Online Interactive Workshop: Draw Like Fabric Moves!

We're really excited to be hosting this Draw Like Fabric Moves workshop with a wonderful & hugely talented NEW CraftyMonkies guest tutor, Tim Foss! Tim's class will see participants learn how graphite sticks can teach us how to leverage our 'accidents', teach you basic tricks to undersatnd composition and help you gain confidence in your mark-making - this promises to be another hugely popular class: we really hope you're able to join us!…

Introduction to Tim:-

Timothy Foss’ award winning arts career spans 30 years making functional pottery, drawings, paintings, graphic novels, theater, dance, music, and illustration for clients from General Mills to US State Representative, Ilhan Omar. His most recent work is inspired by Buddhism, movement, and a desire to use art to connect us:-

“I love to imagine that we discovered how to draw when our ancestors’ feet made marks in the dirt as they danced. Even as beliefs might distance us in a highly virtual world, drawing at a large scale with our whole body can remind us we are related to each other through the fabric of our bones, materials, and movements.”

What You Will Learn in this Online Interactive Workshop:-

Technical:

  • How graphite sticks teach us to leverage our accidents.
  • Basic tricks to understand composition.
  • Celebrate and gain confidence in your mark-making.

Personal:

  • To treat drawing as a non-competitive process not a product
  • To record your movementsin a drawing
  • Techniques to stay aware of your body in art and life

This Online Interactive Workshop is aimed at:-

  • Artists looking to reconnect to their practice if they're 'blocked' or dissatisfied with their career
  • Artists trying to unlock their individual style and identity in their work
  • Artists trying to energise their beginners mind to overcome frustrations in learning

Material requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

We will work large on a horizontal surface if possible. I recommend these materials specifically because of how they interact together, but feel free to include other drawings sticks (or colored chalk pastels) or other papers you might have lying around. Keep it simple!

  • NEWSPRINT PAD. As large as you can get; Tim suggests something along the lines of 61 x 91cms (24 x 36 inches) - High-quality option: a pad of medium YUPO paper
  • GRAPHITE STICK. (Not a pencil! Not charcoal!) Tim prefers the 9B GRAFCUBE by Caran D’ache: 15mm
  • Or, if you can’t find this brand, make sure yours is at least a 6B about 25mm thick and square.
  • MASKING TAPE to secure your paper (something easy to remove - artist tape or painters tape)
  • One or two sheets of Medium Grain Sandpaper
  • 4 x STRONG BINDER CLIPS - and a wall you can nail into (for people working vertically!)

Optional:-

  • KNEADED ERASER
  • FIX-IT SPRAY

Equipment requirements for this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • Table - large enough to fit your pad. Should be stable so it won’t wobble when you’re working
  • Floor - if you’re flexible and feel loose enough to move easily while squatting or on your knees
  • Wall - pad could be mounted with binder clips

Additional Information relevant to this Online Interactive Workshop:-

  • A yoga class is about how you respond to challenges, not appearances. This is the same!
  • We are connecting across the world not competing
  • Observe how CraftyMonkies minds behave when we draw and reflect on our results!
  • We are holding space for each other to risk something
  • These are recordings of a moment in time. They are honest. So success is defined as everything...
