Online Interactive Workshop: Quilt Edge Finishings

The hugely popular and supremely talented Nicholas Ball dons his CraftyMonkies superhero outfit once again, this time teaching you all about those all-important Quilt Edge Finishings that will help 'seal the deal' on your crafting masterpieces!...

Introduction by Nicholas:-

When I began quilting I would often hear others say that binding the raw edges of the quilt was their least favourite part of the process. I couldn’t disagree more, even after the countless quilts I’ve bound since then. I love binding and it often surprises people when I tell them that enthusiastically. For me, the finishing of the quilt’s edge is a culmination of all the hard work that has gone into making it. I love each step, from choosing the fabric to hand stitching it down. I enjoy deciding on an edge treatment that suits the style of quilt and love to share all the other alternatives to double fold binding.

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:--

In this workshop we’ll explore several different options you can use to finish the edges of your quilted projects. We’ll start by looking at some examples of my favourite types of finish before working through my preferred technique for simple binding step-by-step. I have perfected the way I make and attach my binding and you maybe surprised by some of the extra steps I take to ensure a great finish. I’ll be showing you how I cut my strips, press, machine stitch and hand finish. After looking at binding a curved and angular edge, we’ll move on to facings, for both a straight and wonky edge, before finishing the workshop with a pillow case method and a traditional Welsh butted technique.

Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

BEGINNER! A good, go-to binding technique is a must for every quilter, regardless of their skill or ability. This workshop will show you how easy it is to achieve a neat finish, whatever method you choose, even if you’ve never bound a quilt before!

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Whilst not essential for this workshop, Nicholas' book Inspiring Improv (published by Lucky Spool, 2019) will expand upon the straight binding learnt and provide six improv piecing techniques which you can use to make a new quilt to practice your new finishings skills on.

Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

As this is a technique-based class, rather than binding a finished quilt, you may prefer to make a small sample of each technique so that you can practice and have a reference to look back at. Of course, if you have a quilt that you just can’t wait to bind, please use that!

Seven prepared quilt sandwiches comprising of a fabric top, wadding and backing, approximately 12” - 15” square. Six of these can be quilted together if you wish, or they can be basted with either thread or spray adhesive. Avoid pins as they may get in the way when attaching the binding. If you do chose to quilt them, leave a border of approximately one inch un-quilted around the edge of one square.

Approximately 3/4 metre of fabric for the bindings and facings. This doesn't have to be the best from your stash, though it should be WOF so I can show you how to cut strips. A simple solid will work and you can use the same for all the techniques requiring additional fabric.

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Sewing-Machine
  • Good quality thread in an appropriate weight for piecing (I recommend Aurifil 50wt)
  • Rotary Cutter - with a new blade!
  • Cutting Mat
  • Patchwork Ruler (we can make any size work, but a 6” x 24” and a smaller 1” x 12” are handy sizes for this classes)
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Fabric Marker or Pencil that shows up on your chosen binding fabric.
  • Hand-Sewing Needle (I use a long milliners needle with a small eye)
  • Point Turner or Chopstick.
  • A Walking Foot - not essential, but very useful!
