Here is a super chance to be tutored and learn with textile artist and teacher Gary Mills,

 

A seascape of balmy summer days on the beach captured in textiles by experienced designer and tutor Gary Mills. Through this easy to follow Pattern and illustrated instructional booklet with embedded video link, you can create this amazing 'Seascape In A Box' in a simple box frame. This fun tutored project is for anyone wishing to explore, improve and learn their applique and embroidery skills. The outcome can easily be adapted towards your own future projects to personalise your own memories in nature and the countryside.

 

Once completed, learn how to mount and frame your work in a simple box frame. Gary has also added in some found beach shells and sea glass which loosely tumble within the frame for an added playful finish!  

 

Skills/Techniques covered in this workshop:-

Using masked off hand painted sections on canvas, applique strips of fabrics, free machine and hand embroidery to add details and then finished with bead embellishments.

This workshop would suit a beginner in free motion machine embroidery through to someone with experience.

 

Material requirements for this pattern (if applicable):-

Fabrics:

  • For the background 8” x 8” cream cotton canvas or heavy unbleached calico
  • For the machine embroidery 8” x 8” stitch and tear backing. (Note: If you are considering all hand stitches the backing is not necessary)
  • Fabric for the sea and surf 7” x 2 ½” fabric strips in 3 x shades of blue and 1 x white (suggest loose weave cottons, muslins, and light silk weights) 
  • For the dried grasses 3” x 3” of jute or natural hessian
  • For the mound / foreground 2” x 2” grey / brown tweed fabric or similar weight
  • For mounting the finished work 6” x 6” Domet or Bumph (thin wadding interlining)

 

Haberdashery:

  • Good quality machine thread in colours: Browns, ochre, greens, blue and white and black / dark grey
  • Embroidery thread or Perle in creams, straw & linen colours
  • Optional: selection of some small beads in white and clear

 

Other materials:

  • Acrylic paint: White & Blue for the sky. For the wet sand, white, burnt umber (brown) & Ochre (yellow) 
  • Masking tape
  • Pencil and fabric marker
  • Box frame to take finished picture 6” x 6”
  • Mount card or similar 6” x 6”
  • Glue stick or spray mount
  • Double sided sticky tape
  • Optional finishing decoration: a selection of small shells, sea glass, coral to add to the box frame before closing

 

Equipment required:

  • Sewing machine with free motion embroidery foot (note: this project can be achieved with all hand stitches if you prefer)
  • A general sewing box: scissors, needles, pins
  • Sponge applicators or similar
  • Cutting blade
  • Ruler or quilting square to help line up
  • Iron for pressing (you can also use a sheet of baking parchment to protect your work when pressing)

Optional hair dryer to speed drying process
