Online Interactive Workshop: Penguin Applique Picture

The lovely Janet Clare returns once again to deliver another wondrously cute creation - her Penguin Appliqué Picture (perfect and in plenty of time for you to get started with a Christmas-themed creation don't you think?!)

Janet says she just looooooves Winter! Crisp frosty mornings and clear star-filled nights. Cosy woolly jumpers, hot chocolate by open fires and long evenings just made for sewing, help to make this her favourite season of all. With this Penguin Appliqué Picture Worskhop, you can create and arrange your own cheerful 'penguin-huddle' on a quick and simple appliqué picture!

We’ll start by learning how to draw with our Sewing-Machines; if you’ve done it before then more practice is always a good idea! After that we’ll learn or practice how to do Fusible Appliqué before piecing a simple landscape for our penguins to live in.

We’ll then appliqué and stitch our huddles, add hand-quilting details and discuss picture finishing techniques.

Preparation for this online interactive workshop is as follows:-

  • 1) As well as having a basic sewing kit to hand, set up your sewing-machine for free-motion stitching. Check your instruction booklet but for most machines you will need to lower the feed dogs and add a darning foot. Your machine will be happier free-motion stitching if it has a new needle. Did you know you are supposed to replace the needle after every five hours of sewing? Load with a dark thread, preferably polyester as it is stronger and more forgiving when doing free-motion. Janet typically uses grey Gutermann polyester sew-all thread, colour code 702.
  • 2) Have an iron nearby, you will need this during the workshop!
  • 3) Gather your fabrics and supplies – see 'Material requirements' section below – and print the Templates (Templates will be supplied via email shortly after people have booked their place).

Material requirements for this online interactive workshop are as follows:-

Plain fabric and wadding (about A4 size) plus fabric scraps to practice fusible appliqué and free-motion stitching

For the picture background, two different pieces of 10 ½” x 3”fabric – Janet chose a striped and patterned pale grey.

For the penguins: 5”x 3” piece of cream/white fabric for the tummies and 9”x 3”piece of black fabric for the bodies 10”x 5”piece of wadding

36”x 2 ½”piece of co-ordinating fabric for binding

Fusible web for appliqué

Neutral and black sewing thread

White quilting thread

A4 mount board, glue lines and frame (optional - this is how Janet mounted it!)
