Online Interactive Workshop - Daydream Gradation!
Join with us and first-time CraftyMonkies tutor Tammy Silvers, to create a Daydream quilt block using a Fabric Gradation technique, along with simple shapes, - a fun project that has movement and unexpected negative space that adds interest to a traditional block!...
Introduction by Tammy:-
Hi, I'm Tammy. I've been teaching quilting since the year 2000 and I design under the label Tamarinis. I enjoy working with almost any fabric, but my favorites (the one that will make me drool, and blow my budget) are batiks, bold prints, and almost any fabric with words on it. I even design fabrics for Island Batik. A perfect fit - since I LOVE batiks!
Yes, I love designing, but I really love teaching and sharing my passion for quilting. It is so much fun to visit different guilds, meet quilters and see all the creativity that makes this such a fun world to be a part of. I love it how I often pick up things from you guys in class too! I’m so excited for this Daydream in Gradations class! Creating a gradation is one of my very favorite techniques to apply to piecing. I think you are going to love it as well. There is nothing like it to create movement and interest in your project. When I did a similar set of films for the CraftyMonkies VIP club the members loved it and wanted more, so here we are! A class available to all. I hope you'll join me!
What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-
Create flow and movement in your quilt by creating a gradation of color using individual fabrics and clever piecing. Let me guide you on how to arrange your fabrics to give an ombre or gradation effect that will liven up your quilt and direct the eye across the surface. What you leave out is as important as what you put in! We will discuss negative space and impact. Simple straightforward units allow you to focus on fabrics and how their placement affects the flow of the blocks. Making Daydream will give you the skills to apply this gradation technique to more of your projects, making them sing with movement.
Skill Level for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
This class is perfect for the confident beginner! We are working with just a few basic quilting shapes and units. We will make those units really shine by using the fun gradation technique.
Fabric requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-
Tammy's Daydream Pattern is included in the cost of your class. We will send the pattern to you a few days after you have booked your class. The fabric amounts will be listed and to get the MOST out of your class, Tammy recommends cutting Fabric A, as per the pattern. Colours from pattern are used – feel free to choose your own. Backing Not Listed Cut Fabric A per Page 1 of the pattern
Bring an assortment of fabrics (I recommend 8 to 10) for Fabrics B through F. We will spend some time at the beginning of class discussing gradations and how they work. You’ll narrow down your 8 to 10 fabrics to five that give a gradation effect that is pleasing to you. When selecting your 8 to 10 fabrics, think dark to light (or light to dark). Look for prints that have some colours in common. Use the project image as a guide – but make this your own. Like stripes? Great! Or florals? Use them! Can you bring more than 10 fabrics? Of course! Note that the yardage needed per fabric varies from 7/8 yard to 3⁄8 yard, so I would recommend 7/8 yard or more of each to allow you to move fabrics around.

Some General Notes relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-
I am going to put together a little one/two page handout on creating a gradation from fabrics that will be sent out to students along with the supply list and pattern. The project uses basic shapes (HST, Square, Rectangle). Tammy will review cutting/piecing/trimming HST units in class as necessary. Feel free to make this your own – you can go scrappy, or make fewer blocks for a smaller project! WARNING: This technique may become addictive!
BEFORE this Online Interactive Workshop:-
Please cut Fabric A (your background fabric) as per the Pattern (see above for pattern details). Label your cuts by size for quick piecing.
