother nature is the best designer - that they were calling to me to become an appliqué design: I almost feel like this project designed itself! In my Moon Phase Hand Appliqué workshop all those arcs and curves are perfect for learning and practicing the art of turning curved and straight raw fabric edges inwards with a beautifully smooth finish. Your moon phase appliqué can be made into a banner-style wall hanging, mini quilt or cushion cover.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

You will learn a variety of hand sewn appliqué techniques in this workshop including: needle turn, stitching outer curves, inner curves, points and straight lines. This includes thread basting, glue basting and foil curves. We will be using a variety of techniques and the pace of this class will be gentle: hand stitching is a slow stitching activity! There are two moon phase layout; one for the Northern hemisphere (shown on the banner) and the other for the Southern hemisphere (as seen on the cushion/mini quilt).

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop uses hand sewing and you will need be able to sew a basic running and overcast/whip stitch. You do not need any previous hand sewing appliqué experience.

Fabric/Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Background - FQ dark navy. Either plain/painterly style quilting cotton or cotton lawn, or a multi-direction low contrast pattern can also work. Examples: Janet Clare fabrics, Moda Grunge fabrics, Carolyn Friedlander fabrics, batiks, hand dyed cottons, Makower Spraytime or Makower Linen effect fabrics.

  • Moons - F8 (9” x 11”) or similar size in cream/white, plain or low contrast pattern

  • Dark full Moon - 5” x 5” dark fabric slightly different to the background fabric

  • Additional Materials - to make your appliqué into a banner, cushion or mini quilt are included in the class PDF handout.

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Templates printed out onto card and cut out.

  • Light chalk pencil e.g (this is for temporary marking & needs to brush out of your fabric, test on a fabric scrap first)

  • Standard pencil for drawing on fabric, or Sewline fabric pencil- this has a ceramic lead and an eraser

  • Straw/Milliner’s Needle (choose a size you are comfortable with. Standard sizes includes 9, 10 or 11, eleven is the thinnest. Tulip Needles have an appliqué needle with a bigger eye in their range.

  • Standard needle for basting

  • Fine cotton or polyester thread in colours to match the light moon and dark moon fabrics. Examples: Aurfil 50 wt, Aurifil 80wt, Superior Threads Bottomline, SuperBOBs

  • Small fabric scissors

  • Standard thread for basting

  • Sandpaper board- easily made using double-sided tape to stick a piece of fine sandpaper onto an old note book cover or sturdy card. If you don’t have this, have an emery nail file to hand

  • Iron + ironing board/pressing surface

  • Point Turner/That Purple Thang/Chop stick/wooden cocktail stick- one of these! We’ll use this for turning points. You can also use the end of a small pair of scissors.

  • OPTIONAL - Appliqué pins (these are shorter than standard pins to stop the threads catching on them and are a good investment for hand appliqué). You can also use standard pins.

  • OPTIONAL - Basting glue, e.g. Roxanne Baste-It

Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Template patterns will be supplied for the moons and for the central embroidery motif. You will receive a PDF detailing some pre class preparation and another PDF with instructions on how to turn your appliqué piece into a wall hanging, mini quilt or cushion.

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

There is a small amount of preparation to do before class, all details will be emailed to you in a PDF about a week before the class date.

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern, or other information, relevant to this workshop will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

Online Interactive Workshop - Improv Stacks & Drunken Tiles

Introduction by Nicholas

Some years ago, longer now than I care to remember, I was so excited to have one of my quilts featured in an online e-zine. My FIRST publication! The quilt, titled Drunken Tiles, featured a technique I now call 'Stacks'. Fast-forward some seven years or so and I’m still using the same technique to make visually interesting and unique quilts. I’ve re-made the quilt many times since, even featuring it in my book Inspiring Improv, and each one has been truly unique. That’s the beauty of this technique; it’s versatile, meaning you can use it for all sorts of projects. It’s also super-speedy, perfect for that last-minute gift. It really is a great addition to your improv arsenal!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

In this workshop, you will learn to take simple squares and rectangles, layer them and slice into them. You’ll learn how to put a spin on traditional four and nine patch blocks, arming you with a technique that is fast and fun, whilst stretching those improv muscles. We will start by looking at the basics of the stacks technique, before moving on to more advanced units, adding contrast and secondary areas of interest with triangles scraps, perfect for using up those leftovers from my Trio of Triangles workshop! We will explore the idea of creating a colour gradient using the technique and experiment with the way the units are arranged to add as much or as little randomness as you like.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop is perfect for all skill levels. What I love most about this technique is its adaptability. From one simple technique, so many different quilts can be created. A beginner can start by making the simpler four patch units, adding more layers and cuts as they get more comfortable with the method.

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

None

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst difficult to give exact fabric amounts and measurements when sewing in an improvised way, please use the following as a rough guide. Decide if you’d like to make scrappy units, or experiment with solids to create a colour gradient. Or simply bring lots of squares and try both!

For a scrappy version:

  • 48 squares, approximately 6-8”, in various prints/solids of one colour way.

  • 16 squares, approximately 6-8”, in another colour way.

  • Odd scraps of contrasting colours.

  • Extra squares of any colour or print for experimentation and spontaneity.

