Learning Free-Motion Quilting can be such a challenge: knowing what to quilt beyond loops or a stipple, where to go or perhaps giving yourself permission to play. Having some tips and techniques to help would be a good starting point, no?! This class is aimed very much at the Beginner who has tried a little FMQ, or any quilter that wants to go beyond the straight line and add a bit more interest to their designs and technique. How about looking at your quilt in a different way and breaking down the quilting into a grid? Now there's a great idea! What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-
You will learn the basic designs worked over grids, including basket weave, the clamshell and orange peel designs, and how to take the basic design and add in more interest and take your quilting designs to another level.
Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
This class is for anyone who has a little experience with Free Motion Quilting. It is purely technique based and there is no expectation for you to make or finish a project during the class. Give yourself permission to play and have fun. No pressure at all!
Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
- Sewing Threads
- Pens/Pencils
- A4 Plain Paper
- Printed copies of the grid sheets (these will be sent as a PDF via email to all who purchase a ticket).
Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
- At least 4 x Fat-Quarter sized prepared fabric and wadding sandwiches
- You may wish to piece 16 patch blocks with 1½” or 2” Squares (cut)
- At least 4 Fat Quarter sized prepared fabric and wadding sandwiches
Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
This class uses your domestic sewing machine, set up for free-motion quilting. If you have a computerised machine, please check with your manual before you start to ensure you have it set up correctly.
- Sewing-Machine, with feed dogs lowered (an extension table for your machine can be useful)
- Free Motion or Darning Foot for your specific machine
- Basic sewing equipment, such as Hand-Sewing Needles, Snips/Small Scissors
- Quilting Gloves (only if you have them)
- Water Soluble Pen and Ruler for Fabrics Marking
Pattern Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-
A sheet of Grids is attached. The Grid will very much be the basis of the class. You may wish to have several copies printed. We will be looking at free hand designs using this grid.
Sizing Guide relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-
Examples will be worked over a 1” (inch) Grid.
Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-
You will need to prepare your fabric layers into a sandwich of backing, wadding and top (which should be plain fabric). Using a water soluble pen and quilting ruler, mark the top fabric with a 1” Grid.
Please note: This class is all about learning whilst HAVING FUN and exploring the 'what ifs' in a design. The most important thing to bring to the workshop is a bundle of positive energy and an eagerness to learn in a relaxed, fun environment!...