  • For a colour gradient:

  • 64 squares, cut from 10-12 different shades of one colour. You’ll be looking to create an ombre effect, so solids would work best.

  • The squares don’t have to be perfectly square, as long as they are all of a similar size. A layer cake or charm pack would be perfect.

Please don’t stress about these requirements. They are simply a guide and I’ve yet to teach a class where something couldn’t be made because of the wrong fabric pieces. If in doubt, gather up a selection of prints and colours you like and you can cut during the workshop. Accuracy at the cutting stage is not so important using my techniques, so it won’t take long at all if you want to cut your pieces along with me. As mentioned, they don’t need to be perfectly square, so feel free to use scissors!

This is a technique-based workshop. We will be exploring the stack technique and won’t have a finished project in mind. Feel free to make as many or as few of the units as you like. You can combine them into a sampler or continue to work on the project after the workshop by adding more units to it. Don’t feel any pressure to cut up all your precious fabric!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A sewing machine

  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)

  • Rotary cutter with a new blade

  • Cutting mat

  • Patchwork ruler (we can make any size work, but a small 1” x 12” is very handy, as is a 12.5” square.

  • Fabric scissors

  • A willingness to explore your own creativity!

Tickets for this Online Interactive Workshop (via the Zoom platform) will be limited and allocated on a first-come/first-served basis! Any free pattern, or other information, relevant to this workshop will be forwarded to you after booking and approximately 5 days before the course date.

Gary Mills - Wednesday 21 October 2020 - 6.00pm to 9.00pm (BST)

Online Interactive Workshop - Nordic Reindeer Decorations

Create a little bit of ‘Scandi-style’ for your home this winter!

Introduction by Gary

I just love Scandinavian design and the culture of this far away land of pine forests, ancient folk tales, and sleigh rides in the snow; it is just a perfect setting to welcome in the autumn and winter as we prepare for Christmas. Imagine coming home to a simple yet minimal styled cabin lit by a burning open log fire and candles dancing shadows across the walls. Aaaahhh…. let's get cosy, settle in and get stitching these easy-to-make Nordic Reindeer decorations.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

This workshop takes you through selecting combinations of fabrics that work and give a simple yet sophisticated style. You can mix up natural woven fabrics, with prints and found recycled bits of embroidery. Keeping the combinations simple yet stylish. Consider oatmeal coloured linens mixed with Nordic printed cottons in red and white or mix in a section of vintage embroidery you have recycled from a rescued old tablecloth or similar. You will learn cutting out from the supplied pattern and then constructing through simple machine stitch with stage by stage instruction. Then turning through and stuffing your reindeer; finally adding the details to give him/her character through stitch and decoration.

Collected twigs and sticks to compliment and finish the reindeer keeps in synergy with the ethos of Scandinavian life; that of experiencing nature and bringing the natural environment into your home.

This finished reindeer is 12” (30cm) high

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

The skill level for this project would suit all, from the beginner who would like to learn with simple, clear, achievable instruction, to those who are more experienced who will quickly grasp the construction process and will probably not just make one reindeer, but probably a whole herd by the end of the session.

Fabric & Haberdashery requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

As mentioned above, select your fabric to create the ‘Scandinavian style’

Consider natural linens and cottons, washed calico in creams and oatmeal colours.  Printed cottons in red and white Nordic or even Christmas themed patterns can be used. Consider any found or treasured vintage embroidered and old lace fabrics which you would not mind cutting up and incorporating into your design. Such as old and worn table linen and interior fabrics. These make for great little interesting personal touches within the body of the reindeer.

For each reindeer you will need:

  • Total fabric for body, ears, and tail 24” x 16” (60cm x 40cm) (additional sections such as printed fabrics and vintage fabrics can measure 6” x 7” (15cm x 18cm)

  • Polyester toy stuffing 2.5 oz or 75g

  • Good quality neutral coloured sew-all machine thread

  • For eyes and nose embroidery thread in black and red

  • For legs 4x found and cut from the hedgerow straight sticks / twigs 6” (15cm) long by ¼” (5mm) in diameter

  • For antlers 2x exceptionally fine forked twigs up to 7” (18cm) total length and 2/8” (2mm) in dimeter

  • Optional: fine red ribbon ¼” (5mm) wide 10” (25cm) long  and small bell for tying around the neck as an additional decoration to the reindeer

Note: You will probably have time within the session to start or fully make a second reindeer so have additional fabrics and materials to use!

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A sewing machine (straight stitch used)

  • Fabric, paper, and embroidery scissors

  • Pins

  • Hand sewing needle

  • Tape measure

  • Useful: fabric marker pen

  • Useful: chop stick or similar blunt stick for aiding the stuffing

  • Sharp kitchen scissors or garden secateurs for trimming twigs and sticks

Online Interactive Workshop - Kitty Kat Raw-Edge Machine Appliqué

Introduction by Sarah:-

I love raw edged appliqué, stitched down with a scribbly free motion stitch! I love the fact that the stitching looks like  pencil line and used to add extra detail to your design. And what better design to play with than this gorgeous cat – a perfect gift for any cat lover!

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Raw edged machine appliqué is a method for creating fun designs quickly and then stitching them down with a free motion foot. You will learn how to prepare your appliqué pieces, iron them into place and then use your free motion foot to sew them down and add detail.
